Heads up - we're about to introduce a wee (it's really not that big) site update...

1001 replies

JustineMumsnet · 16/03/2016 11:09

Morning folks,

As some of you pointed out at the time, the new navigation bar we introduced a little while back on the desktop site sits a little uncomfortably with what goes underneath it, design-wise.

So today we're introducing a little refresh of the rest of Talk. This update is also a bit closer to the mobile version, which it currently clashes with, so those who frequently switch from desktop to mobile will get a less variable experience.

If you use Mumsnet solely on mobile or tablet: as you were! Nothing’s going to change for you.

For desktop users, the functionality is unchanged (except for the addition of a threads I'm on button on the left hand side) but the fonts will look a little different.

We realise that any change can be difficult (and not necessarily welcome!) but please do give it a few days, as very often, we find, things like this just take a little getting used to and soon enough you've moved on and won't remember the difference.

As ever, we’re really keen to have your feedback, though, so do post below with your thoughts (we’re confident that you will Grin). Also, if anyone fancies getting involved in the testing of this kind of stuff, do shout, we're always looking for volunteers.

We’ll switch everything over in the next hour or so - let us know what you think! We’ll keep this thread stickied in Site Stuff and Active Conversations throughout at the day.

I'm having problems. My vision is very dominant in one eye, the font is making my weak eye ache like anything, I can't do more than 10 minutes on the site before needing to take a break.

Text on TIO and TIW is tiny.

When I go to customise, the options for Classic vs other versions isn't there.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 17/03/2016 06:45

No, Prof - I darent' go back into Customise any more, just in case I change anything and lose the option for Classic. I'm fairly sure MNHQ is edging it out as much as possible, which is dreadful for those of us who prefer it; so anyone who doesn't have it already won't be able to choose it any more. :(

I ended up stuck with the sodding social media sidebar when I went into Customise to change settings last time MNHQ were arsing around with things, and set it up so that EVERY thread we clicked on went into "Threads I'm Watching" - had to stop that, but got clobbered because of it.

ASmallHenInItsLateForties · 17/03/2016 06:51

Please change the font back mn!

This one is hard to read, so thin and small, and difficult to select the right thread in a list. Not getting on with it at all Sad.

zen1 · 17/03/2016 06:52

Tried dipping in and out for a few hours now and I'm finding the new font is definitely giving me eye-strain. It's too faint and narrow so I'm having to really concentrate to follow it. I can only read it properly when the text is emboldened.

TiggyD · 17/03/2016 06:53

I don't like it.

The words I'm focused on reading aren't too bad, but the text around it swirls and hurts my eyes, and if I read too fast it all swirls about. It's all too close together.

bigbuttons · 17/03/2016 06:54

I don't like this font. I always had classics. Please give me that option back.

QueenElizardbeth · 17/03/2016 07:06

Oh I see the font has improved slightly on AC and TIO.

This is the thing. You've used a perfectly lovely font for Discussions of the day, trending, posts on this thread and even in the message typing box it's lovely now as well.

WHY then have you used a strange, large, pale font on the other stuff?

Why not have this one throughout - it's by far the most intuitive font I've seen on the site in a while and I really like it.

Why do you have to have a separate, less good font for the active convos/TIO pages?

If it has to be larger, can't this font translate into a slightly larger version of itself?

It seems/looks daft having two different fonts.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 17/03/2016 07:19

Threads are still very difficult to read this morning.

GoEasyPudding · 17/03/2016 07:28

This font is a challenge. It is hard to read and headache inducing. I gave up reading yesterday and I've only come back this morning to add my thoughts.

MardyGrave · 17/03/2016 07:37

The font genuinely causes eye strain which leads to headaches. As others have said, it wasn't intended for the use of large bodies of text which is what a forum would use.

I'm pretty sure in the past you'd made clear that the mobile app was low on your list of priorities, so I haven't used it for the past 12/18 months, it's super clunky and frustrating to use, pretty much the opposite of what an app should be. Have you made changes to the app now? Can you differentiate op posts using colour etc?

BlackeyedSusan · 17/03/2016 07:46

no better this morning. still incredibly difficult to use on desk top firefox.

still eye strain and head ache inducing.

it is really bad that I have been spending less time on mn and more elsewhere.

Trumpton · 17/03/2016 07:50

I do not like it at all.
Typing this is very slow. I think I will go away for a while. >

Mysillydog · 17/03/2016 07:51

I normally use the mobile site on an iPad so I really like the change. It is cleaner and less cluttered.

MTPurse · 17/03/2016 08:00

So I have come back for another look and I still can't get on with this at all, far too difficult to read.

I just seen this though that made me laugh Lweji

they are offering prizes to lurkers who start posting. I feel a new persona emerging

The only prize I got when I de-lurked was a flaming on AIBU Grin

Mysillydog · 17/03/2016 08:04

I think maybe the font is a little small for us posters in our 40's who really need reading glasses

The phone app is fine, I shall use that I think.

NoelHeadbands · 17/03/2016 08:13

I use mobile on my phone and desktop on my iPad.

Both look fine

HPsauciness · 17/03/2016 08:13

I have discovered the secret of how to interact with the new font: don't read the thread.

Just read the first few posts, give up as your eyes hurt, then go to last and post your own message.

Totally annoying for those who have read the thread as you then post exactly the same thing again, but in honesty, they won't have been able to read four pages of this font either, so they won't know what you are saying is repetitive.

Perhaps now the time is nigh to introduce a like button, so you just like one of the first few posts to be posted and don't all try to actually read the whole thread.

Just a thought.

MTPurse · 17/03/2016 08:14

I'm wondering if that is what MNHQ are hoping to gain from this, getting everyone to use the app so they can phase out the desktop site?

QueenElizardbeth · 17/03/2016 08:24

Well same here, from someone who normally has MN on for much of the day, I've started actively avoiding it. It is very hard to look at. I will now be on the pprune and various aviation related sites for the rest of the day, if anyone wants me Smile

eatyourveg · 17/03/2016 08:25

Perhaps MNHQ could consider a 2 or 3 fonts for MNers to vote on?

So predictable that posters are prepared to flounce over any minor change.

MN will live without you.

Shelby1981 · 17/03/2016 08:38

This is the only thread I've read in the last 2 days - keep hoping you'll have seen sense and said you'll change it back. I'm on Safari on a Mac - people seem to think this is the better option, glad I haven't seen it on other browsers then! I actually feel sick after reading 4 pages of this thread.
