Browsing mumsnet using the chrome browser on an android phone.

Opened a thread "www.mumsnet.com/Talk/_chat/2729635-Im-being-watched-WATCHED" on an "open in new tab" but the new tab opened with a spam advert page of the kind that tries to make you not navigate away. I presume this is an unintended hijack of some kind.

I copied the content of the navigation field in case it is of use to you but it seems to be gibberish.

This seems to happen quite regularly - what kind of info will help you to stop it?

I have just had it again when I clicked on a link to a site called Gossipcop? I clicked off it straight away but thought I'd mention it in case it helps narrow down advertisers in common.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 25/09/2016 11:30

There is nothing wrong with your phone, and no security issues (as long as you don't follow any dodgy links)

The issue is with dodgy adverts that use some sort of script to redirect you. Because the adverts are targeted so that not everyone sees them it is very hard for MN to stop them although every other site on the internet seems to manage

2016betterbebetter · 25/09/2016 11:38

Had this for months now on and off. Advert telling me I have won a phone. I have anti virus software, doesn't stop it. At least the explicit adverts for adult sites have stopped although it is still very annoying.

fluorine19 · 25/09/2016 12:05

"Malvertising", as it's known is actually a growing trend. Although many are more annoying than dangerous, increasingly, they are being used to infect users' machines in "drive by download" style attacks.
Responsible site owners will attempt to sanitise all advertisements, from whatever source, before presenting them on websites.
However, that process may fail, so keeping your computer updated with the latest security patches, etc., is extremely important.
(The Internet is like the wild west at present, and law enforcement is simply overwhelmed by the sheer scale of cyber attacks. Best to defend yourself as far as possible...)

swampytiggaa · 25/09/2016 12:17

Getting them again - always from sky broadband

BurnTheBlackSuit · 25/09/2016 12:25

Are they targeted? Or is everyone who has looked at MN with an android mobile this morning had them?

I can't help feeling that if this was an iPhone issue, MN would be doing more to sort it. After all, there has been an iPhone MN app for ages now, but the Android one was taken down and never replaced and it's been well over a year now...

AntiHop · 25/09/2016 12:33

This has happened to me on a different website. I can't remember what the website was sorry. It was months ago.

Oh fgs Mumsnet.

Using an Android device is almost impossible at weekends. Everytime today I've opened up a page here it has been hijacked within seconds. I didn't even need to log in. I'm posting this using my work Windows phone (which I shouldn't be using for personal stuff) and after that will be giving up.

Android, despite what Apple's pr machines might lead you to believe, is by miles the market leading platform (80% or so) The people who write malware target the Android platform just because of sheer numbers.

I do everything online with Android devices- no other website has the problems MN has.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 25/09/2016 12:57

swampy they are not from sky broadband.

They purport to be from whomever is your broadband or mobile data provider, hence I get BT when using WiFi or 3 when using mobile data. If you follow any of the questions they will almost certainly lead to a phishing or other scam site.

ladyballs · 25/09/2016 13:09

I'm still getting these on chrome

ThatIsNachoCheese · 25/09/2016 13:13

Still getting them daily.

SecretSpy · 25/09/2016 13:20

And again. While it was loading Threads I'm on. Still Android, Chrome. Still getting quite pissed off tbh

Still getting them here too. Always the first time I use MN on my phone (Android) at the weekend but never a problem on the iPad. I've basically given up using MN on my phone now.

Redglitter · 25/09/2016 14:21

I'm ready to give up. I've lost count of how many of these adverts I've had this weekend. I don't get them on any other site

Still getting them. I'm a bit worried as I had one when using facebook on Chrome. I use very few sites on Chrome: Mumsnet, facebook and bbc news, and Mumsnet was the first place I got the adverts. I'm a bit worried about what might be on my phone now.

jobrum · 25/09/2016 15:46

But I did go straight from mn to facebook so the ad redirection might still have come from mn and just opened on the next page.

Brontebiscuits · 25/09/2016 16:28

I'm assuming an adblocker will stop this so I'm now using one. You can find loads free on Play store for android.

fluorine19 · 25/09/2016 16:32

I hope the following is of some help:
amazonaws.com has been associated with malware distribution for some while, and infections seem common with Chrome users; not sure if they are exploiting a vulnerability in Chrome or that's just a coincidence, given the latter's popularity.

For removal, have a look at:
thedroidguy.com/2016/06/fix-samsung-galaxy-s7-keeps-getting-virus-infection-warnings-1060928

(Not having an Android phone, I can't vouch for any of these methods.)

Runningupthathill82 · 25/09/2016 16:46

This is driving me mad. Just happened again and it is ONLY Mumsnet that it happens on. Argh!

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 25/09/2016 16:54

Do you all have pop ups disallowed in chrome?
