Heads up - we're about to introduce a wee (it's really not that big) site update...

1001 replies

JustineMumsnet · 16/03/2016 11:09

Morning folks,

As some of you pointed out at the time, the new navigation bar we introduced a little while back on the desktop site sits a little uncomfortably with what goes underneath it, design-wise.

So today we're introducing a little refresh of the rest of Talk. This update is also a bit closer to the mobile version, which it currently clashes with, so those who frequently switch from desktop to mobile will get a less variable experience.

If you use Mumsnet solely on mobile or tablet: as you were! Nothing’s going to change for you.

For desktop users, the functionality is unchanged (except for the addition of a threads I'm on button on the left hand side) but the fonts will look a little different.

We realise that any change can be difficult (and not necessarily welcome!) but please do give it a few days, as very often, we find, things like this just take a little getting used to and soon enough you've moved on and won't remember the difference.

As ever, we’re really keen to have your feedback, though, so do post below with your thoughts (we’re confident that you will Grin). Also, if anyone fancies getting involved in the testing of this kind of stuff, do shout, we're always looking for volunteers.

We’ll switch everything over in the next hour or so - let us know what you think! We’ll keep this thread stickied in Site Stuff and Active Conversations throughout at the day.

Flowers Justine

silverbirch Grin genius.

I use Firefox, Adblockplus seems to work. Also have ghostery to block all trackers.

I'm on a laptop mostly. The adblockers don't seem to work on the Amazon fire but I don't use it for much beyond internet TV.

PelvicFloorClenchReminder · 16/03/2016 22:26

You've redecorated.

Hmm... I don't like it.

magimedi · 16/03/2016 22:26

A (Silverbirch)

FFS, MNHQ - pull your collective fingers out & retire this crap font.

Now!

Please.

Me too, Maryz,

Can we be the blind leading the blind??

BlackeyedSusan · 16/03/2016 22:52

too white. too headache inducing.

surely fewer readers, spending less itme will reuslt in less income from advertising.

PosieReturningParker · 16/03/2016 23:00

I thought it was my threatening to shut down with 60000 photos damn Mac again!!

trufflesnout · 16/03/2016 23:10

Why is mine BOLD? I know a lot of people want it bold but honestly I think it's worse. The letters are too narrow to be this heavy for large bodies of text. Now even the writing in textboxes is bold for me where it was regular before. WTH is anyone else having this!? I use a Mac (v10.11.2) and Chrome (v49.0.2623.87).

also tech's system for embedding images in threads with stacked url's or whatever it's called is bloody ridiculous and I've never thought to bring it up before but there you go, just embed it/host it like a normal fecking website stop hiding them in link after link

I'm another migraine with aura sufferer and have also struggled with the new font on the PC.

I'll just use the mobile site instead for the moment.

caroldecker · 16/03/2016 23:35

Some (many?) of us, use the desktop site because we don't like the mobile version - finding this hard to read.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 16/03/2016 23:47

Right, it's morning here. I'm pleased to see that you've changed the font in the message box, huge relief there - but TIO is still an instant headache, and that's after hours away from it!

Please please please sort out TIO, it's just too painful to use.

Oh and the side buttons now have white writing on them instead of purple, which is an obvious improvement.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 16/03/2016 23:48

Yes, just to say too that I hate the mobile version with a passion - if I MN on the tablet, I use the desktop site. Haven't even gone there to look at this on the tablet though, I MN on the laptop 98% of the time.

ExtraHotLatteToGo · 16/03/2016 23:52

I've come back to have anther look, but I can't even read the thread. It hurts. Font size is fine. Not actually sure what the problem is, all I know is it hurts.

claig · 17/03/2016 00:02

'Why is mine BOLD? '

Mine is BOLD, Firefox on Windows 10.

It is bold but it is no good, probably more boldly painful and jarring, the blurring is just bolder.

I think different browsers interpret the font differently.

nattyknitter · 17/03/2016 00:03
Biscuit

I've also returned to give it another chance, but after 2 pages of threads of the text swimming before my eyes I'm giving up. I've tried adjusting my screen brightness down, wearing sunglasses, borrowing someone glasses (that I don't usually need) and rum. None of them have worked. The words are still jumping around.

I'll try again in a few days in the hope you will have fixed it by then, but if not I won't be back.

Are you reading all the posts, MNHQ? Will you take notice of all of us who are struggling? ( I have poor eyesight and astigmatism too. I'm finding it hard to focus).

I really don't understand how Justine could say we're about to introduce a wee (it's really not that big) site update... and that the fonts will look a 'little' different.

The change is huge and you cannot have tested it on a broad range of users.

A few days won't make a ha'p'orth of difference.

slithytove · 17/03/2016 00:24

It's rubbish. So much white I'm having to squint and have turned iPad brightness down to 10%.

Can't read anything with strike through and finding bold hard as well, it's too compressed. Eyes hurting now.

I'm using safari.

Mummylin · 17/03/2016 00:28

I am glad that at least the message box has been changed, but the rest of it is rubbish.please take notice MNHQ of how many people are having problems reading the site. Did you start the thread for lurkers in case you lost some of the long time posters ?

thatwouldbeanecumenicalmatter · 17/03/2016 01:38

Sorry I don't like the font - it's too small and narrow.

It's like when you get new prescription glasses, you feel abit nauseous, everything seems too detailed (yeah I'm that short sighted) and the whole sensation feels abit 'off'...

MapofTassie · 17/03/2016 03:56

The new font is giving me a head and eye ache. It's just too narrow.

nooka · 17/03/2016 05:32

I'm slightly surprised to say that I quite like, or at least don't dislike the change. Usually I'm very luddite, but this one doesn't bother me. I am on Firefox though and there does seem to be quite a difference between the different browsers.

My only complaint is that I now have a huge white space at the top of every thread (three swipes on my surface touchpad) I thought all the threads were blank to start with!

Arpege · 17/03/2016 05:38

Oh I like the new font.

It looks clean and modern

nooka · 17/03/2016 05:47

Although the text on my 'threads I'm on' page is ridiculously tiny now. Looks a bit silly it's so small!

I'm also wondering why each top page is different. Threads I'm on has tiny bold purple headers, and tiny subtext, with posters names in thin blue. Threads I'm watching has the same headers but larger text which is too close underneath so it looks very crowded, posters names also in thin blue. Last 15 mins has larger text all over, with bold blue headers and posters names also in bold blue. Plus it's indented and the bullets are different. I think those last two differences are pre this change though. Last hour is the same as last 15 mins, but last day is similar to threads I'm on (just no colour for posters names).

I use Classic

Iggi999 · 17/03/2016 06:38

Have come back to this after a break to see if it's any better. Still that feeling that I'm straining to read it. Really want an option for it to be different, more defined. Nothing to do with being a Luddite, it hurts!
