What is Mumsnets definition of transphobia?

That's it really.

Mine would be hate or violence against trans people. Mine would not be "misgendering" or acknowledging transwomen are male and that they are not women.

OP posts:

Or is it rapists taking advantage of a situation in order to rape?

Pressed "send" too soon.

So if that means pointing out that not all trains women actually look like women, so would be intimidating to vulnerable women regardless of the actual threat they present then I will point that out. And I do not believe I am being transphobic if I do.

BertrandRussell · 08/07/2016 20:56

"Or is it rapists taking advantage of a situation in order to rape?"

Of course it is. Whether or not the person is actually towns or pretending to be. But if any questioning of a person's self identification is forbidden, how do you suggest we deal with that situation

Thefitfatty · 08/07/2016 20:56

I really could care less what someone calls me, my priority is to stand up for vulnerable people. And like it or not, trans people (men and women) have some of the highest rates of domestic violence, rape and assault against them in addition to the highest suicide rates.
Cis, like straight, gay, bi, black, white, yellow, blond, etc is a label for a thing that is increasingly hard to label. Because people don't fit in boxes. And it's going to get even harder to box as time goes on. But for the love of Pete, stop acting like trans women are public enemy number 1. They are just people trying to figure out where they belong like the vast majority of us. They aren't trying to steal your vaginas.

As a raped woman I'd rather hang out with a room full of trans women than a room full of female convicts any day

Thefitfatty · 08/07/2016 20:58

What's stopping a guy dressed as a guy entering these "female spaces". Nothing.

We need to stop pretending sexual identification and gender matter and actually address the real issues. Rape culture is not about men's and women's bathrooms or men's and women's prisons

Dachshund · 08/07/2016 21:00

Genuine question... seriously why do any of you give a flying fuck about being called 'cis'. It's just a descriptor. It makes precisely zero difference to my privledged life to acknowledge I was born in the body with the sex that I also identify with.

There's so much rubbing of hands in despair over men invading our spaces but I'd like to hear all your personal accounts of this happening. I'm sure you all actually deal with trans people day to day unawares - there's more than you think.

It's like saying 'why do I need to be called "white" I'm a human' Sad when black people are being gunned down by police.

I just don't understand the vitriol and handwringing about trans people on here. They're just trying to live their lives and find some happiness.

EightNoineTen · 08/07/2016 21:02

I think transphobia is when someone physically or verbally attacks a trans person for being trans. But the truth is I think the type of idiots likely to carry out violent attacks are more likely to be doing so for homophobic reasons.

BeyondVulvaResistance · 08/07/2016 21:02

Dachshund, there's a whole other thread about cis, if you really want to know why people don't like it

Thefitfatty · 08/07/2016 21:02

There is no such thing as female only spaces. There are no rooms in the world that will only open in the prscence of a vagina. Get that whole idea out of your head and you will realize both how vulnerable you are, and how silly this conversation is.

BeyondVulvaResistance · 08/07/2016 21:03

Fit. What does that have to do with clarifying what is transphobic posting on mn?

Thefitfatty · 08/07/2016 21:05

I already said what I thought transphobic is, anyone questioning or doubting a persons belief in who they are, the rest has been answering transphobic rhetoric that is so fucking rife on an otherwise open minded site.

EightNoineTen · 08/07/2016 21:06

Daschund 'cis' means you identify with a socially constructed gender role. I am a woman. I do not identify with being submissive or frivolous or a gossip or shoes or any of the other stereotypes about women. I am not cis and I believe no person is.

BertrandRussell · 08/07/2016 21:07

"But for the love of Pete, stop acting like trans women are public enemy number 1."

Nobody is. But we're talking about transwomen, so they are bound to be th focus.

Sorry bertrandrussel this must be the umpteenth millionth thread on trans women I've seen on mumsnet. Seriously, actual rapists and threats to society don't get this much attention!

BertrandRussell · 08/07/2016 21:10

"I already said what I thought transphobic is, anyone questioning or doubting a persons belief in who they are"

So you cannot envisage any circumstances where questioning a person's belief in who they we might be necessary?

ladyballs · 08/07/2016 21:10

I don't doubt that some trans women believe they are women, fit. It's not transphobic if I don't agree with them

SuburbanRhonda · 08/07/2016 21:11

anyone questioning or doubting a persons belief in who they are

How about anyone not being willing to say that trans women are exactly the same as women? Are they transphobic too?

Thefitfatty · 08/07/2016 21:12

Paraolympians compete in the olympics and there is no such thing as the "female Olympics" but sure, all you transphobic people, please go back to defing transphobia for mumsnet. I'll just sit back and read from now on

BertrandRussell · 08/07/2016 21:13

Do you think transwomen should compete against non transwomen in the Olympics?

BertrandRussell · 08/07/2016 21:14

Thefitfatty, could you please highlight a piece of transphobic rhetoric?
