Heads up - we're about to introduce a wee (it's really not that big) site update...

JustineMumsnet · 16/03/2016 11:09

Morning folks,

As some of you pointed out at the time, the new navigation bar we introduced a little while back on the desktop site sits a little uncomfortably with what goes underneath it, design-wise.

So today we're introducing a little refresh of the rest of Talk. This update is also a bit closer to the mobile version, which it currently clashes with, so those who frequently switch from desktop to mobile will get a less variable experience.

If you use Mumsnet solely on mobile or tablet: as you were! Nothing’s going to change for you.

For desktop users, the functionality is unchanged (except for the addition of a threads I'm on button on the left hand side) but the fonts will look a little different.

We realise that any change can be difficult (and not necessarily welcome!) but please do give it a few days, as very often, we find, things like this just take a little getting used to and soon enough you've moved on and won't remember the difference.

As ever, we’re really keen to have your feedback, though, so do post below with your thoughts (we’re confident that you will Grin). Also, if anyone fancies getting involved in the testing of this kind of stuff, do shout, we're always looking for volunteers.

We’ll switch everything over in the next hour or so - let us know what you think! We’ll keep this thread stickied in Site Stuff and Active Conversations throughout at the day.

I'm on a Chromebook so, hmm, not much choice of swapping browsers. I did play about with a font extension thing and changed it to Comic Sans for my own amusement but it's just too pale and as though the letters have been trapped in a lift door.

BertieBotts · 16/03/2016 21:00

I did prefer the older font I have to say.

The text in the reply box is better now.

I feel like the whole effect is that the site is extremely white and pale with not much to break up the page.

I wonder if a subtle background colour change might help - like a pale blue with the post headers a darker blue. If you look at other forums, white and light blue is an unusual choice.

lamiashiro · 16/03/2016 21:00

I like it. Cheers, MN. Wine

DingleberryFinn · 16/03/2016 21:13

Setting my screen to 110% makes it better for me. At 100% it is legible, just strains my eyes.

UptownFunk00 · 16/03/2016 21:18

I'm normally really receptive to change and rarely moan about changes but I really, really dislike this font. I am VI and it's really long and strange and I feel like I have to squint more than usual just to read it.

It just feels elongated like an aliens fingernails.

I do hope you reconsider. If it isn't broke, why fix it?

What about Tahoma? Now that's a lovely font! Verdena even better and even Times New Roman.

Allalonenow · 16/03/2016 21:23

It's really difficult to read large/long posts now, for instance as those in Relationships often are, and the concentraition needed and the strain to the eyes means I will probably be coming here much less frequently.

I can't believe that this was tested by users and approved, possibly those with 20/20 vision would like it, but what about the rest of us?

I think I need Wine and Cake now!.

specialsubject · 16/03/2016 21:24

change isn't always good, but no-one who has been to management school and believed it will agree. MN doesn't like science so the rules of human-computer interaction will be binned in favour of the arty-farty stuff.

The font is a design disaster and spaces too big.

install an adblocker. Everyone should.

ASmallHenInItsLateForties · 16/03/2016 21:27

Not too keen on the font either, sorry mn.

SwedishEdith · 16/03/2016 21:27

What font is it?

eleflump · 16/03/2016 21:28

Not usually bothered at all about changes on the site and have never commented before, but have been reading threads for about ten minutes now and am going to have to stop due to my eyes feeling strained with the new font, it's also weirdly making me feel headachy and a bit queasy.

toldmywrath · 16/03/2016 21:38

I'm having difficulty with the new font as well, making my eyes hurt.

Marmite27 · 16/03/2016 21:39

Ok, where the Jeff has settings gone?

DarrenHardysDrongo · 16/03/2016 21:39

I posted earlier to say I was struggling to read it. It's not about not liking the style of the font, it's hard to focus on it. It's really faint and blurry.
I stayed off the site for several hours (unknown!) to let my eyes recover. Came back just now, my eyes are hurting again. It's a real strain to read it so I'm off again.

claig · 16/03/2016 21:40

'What font is it?''

It is Roboto a Google font although Loboto might be a better description

toldmywrath · 16/03/2016 21:41

specialsubject what ad blocker can you recommend please? (chrome)

BYOSnowman · 16/03/2016 21:42

Do you think mn are being paid by Google to use it?

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeG0es · 16/03/2016 21:43

I'm finding it better tonight in artificial light, but really struggled with it in daylight today.

HarrietSchulenberg · 16/03/2016 21:45

I am reading on an Android phone (5.1.1) and threads are an unreadable mess. The Active Convos list looks no different but the actual threads are too hard to bother reading, with font sizes varying from thread to thread and the side bars being too small to read so they are, in fact, pointless.
Is there not an Android app yet? There's nothing in the Play Store (but a search for Mumsnet brings up Netmums at the top of the list which can't be good for business).
I'm afraid that if my mobile version staya like this I won't be able to use it as it's too cluttered and messy. Sorry.

HarrietSchulenberg · 16/03/2016 21:48

This is what I see, and can't read.

Heads up - we're about to introduce a wee (it's really not that big) site update...
Wineandchoccy · 16/03/2016 21:52

The new font is awful and really hard to read, sometimes MNHQ change is not for the better!
I am using a tablet and you said nothing was going to change!

SilverBirchWithout · 16/03/2016 22:02

MNHQ need to start a thread in WWYD:

"At work we have implemented a new process for communicating with our service users, which had been recommended by our key investors as a way of promoting more effectively our main income stream. Unfortunately our service users feedback has been overwhelmingly negative and some of them have said they will be reducing their use of the service.

Which of the following WYD?

A) revert to the former process
B) stick with it a few weeks and potentially lose users
C) apologise and fast-track changes to adapt the new process to reduce some of the problems
D) get out the gin and hope it's all sorted itself out when you've sobered up"

paxillin · 16/03/2016 22:10

Thing is, D) will work just as well as A) Silver.

Samcro · 16/03/2016 22:11

How many people who are VI have to post sying it doesn't work for them before mn hq take note.

moveon · 16/03/2016 22:13

Love it

brighthouse · 16/03/2016 22:13

I am finding this font too hard to read. Have actually had to put my glasses on and iam on an iPad .
