Official Mumsnet mobile thread numéro deux

Hi all,

As you know we have launched the new mobile site, we know it's a big change and we are still very keen to get it right with your help. This is very much a version that will evolve with your help as part of the testing process.

There have been a few glitches that have/are being ironed out and the HUGE thread has nearly maxed out, so we thought it best to start a shiny new one.

We know change is tricky but, as with most things MN, we are all ears and happy to look at any feedback you have on ways we can improve the new site.

Thanks all Thanks

@mypussyiscalledCaramel

Crabb You have to go onto the desk top site. Go into customise and click yes, then save.

Thank you!

MsMarvel · 22/08/2014 12:14

I can see the 'm' on the active threads list, but if you actually just go into the chat topic, there isn't any indication about which threads are stickied. Unless it's just me and everyone else can see it?

RowanMumsnet · 22/08/2014 12:15

@mypussyiscalledCaramel

Is there a refresh button somewhere that I'm missing? At the moment I have to go to TIO then come back to the thread

I think these are usually on browsers, not within the websites themselves? eg on iOS it's in the top right of the browser nav bar.

MamaMary · 22/08/2014 12:16

Has it been explained why this change was made?

The old mobile site was MILES better. Why change to one that's crap? The posts are two big and spaced out. It's awkward and time-consuming to navigate. There's no button to go to 'top'. When I click on Threads I'm Watching it takes for ever to come up, and then never at the last post I read (as it used to). The ads are huge and take up so much of the screen.

I'm an HTC Android phone, use Google/Chrome.

I'm writing this from my PC as I can't bear it on my mobile now and won't be using it. It's probably a good thing as I'll be on MN far less now.

mypussyiscalledCaramel · 22/08/2014 12:18

Rowan That's decent of you Grin but it was pointed out by someone else yesterday buried in the thread somewhere.

Coughle · 22/08/2014 12:20

I can't see it either. I think it's supposed to be the last option in the ellipses menu.

Google Nexus.

I can't see them anywhere else either - are they not only stickied in active though?

There's no button to go to 'top

You should see one underneath the posting box, also in the drop down menu (...) after every post.

When I click on Threads I'm Watching it takes for ever to come up, and then never at the last post I read (as it used to).

If you bookmark your place it will take you there when you enter thread.

LadyIsabellaWrotham · 22/08/2014 12:21

Rowan, is someone working on a stickied compendium of FAQ/Top Tips? It would really help tidy the gripey threads, because the same questions are being asked over and over.

SoonToBeSix · 22/08/2014 12:22

Rowan , thanks for answering my question. I do understand there needs to be adverts , if they didn't move it wouldn't be so bad , also it take up a lot of space and creates a letter box affect, at least on an iphone screen.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 22/08/2014 12:22

And yup, refresh is a browser function

SwedishEdith · 22/08/2014 12:24

God, moaning about this is such good displacement activity

I actually counted the number of words on screen from a Guardian article - there were approx 170 words,

For mn, a normal post that took up the whole screen = 90 words

That's a lot of wasted space

And mnhq's replies - the text looks more condensed on them

Sony experia Android Chrome

Hi ms, thanks for flagging that, we'll sort that out for you.

LadyIsabellaWrotham · 22/08/2014 12:24

Also I get that bookmarking will keep your place or would if it worked reliably, but it's an entire extra step, which was previously not required, so having to do it is a definite deterioration in ease of use.

We're really sorry you don't like it.

Obviously (well, we hope it's obvious) it was never our intention to take away something good and replace it with something crap.

Websites need to update, add some bits of functionality, re-jig menus and buttons and so on - it's how the web works. We've based the new mobile site on tests and analytics that gave us info about which functions were used most, which were under-used etc - and have tried to 'foreground' heavily-used ones.

Obviously we haven't got it completely right, but overall we're really hoping that when users have got used to the new appearance - and we've added some new functions and changed those that are really annoying people - you'll mostly find it's a cleaner, slicker, better experience.

Tech are working on TIO right now and we really hope to have a fix for this some time today.

Ads are a necessity we're afraid: Mumsnet wouldn't exist without them. But we're going to test different ad positions and see what works best.

SoonToBeSix · 22/08/2014 12:25

That's great they will look at accessibility issues , thanks Rowan. I promise to sit on my hands and not mention the "w" word again.

mypussyiscalledCaramel · 22/08/2014 12:25

Coughle go onto desktop into customise tick yes in bookmark option, save it, then come back over. It will be in the ellipsessseses thenGrin.

Who didn't think of putting that in the customise menu on the mobile site.

smilingthroughgrittedteeth · 22/08/2014 12:26

Im not having any major issues like a lot of people are but for me its just the white, ive literally read the last 4 pages of this thread and am now going to have to log off because my eyes hurt.

MN hq posts are the only ones that I can read easily so im begging you to please change the background colour, I dont even care what colour it is just not this horrible glaring white Sad

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 22/08/2014 12:26

I've been trying it on and off over the last few days, my biggest gripe is that on TIO you can't see the first few words of the last few posts like before and you can't go to the last post, it always takes you to the beginning. Unless I'm doing something wrong. It's a showstopper for me, I won't be using it unless that changes.

mrssmith79 · 22/08/2014 12:26

Heartening to see mnhq on the ball and keeping everyone informed in real time Smile

My gripe of the day is that the differentiation in colour between threads I've not opened and threads I've already read has stopped resulting in my reopening threads I've already seen. Will this be returning at any point?

KateBeckett · 22/08/2014 12:26

Bookmarking isn't working properly - when I click it in the drop down menu it is very slick and tells me it's bookmarked, but when I come back to the tread it doesn't take me to the bookmark iyswim? Just stays at the top of the thread.

Pictures- I just get a tiny white box and no way to close it!!

MsMarvel · 22/08/2014 12:26

There's definitely stickies threads in chat, not sure about other topics

SunflowerStalks · 22/08/2014 12:27

This version really doesn't work for me. I use an LG One phone with android. The screen is really small so when the top 1cm is taken up by adverts and the bottom 1cm by buttons, it doesn't leave me much reading space.
The old version seemed to fit so much more onto the screen. I think the text was smaller or the lines were closer together perhaps?

Anyway, this version is really hard to read. If you can't go back to the old version please can we have a really really basic version as well?

mypussyiscalledCaramel · 22/08/2014 12:28

So I'm going to have to moan at the people who created my browser. Bugger.

RedNosedClone · 22/08/2014 12:28

Please please let us have the old site back, I HATE this new one.

And how do you mark a thread you want to watch?

Had people actually complained about the old site? It was so easy and clear to use.

This new layout is as clear as ditchwater Confused

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 22/08/2014 12:28

I know I can bookmark them BTW, but that's fiddly and an extra step that you didn't have to do before.
