What actually are your plans to deal with disablism on MN?

JustAnothersilentorangenugget · 08/07/2017 16:20

You remember you were going to impliment all kinds of things, Message which explained posts were deleted due to disablism, Emails to the posters, proactive buzzwords...

a year on what has been the result of this massive change in moderation?

Now i'm not suggesting this was a carrot, dangled to try and stop people leaving....
But we donkeys ARE getting a little tired of walking and woudl like to know what plans are there for the future to stop attacks.

Absolutely, prof.
Otherwise it's 🙄 ohhh sn brigade whining AGAIN.

Dawndonnaagain · 14/07/2017 12:45

Quickest way to get rid, is generally to completely ignore in public and carry on reporting behind the scenes.
This has been tried for years. Remember when the SN boards got hidden a few years back? Was for this reason, but still they seek them out. It's not for attention, it's just to be plain nasty. If it were for attention they'd be targeting the main boards.

WorraLiberty · 14/07/2017 13:25

There is absolutely no way you'll stop a troll from trolling by acknowledging them, so there is absolutely no point in engaging.

As has been said, it's far too easy for banned posters to keep coming back, but that's a separate matter and not one that will get sorted either by giving trolls the attention they want.

JustadaftProfessor · 14/07/2017 13:26

Ignoring them hasn't worked.

WorraLiberty · 14/07/2017 13:31

Then you need to keep bringing it up with HQ.

No troll in the world is going to think, "Oh shit, they're taking notice of me and talking about me now. Time to stop trolling".

I know it's difficult to ignore, but most of you have been here long enough to know trying to engage with them doesn't work and HQ will tell you the same.

JustadaftProfessor · 14/07/2017 13:31

If we get abuse either way isn't it better other people realise what is happening?

JustadaftProfessor · 14/07/2017 13:33

We have also sent written formal complaints to HQ too.

BishopBrennansArse · 14/07/2017 13:34

Ignoring doesn't work. Engaging doesn't work.
MNHQ don't really do much.

So they just go on and on and on.... they have broken the law. If my local police were more proactive I'd go through them.

JustadaftProfessor · 14/07/2017 13:35

We've tried discussions with HQ through other means to work out what to do, they blank us.

This has been the only way we get a response.

JustadaftProfessor · 14/07/2017 13:41

I'm betting most people had no idea this was going on. I'm betting HQ put it on the back burner BECAUSE it was kept quiet.

BishopBrennansArse · 14/07/2017 13:41

Not only blank us but tell us if it's not for us then we should leave.
On the whole it is for us, though. Except for a minority of ignorant people and a few posters acting illegally.

I'm not seeing why I should lose a source of outside contact and support that I lack in RL because of a minority of people who should be properly managed.

WorraLiberty · 14/07/2017 13:41

OK well imo you're just encouraging them because they love the drama, but it's up to you if you choose that path I guess.

Anyway, I hope HQ do something about how easy it is to keep re-registering.

Over 10 years ago internet forums had systems in place to prevent that. Those systems even told the moderators what devices the trolls were trying to re-register from and they'd get auto banned.

God knows why HQ seem to be living in the dark ages with these things.

JustadaftProfessor · 14/07/2017 13:43

We've been ignoring them for over a year, it doens't work.

WorraLiberty · 14/07/2017 13:45

Nor. Will. Giving. Them. Attention. Grin Grin

It doesn't stop

Twitter trolls

Facebook trolls

Instagram trolls

So there's no way it's going to stop Mumsnet trolls.

Anyway, I'm not going round in circles here. Hope HQ get a handle on it soon Thanks

Sirzy · 14/07/2017 13:46

Worra does have a valid point. Feeding them is exactly what they want.

JustadaftProfessor · 14/07/2017 13:48

Nor. Will. Giving. Them. Attention.

No but it does show the other members of mumsnet the problem.

Think about it, this thread has highlighted:

  1. The PMing disabled hate speech troll(s)
  2. The ease of reregistering
  3. the extent of the disablism
JustadaftProfessor · 14/07/2017 13:49

Maybe it will give HQ a push to sort something out.

WorraLiberty · 14/07/2017 13:51

Do you honestly think other members of Mumsnet don't know there are trolls on the internet?

Lots of topics get trolled by nasty, sick individuals. It's all over MN including the bereavement topic and as for FWR, I don't think there's ever been a time when it wasn't crammed full of trolls.

The only people would can go half way to preventing it, work at MNHQ.

WorraLiberty · 14/07/2017 13:52

*who

Samcro · 14/07/2017 14:08

this thread isnt about trolls, it about disablism on mn and how its dealt with.

JustadaftProfessor · 14/07/2017 14:11

The only people would can go half way to preventing it, work at MNHQ.

And how do you expect we discuss how to deal with disablism if not with the people who are in your own words " the only ones can go half way to preventing it"

Threads on site stuff as. so far, the only way HQ respond to us, as i have said other means of cummunication, including formal letters are blanked.

Disillusionedone · 14/07/2017 14:26

I think the place to start would be first of all reaching some kind of entente with HQ.

In their view people (including myself in past for which i have/do apologise) were harsh to them on their own free site. Which isn't really ideal.

I dont believe people were just harsh for no reason, they felt let down by some of the hurtful things left to stand which really really hit you to the quick when it's about your child, especially when you are struggling with the issues in question IRL.

So tempers can run high. It is i imagine a tricky issue to moderate. I do think there are things which could be improved of course.

I think however at moment we are in a mexican standoff where people are aggrieved but HQ feel a bit "fuck you".

I think that would need to be resolved before any progress can be made.

personally i do think HQ have made a big effort in past to support us and maybe don't feel so inclined now.

Would be nice if some better feeling on both sides could be achieved.

Just my take on things.

Polter · 14/07/2017 14:27

I agree that we should avoid engaging with the trolls and I think, in the main, as soon as they are spotted (and they're not always as blatant, often they aren't obviously trolling until you've engaged then they ratchet up the crap), they get reported and, in an ideal world, quickly deleted and everyone moves on. Unfortunately, when deletion takes ages, as has happened recently, the trolls attract their own band of followers and it all escalates, they get bolder and more extreme. And it is really hard to ignore someone who is attacking you or people like you.

The issue has to be talked about because it needs addressing, I don't understand why it's such a big problem on MN when other sites seem to manage, it's not ok to just accept it and ignore it.

Dawndonnaagain · 14/07/2017 14:29

Worra, which bit of we have tried are you not getting?
We know you've been here for years, but so have we. I deal with enough without having to deal with shit in what was my only safe space.

JustadaftProfessor · 14/07/2017 14:41

It's made me very apprehensive about giving advice to people, which i assume is the goal.
