Hi all,

As you know we have launched the new mobile site, we know it's a big change and we are still very keen to get it right with your help. This is very much a version that will evolve with your help as part of the testing process.

There have been a few glitches that have/are being ironed out and the HUGE thread has nearly maxed out, so we thought it best to start a shiny new one.

We know change is tricky but, as with most things MN, we are all ears and happy to look at any feedback you have on ways we can improve the new site.

Thanks all Thanks

I've noticed that many people are double/triple etc are posting. Is this due to the double tap or because it takes too long/doesn't show it's posted? Wouldn't returning to once tap solve the problem. I don't understand why it was changed in the first place. Just curious...

AmyMumsnet · 22/08/2014 13:06

To everyone who has flagged the portrait to landscape issue, just to confirm we passed this on to tech, but we've had a play on our phones at HQ and when we turn them back to portrait we get taken back to the same place on the thread.

Can you please tell us which phone and browser you're using?

TheOneWiththeNicestSmile · 22/08/2014 13:09

iPhone 5s
iOS 7 1 2
Safari

On mine:

looking at posts in portrait at around 1210
turn to landscape and drop to very bottom of page
turn back to portrait & shoot up to around 1030

Hi Multiple, we tend to get double or triple posts across the site fairly often. We haven't noticed any increase since the new mobile site, but we'll keep an eye out for any changes.

You're coming in on Monday? On a Bank holiday? ShockGin for that

livelablove · 22/08/2014 13:13

I am double posting due to some kind of glitch that I mentioned earlier that i think is related to how the new site interacts with windows version on my phone. I haven't been able to post elsewhere on MN till i work out how to stop this.

Ah - I have made a discovery about the portrait/landscape thing

The first time I do it, from any point towards the bottom of the page, it goes down to the bottom & shoots up to 1034

Then if I do it again at 1034 it does go back to the same point

If I leave the page, then come back & repeat from the bottom, it goes up to 1034 again Confused (it's a post of Rowan's)

LittleBearPad · 22/08/2014 13:17

That was nicely demonstrated livela.

LittleBearPad · 22/08/2014 13:18

Have you bookmarked the 1034 post?

PinkSquash · 22/08/2014 13:20

My bookmarking function isn't working properly- I'm being taken to a post on page 11 each time. Even when I bookmarked my last post.

TobyLerone · 22/08/2014 13:20

Someone kindly informed me that the number next to the title in TIO is (pointlessly, IMO) the number of pages. This thread is showing as 18 in TIO, but actually has 30 Confused

TobyLerone · 22/08/2014 13:21

And now it says 1.

LittleBearPad · 22/08/2014 13:21

The numbers on TIO seems to be number of posts since my last one but including my own post ie 2 when I last looked. Seems to only get up to 18 though. The site is ignoring 19 and any higher numbers.

LittleBearPad · 22/08/2014 13:22

That was a coincidence Toby

livelablove · 22/08/2014 13:22

Just testing if i double post usingthe desktop site.

Just back on mumsnet after my hols, when I saw the new layout I was hoping it was a problem and it would be back to normal soon.

I think it's a case of if it ain't broke don't fix it, and IMO the old layout wasn't broke.

TobyLerone · 22/08/2014 13:22

Ha. I think there are 7 pages since I last posted!

Coumarin · 22/08/2014 13:23

Thank you for now communicating. Flowers Realise you were probably climbing the walls yesterday.

I don't think these are 'technical' issues but I'll post 'em now in case I don't come on again.

iPhone 5s
iOS 7.1.2
Safari

The ad is the most annoying thing. I'm very glad I haven't seen the 'German ivf' ad a pp mentioned. I come on here sometimes to take my mind off infertility and treatments etc. I don't want to be seeing that all the time.

It's still like looking through a letterbox. Even without the task bar at the bottom.

Main thing atm is seeing the list of hidden threads on threads I'm on. I don't want to see them. I've hidden them. Where they were last time was perfect as they were still accessible but had to be looked for so you could hide and forget.

FiveGetIntoTrouble · 22/08/2014 13:27

WRT the landscape / portrait issue, it only happens towards the bottom of a thread. If you're near the start & turn your phone to the side & to again, you return to the same place.
If you are nearer to the end and do the same, you end up nearer to the top of the thread.

LittleBearPad · 22/08/2014 13:30

Coumarin do you scroll up or down on your iPhone?

If you scroll up then the safari buttons will show up at the bottom and the top bar will show the address making your reading space smaller than if you read down when these disappear/get smaller. Just a thought.

The question of ads and battery usage is interesting. Looking at the src, they're delivered by google ad's, which in turn are delivering ad's from RadiumOne. Looking at one of the URLs, it has a Lat and Lng, indicating my position (one of the ad's is for a bus company in my area, so they're obviously location targeted advertising, even if just at a course grained level). This in itself would use greater battery than just presenting a standard ad image. Then making it animate would also increase battery usage.

Looking at the page loading in a mobile browser, there were 206 requests to the server. Each one of those is transmitting data from the browser to the site and back again. Each one of those requests consumes battery. Some of those requests are to MN itself, while a good number are directly to tracking and advertising sites.

One of the tenet's of mobile web design is to reduce as far as possible the number of requests back and forth to the server so as to reduce radio usage, processing and thus battery consumption.

Some of those could easily be solved my MN (ie, combining the individual smiley images into a single image, for example), but there are so many scripts loading from other sites that no wander it's going slow. Eg:

rubiconproject.com
google-analytics.com
adnxs.com
cloudfront.com
facebook.com
googlestndication.com
pintrest.com
gwallet.com
voicefive.com
doubleclick.com
... and more...!

and so on.... each of these loading things from the web. Each of these use more battery.

Sherborne · 22/08/2014 13:32

(Of course, Ad's have to be here, but surely there is a balance to be struck?)

Sirzy · 22/08/2014 13:34

I am sure it has been asked already but it's hard enough to navigate without trying to got through the whole thread but when I click on the threads from TIO it takes me to the first post, I want to come to the last post not what I had already read
