Following on from discussion on another thread - could we have a Scottish section, please?

The local information is good, but it is too local to apply to the whole of Scotland, if you see what I mean.

Why? Confused

glasgowlass · 25/03/2015 11:40

Completely agree. MN local Glasgow has virtually no activity & it would be beneficial to have a Scotland wide topic to discuss things like education etc in which the system is completely different from the rest of the UK.
Go on MNHQ! Please! I will be yer pal.

StayingSamVimesGirl · 25/03/2015 11:44

Because there seems to be a groundswell of interest in a Scottish section, on another thread today, OwlCapone, and MNHQ want to know whether it would be a popular move.

Chicken keepers, equestrians, sporting events etc all have their own section - if there's interest, why not a Scottish section?

Why not an English, Irish or Welsh section? Or Surrey...

TwinkieTwinkle · 25/03/2015 11:49

Yes, yes, yes!

MorrisZapp · 25/03/2015 11:52

If English, Irish and Welsh MNers would like a topic then they can also ask MNHQ.

slicedfinger · 25/03/2015 11:52

owl, as Samvinesgirls said, some things, particularly education are completely different in Scotland.

Would you mind if expats popped by occasionally? Super idea.

MorrisZapp · 25/03/2015 11:53

Oh god.

This is going to end up with a '-gate', isn't it.

HairyHandedFucker · 25/03/2015 11:53

Owl, because some things are different up here - certain laws, for example. Plus the MN Local groups haven't really taken off hugely.

Paintedpinksapphires · 25/03/2015 11:55

Another vote for 'Mawsnet' here!!

Go on MN Towers!!! Pretty please??

Owl if there is support for those sections why not. However given that Scottish law, education and politics (not to mention culture) have some distinct differences to the rest of the UK it would be useful. We're not building Hadrian's wall, all would be welcome.

I imagine lots of Scottish MNers living elsewhere might enjoy it too.

Christinayangstwistedsister · 25/03/2015 11:55

Yes please...mean aye

gingysmummy · 25/03/2015 11:57

great idea would love a scottish topic

tabulahrasa · 25/03/2015 11:58

OwlCapone - things like education aren't the same, so if I want to ask something about schools, I have to make it really really obvious I'm in Scotland, point out that it's a different system and still field lots of people trying to be helpful that are posting completely irrelevant things.

If I want to ask about ASNs I have to change all my vocabulary and explain why there isn't a SENCO and that there is no statementing...you also tell people exactly who they should be contacting about issues and are completely overwhelmed by posters from elsewhere in the UK who don't know the system.

I'd assume people have similar issues if they want to talk about legal issues...or anything else that's different.

For lots of things it makes no difference whatsoever where posters are from, but, sometimes, for some things it'd be handy to have a Scottish section.

Paintedpinksapphires · 25/03/2015 11:58

We could love bomb HQ with tablet...

alittleegglayonaleaf · 25/03/2015 12:04

Yes please

mayaknew · 25/03/2015 12:22

Yes yes yes !!!!

So many threads have .. "I'm in Scotland btw" because it matters to the story and default nationality on MN is english . I love when I find a fellow Scot on a thread Grin

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 25/03/2015 12:23

Yes please.

Two reasons (both excellent Grin )

Population wise Scotland has a far smaller population than rUK. The MN local things are useful for very local specific stuff (play groups etc) however the local sections do not have enough users to sustain any sort if chat. A Scotland topic would allow those of similar geographic area to chat together in context (much like MN boards are generally, by default, English)

Scottish law, education, NHS etc are completely different to rUK, thus Scottish MNers posting on these topics often get unhelpful/irrelevant information. Even when a poster specifically says they arw in Scotland, general unawareness of the differences means English posters tend to pile in too. I'm sure it would be far easier to create a Scottish topic to cover all these things things, rather than essentially duplicate all of the education/health/legal topics with a Scottish version

AbsInTheClub · 25/03/2015 12:29

I'm English, living up here the now (did I get that right! Grin). I would find it useful to have a Scottish section.

LoisWilkersonsLastNerve · 25/03/2015 12:42

Haw mnhq! Git oan wi it.

Please Wink

GrouchyKiwi · 25/03/2015 12:46

Mawsnet. Love it.

Agree that it would be useful for the reasons stated above.

FannyFifer · 25/03/2015 13:04

A mawsnet section wld be good. Grin

Momagain1 · 25/03/2015 13:14

Checking in. Does that count as a vote in favor or something?

I am off to take the wee boy to an appointment. But want to say to all the Glasgow Maws: let's plan a meet up thing for the week of April 20, after they school aged kids have gone back?

OneTwoManyLots · 25/03/2015 13:18

Great idea! And I love the name Mawsnet. Grin

Momagain1 · 25/03/2015 13:19

Tabula: yes, yes, I havent even bothered using mumsnet as an SN resource, and one of the first things one of the local parents said was to be very careful reading anything about the subject online as .uk addresses usually would be discussing everything in terms of England.

Has left me rather clueless and very much struggling. (The wee boys appointment is part od the evaluation process, as it happen.)

OOAOML · 25/03/2015 13:31

As long as calling ourselves 'maws' isn't compulsory because nobody I know does Wink

I rarely look at the local (Edinburgh) topic, seem to remember it gets dominated by private school chat.
