Official Mumsnet mobile thread part 3

Morning all,

And welcome to the new thread!

As SarahMumsnet said at the end of the last thread, we have Tech on call for fixes this weekend, and various MNHQers will be here to talk and help wherever we can.

We'll be adding to the rolling list of bugs, glitches and dislikes (see below), so please keep the feedback coming. Do remember to list which device you're using, which operating system, and which browser, so we can identify the specific issues.

Right then, who's first?

Well, just to confirm that I am still having these problems (though I suppose no one has been around to work on these issues since I last posted)

Samsung Galaxy S3, Android 4.3, default browser (it doesn't seem to have a name)

The mobile site seemed to be working as it should for me when it first launched.

Then a few days ago the following problems developed:

• Accessing any thread from 'TIO' loaded the thread as one long page, rather than paginated (despite my custom settings)

• These long threads (in the case of threads with hundreds of posts) started timing out in their attempt to load, the page generally becoming unresponsive and forcing me to close the browser

• Clicking on thread titles, either from TIO or from a board, has become a nightmare: I thump away at the screen and nothing happens, finally a thread might open but it's not the one I was tapping on, it's from a link that was a few threads down

• Thread titles have stopped showing up in TIO. Before they were there but not clickable on, now they are not there at all

• Once I've typed a post out it's become practically impossible to scroll up and check what I've written for typos before clicking 'post', as only a few lines of text are visible and I just keep getting bounced off to the top of the page as soon as I attempt to scroll up in the text box.

...so basically all these things are conspiring to make the mobile site basically unusable for me right now, am here on my laptop with the desktop site to type this and it's like a relevation!

HTC, no idea as Ds sorts the rest for me.
It's got worse. Still no icons in ellipses, nothing in what u gather is the mumsnet rectangle, no chevron , nada.

And now logging me out which it wasn't.

If we are Mumsnet, I hereby name this Grendel's mum ( with apologies to any MNetter who has that name).

But thanks to all at MN centrale who have been working on this.

was fine until today but now I have to tap everything at least 3 times to get it to work.

very slow and jumpy.

still hate the white and have barely been on all weekend because it gave me a migraine on saturday.

But TIO slow loading and titles take forever to show up. Have to triple tap or more on a post to open a thread... just frustrating.

I have tapped and tapped in TIO till I feel like a tappy twat, and I still can't open a thread.

Evening everyone. Just thought we'd post an updated rolling list again for anyone just joining this thread so you can see what we've already got on the list and where we are with it:

Threads I'm On live links in thread titles and topic titles, restoration of bookmarks, as well as speed and functionality on certain devices (including thread names not showing at all and all threads loading as one page) - will be looked at next week

Bookmarks not working, and threads loading all on one page even when the user has not customised them that way NEW ISSUE - please give us feedback and LET US KNOW WHAT DEVICE, OS AND BROWSER you're using

Words in titles getting broken across lines - low priority but on the list

Original post no longer at top of paginated pages - low priority but on the list for discussion

Clicked-on threads don't change colour - will be looked at soon-ish

Lack of navigation at the top of the page - next/previous buttons - please keep the feedback coming

No 'm' next to stickied threads in boards other than Active - low priority but on the list

Accessibility issues/glaring - high priority - will be looked at early next week

Battery use - especially on Android we're investigating this issue - please keep the feedback coming

Ads that flicker or move - we're trying to find out if we can block these pre-emptively but for now please report them (mention the brand name or include a screenshot please)

Don't like having to double-tap to get to Active Convos or to reply - please keep the feedback coming

Adding top/bottom of page shortcut buttons - please keep the feedback coming, but you can navigate to the top of the page via the ellipses/three dots menu at the bottom right of each post

No All posts on one page button - please keep the feedback coming, but you can do this via customise under the sub-menu. (NB you must be logged in to see the sub-menu: it's under the downward-pointing chevron under the three main icons in the top right of the page)

No notification that PMs have been sent - low priority but on our list

Picture issues - will try to look at next week

Go To [page] doesn't work - is this still an issue?

