Rules around banning?

TheUnworthy · 13/11/2016 21:54

Feeling a little nervous after the recent thread that went 'poof' and reports of people being banned and not knowing why/not having any deleted posts beforehand.

Is there a three strike rule? No strikes?

OP posts:
Saucery · 19/11/2016 14:54

It comes from the same root, JustAnother.

TeacherBob · 19/11/2016 14:54

Back on topic and in reference to the above post, maybe it isn't the 'trolling' that is the problem, but more that on this site as soon as you have and share a differing opinion, people scream 'troll'

Because I have NEVER trolled on this forum. But it does get thrown at me a lot. Just because I share a different opinion and try and explain that opinion

PinkissimoAndPearls · 19/11/2016 14:58

You have offensive opinions Bob and I for one sincerely hope you're not actually a teacher as I would not want you anywhere my DDs. Or DSs, to be fair, although I know you're not a fan of equality between the sexes.

How come you're back if you've been banned?

TeacherBob · 19/11/2016 15:02

See there we go.

My opinions aren't offensive, they are different.

But you feel confident enough to hammer my job. You look past the fact I am in outstanding, inspirational teacher (not my words) even though you don't really know me.

And you don't back up anything, other than just give abuse

JustAnotherSadOldNumber · 19/11/2016 15:03

My opinions aren't offensive

If they offend people then they are offensive.

TeacherBob · 19/11/2016 15:04

I wasn't banned for the thread Noble talked about.

I was banned for posting on the FWR thread that I was leaving and won't be back on the forum because I had learned my lesson.

They said I was 'goading'.

So now I just stay off that part of the forum. It doesn't stop certain posters from following me around the other parts of the forum and having digs. So all I can do now is report post and try and ignore them

ErrolTheDragon · 19/11/2016 15:06

No one should accuse someone of being a troll, that's against talk guidelines too. The correct procedure is to report. Unfortunately I guess some posters are hesitant to bother MNHQ, and also if late night(which many iffy posts tend to occur on), response is inevitably slow, so it happens.

TeacherBob · 19/11/2016 15:07

If they offend people then they are offensive.

They don't really offend most people.
EVERY single thread I have posted in have had people agree with me.

I have strong opinions, that is very true. But those opinions always have people agree (and usually disagree). Even on the FWR that is talked about, some people agreed with me and just about everyone who posted on the thread said I didn't deserve to be banned.

TeacherBob · 19/11/2016 15:12

on the follow up thread*

And you know what, that thread has had a big effect on my life. Well as much in that I have had discussions on it with a great many people in my work and personal life. The answers from people have been very telling.
I apoligised on the thread for the tit comment, but I stand by everything else I said, all of which was trying to make a point.
My view is, if you are as secure in what you say as you say you are, why would you be so offended and keen to shut up someone who is sharing a different point of view.

Yes, I have very strong opinions. And yes, I am aware that will annoy some people. But I don't think I should be shut down for sharing them.

I always liken myself to marmite, you will either love or hate me. There is a standing joke at work that I am 'principled'
I do have an issue in that I am like a dog with a bone when I think I am right. It is something I am working on. But that is what keeps me coming back to a thread, not because I am trolling.

I find the accusation offensive tbh

GingerIvy · 19/11/2016 15:13

I don't think that having some people agree with you means that the post is not offensive. We've had quite a few posts that were blatantly offensive that people agreed with. It just means that more than just the person that posts the message holds the same offensive view.

JustAnotherSadOldNumber · 19/11/2016 15:13

EVERY single thread I have posted in have had people agree with me.

Just because people agree doesn't mean you are not being offensive.

BertrandRussell · 19/11/2016 15:14

If ever I need an example of disingenuousness I'll know exactly where to go...............

BertrandRussell · 19/11/2016 15:15

And of psychological manspreading...........

JustAnotherSadOldNumber · 19/11/2016 15:17

What's manspreading?

Saucery · 19/11/2016 15:19

That thing some men do on public transport, hutAnother. Spreading their legs to take up as much space as possible.

TeacherBob · 19/11/2016 15:21

No, they spread because it is uncomfortable to sit with your legs closed. Because on a bus you can't put your hands down your pants to re-arrange things :p

JustAnotherSadOldNumber · 19/11/2016 15:21

ah, thanks.

TeacherBob · 19/11/2016 15:21

And on that note, I am off from posting on this thread until it gets back on topic

ErrolTheDragon · 19/11/2016 15:25

I do have an issue in that I am like a dog with a bone when I think I am right. It is something I am working on.

Yup, that sounds about right. To other posters, it can translate as being goady and 'merailing' which is a PITA when they want to move a discussion on. Make your point, some people agree, some disagree - then don't keep going on and on about it. Like you're doing here now.

TeacherBob · 19/11/2016 15:27

I don't see it as going on and on, I see it as responding. See you posted and I felt a need to respond. It is the autism in me!

See I did it again, I'm off!!!!

Saucery · 19/11/2016 15:27

It can also appear that way to MNHQ when it is reported.

JustAnotherSadOldNumber · 19/11/2016 15:28

Really?

Saucery · 19/11/2016 15:32

What, repeating your point over and over? Yes it can appear goady and grounds for deletion. Fine balance between getting your point across and appearing to harangue and derail.

ilovesooty · 19/11/2016 15:37

the autism in me Seriously?

TeacherBob · 19/11/2016 15:43

What, repeating your point over and over? Yes it can appear goady and grounds for deletion. Fine balance between getting your point across and appearing to harangue and derail.

Yeah I totally get that.

But that FWR aside (which I think should be reinstated tbh), it isn't like I am blindly restating the same thing over and over. I am actually just responding to different points, which is what a discussion should be.
If people just make one point and then move onto the next thread, that isn't a discussion but just a place for people to make one point.

Or am I expecting too much from mumsnet? (I genuinely enjoy debate and run debate clubs at school with P4C being my absolute favourite lesson to 'teach' by a mile)
