MNHQ - are they disabilist?

Sixweekstowait · 09/06/2016 20:36

Having had a thread deleted with no communication with me until I asked ( but then I'm disabled and so invisible) , having read on the second class citizen thread of examples of disabilist language which HQ defend, I am beginning to think they are. I now think they were really really wrong to delete my thread and that they have NO IDEA about the everyday discrimination that people with disabilities face in even trying to travel to work, care even less and I would like to know how many of their staff are disabled?

Someone's spooling for an argument.
But they know someone disabled, so it's ok. They know better than we do.

Mater Flowers

I like that idea

My personal opinions regarding the deletion of the thread in question was that it did seem somewhat uneven-handed.

However, to back that feeling/assertion up, really needs an example of a thread which has been allowed to stand, despite the OP being lambasted for a word which may have offended someone. Alternatively, is there a thread where MNHQ have edited/removed the offensive word.

FWIW, when I mentioned the thread in question to MrsLH, she was as unaware of the "ablist" offensive word as I was Hmm.

I would be curious if anyone at MNHQ identified as disabled ? Bearing in mind MNHQ have admitted that MN is not accessible by any standard.

This has been answered, the answer was yes.

LurkingHusband · 10/06/2016 16:10

I saw nanoseconds after posting.

My point about accessibility stands Sad

MiffleTheIntrovert · 10/06/2016 20:46

I've actually had a pretty good email from MHHQ in response to my 10.09 post on this thread. It doesn't address bourdic's thread being deleted but I didn't raise it tbf, mine was more of a general rant Grin

I have replied to say thanks and they may want to post it on this thread as I don't know who else got the email?

It was nice to be listened to, just a shame there are so many either ignorant or goady posters around at the moment!

civilfawlty · 11/06/2016 00:20

Wow. Too much to hope others would get the same.

AugustaFinkNottle · 11/06/2016 07:12

I was on the original thread and called people out on their blatantly false offence at "walkie talkie".

I think the difficulty may be that you are taking the deletion of the thread as MN telling you off, when that isn't necessarily the case. They've been known to delete threads before that started off reasonably innocuously but that turn into a bunfight. People on AIBU in particular have this horrible tendency to pick on one tiny word or phrase in an OP and go on and on about that so that it goes right away from the point and becomes positively harmful to everyone including the OP.

goodness me, Tanni Grey Thompson has just replied to one of my tweets - we are bemoaning the state of Passenger Assistance. Last week, and not for the first time, she had to crawl off a train because they failed to meet her. After bb, it's my next - wonder if we could get MN to invite her on for a chat- she has a daughter of about 13.- shall I ask them? It would be an opportunity to prove they are serious about addressing their ahem shortcomings in their grasp of disability issues

Bourdic what a brilliant idea.

BoreOfWhabylon · 11/06/2016 18:20

Great idea Bourdic!

Although I have to say, in my experience, Great Western Passenger Assistance is excellent - others, not so much.

Sixweekstowait · 11/06/2016 18:37

Bore - that's good - I have tried and failed with Network Rail who provide the service at Waterloo but I travel from a Southern Rail Station on a South West Train....,,,need I say more? But I digress- will ask HQ re TGT

I was stranded at a trainstation when passenger assist didnt come to get me a kind woman helped me off i was raging

BishopBrennansArse · 11/06/2016 20:16

Southern Rail forced me to drag myself off and on a train late at night once despite having booked passenger assistance. DH lifted my extremely heavy chair risking injury. Twice. But we couldn't leave it on the platform or train and had to get home!

Well zzzz I'm really pleased you've had such a good experience with MN. That does not invalidate my experience or that of others on MN who have not. Are you referring to issues around disability btw. Why did you strike through the point about asking about their staff? It was a perfectly reasonable question for me to ask because in my extensive experience organisations only have meaningful policies around disability when they involve people with disabilities in drawing up those policies and a starting point for the is having some staff with disabilities .

Yes, we each experience MN differently.
I think the SN section is fantastic and yet it it remains very far from perfect. One persons ballsy is another persons obnoxious.
We all experience the site and it's boards differently.
I think MNHQ do the best they can and that includes an admirable willingness to listen to criticism .
I'll be interested to see how they respond to this thread, particularly in the context of another couple that have been reported in recent days.

Well, at the risk of stating the obvious, for me perfect would probably never having had the experience of it being unpleasant.

I've posted several times that I think MNHQ do a good job. It's incredibly difficult on a discussion board to find a line between debate and those who try to be offensive, to allow questions while resisting stereotyping and nonsense.

I'm not concerned by my bad experiences on the SN board.
In the scheme of things, however shocking it was to me, it was sometime ago and I don't rely on the SN board for anything anymore.
It has however been a huge help to me over the years. I just think that allowing ourselves to imagine that it serves every need and greets every unfamiliar face with equal warmth is unrealistic.

What?

I'm not saying anything complicated. Are you spoiling for a fight or something?

Is it your board? Have I critiqued it and upset you?
Either you are being a bit thick for some reason I don't understand or you are being oddly defensive about the SN board.
I'm going to sleep. I have to be up in four hours.

The SN board can be shit at times. No ones fault - that's life.