Jumpy switch between portrait and landscape on iOS devices - is on our list

No option to turn off social media sharing buttons - is on our list

Galaxy Ace and Nokia Lumia compatibility problems, also some Apple device users unable to post at all - will try to look at this early next week

No MNHQ have commented on this thread link - will add to list

SN Topics look silly in Topics list because 'Special Needs' takes up too much space - is on the list

Want ability to hide threads in Active Convos list without going into thread first - will add to list

Make white space around banner ad transparent - low priority but on the list

Sony Ericsson Xperia Pro - blank circles / no ellipses - added to list of compatability problems, will be addressed early next week

Blue toolbar drifting around screen - problem for both Android/iPhone - being investigated

Screen freezing when trying to post message - esp. iPhone 5s/Safari/iOS 7 - added to list

Font size needs addressing - flagged to Tech

Want it to be easier to namechange again - working on this week

When clicking on blue bar at bottom, is diverting to an ad if an ad underneath, not to button pressed - will add to list

Threads I'm Watching - problems accessing it but also no longer seems to update with number of posts since user last viewed it - will add to list

A few quick answers which may help some of you.
Coffeeandcakes To switch off the blue bar at the bottom: Go to your user icon (top right of the screen, the middle icon with a person in a circle); the option to turn off the shortcut buttons is at the very bottom of that menu.

Bankwadger this is a possible getaround I'm afraid, not a cure yet, but if you only have the circles (with no icons in) lots of people are finding if they jab where it 'ought' to be, it's working. So for 'Watch a thread' try clicking in the small circle, just below the three larger circles. That should bring up a menu in which 'Watch this thread' is left column, second down.
Regarding not being able to access TIO - daft question but have you tried double-tapping? This is also working for some people.
Sorry - those weren't dreadfully helpful answers but worth a shot until these things are fixed.

Everyone else Thanks for all your feedback over the weekend. We're logging it all and you should start to see more improvements over the next few days.

How do you find the 'Unanswered Threads' now?

Also I can only see half the smiley/ italic/ attachment/ preview/ post buttons when I'm writing text for a message. I don't actually use the buttons because they are too small to access easily. Which is a shame as they seem like a great idea. :)

Okay, I thought I had my pages back but I guess I don't. Some threads show pages but some, like this thread, had all the posts on one page. So still having problems with. feel like a parrot repeating

When you click on Watching I can't find a bump and reset button. I'm presuming that's something that's being looked at and also that it will put the correct amount of posts that have been posted since you last checked it. And lastly that it will take you to the first of the new posts on that thread rather than putting you at the start?

Iona, thanks for the tip on how to switch off the blue bar. It does seem easier to read a thread without it. Although the whiteness does seem more obvious now without the blue bar, especially on long threads like this one.

Regarding ads, most of them seem to change which is disconcerting, but just saw one from O2 pay & go that was constantly changing which was horrible!

What BearFeet said. Bump and reset etc options were very useful.

On TIO, the quotation marks are annoying and they take up space. Especially as there's a space between the " and the start of the quotation. It all adds to the spread out feel which I really dislike. I'd much rather have more text per screen and therefore less flaming scrolling!

How do you want us to report scrolling i.e. moving ads at the top of the screen? On this thread?

TeenyfTroon - So glad I'm not the only one who finds the quotations annoying. There's no practical reason for them. We already know it's apply.

I can tolerate the new mobile design to an extent but they should have left some of the "layout" the same i.e the TIO and font.

I can hide the blue buttons, but I have to re- hide them every 24 hours or so. Obviously not a massive priority, but why can't they just stay hidden?

Please please please restore the ability to post under a different name when posting on the mobile site. Clicking into profile, filling in password etc is too much faff on a mobile device (and either way I was getting error messages trying to do that). For those who use different nicknames for different purposes / to protect anonymity it's such a useful feature.

When you go into your account, there seems to be no way back to the Talk boards. I was in my account and wanted to go to TIO. I clicked on the little arrow where it normally is, and the options were something like Children, Newsletter, basically account type options for your profile. The only way I could see to get back to the boards was to click on the Mumsnet logo, which takes you to the main page (which looks like a completely different site compared to the boards now) and then click Talk.

MNHQ - I am still having problems posting most of the time. I get the circle of death for ages and nothing posts. Please help!

I keep having threads load when I am clicking on active or tio

Another to add to the Windows phone compatibility list (Nokia Lumia 8.1, IE latest version) :

When starting a thread, I don't get the bottom of the letters in the title box. (I did mention this on beta testing but doesn't seem to have been sorted)

All seems to be working fine on my phone. Xperia Z2 using Chrome.
I just dislike it. It's stark and square and clunky. The old site was neat and user friendly with nice curved buttons and warm colours. Everything was convenient and above all, simple! I like simple.

The app has always had so many complaints, I just don't understand why MN has messed with the method of accessing the site that was the most comfortable to use and left the one that was pants! I'm going to try and use the desktop site on my phone because I'm doing far too much housework since this rolled out. I ironed socks yesterday!

This is odd, but after the migraine-triggering episode with the new mobile site last week, I am feeling sick even using the desktop version. It has been like some kind of MN-aversion therapy for me. Clearly a message that I need to get on with the rest of my life.
