Hands up everyone who wants to try out the BRAND NEW MUMSNET MOBILE SITE

RowanMumsnet · 20/08/2014 14:42

Hello comrades

As lots of you will know, we've been developing a brand new, souped up version of the Mumsnet mobile site for seven geological eras quite a long time now.

We can now exclusively reveal that the new mobile site is... TOTALLY AND UTTERLY ABOUT TO BE RELEASED, LIKE, ANY TIME NOW.

We've tested it on loads of MNers (Flowers to those who have helped out) but inevitably there will be glitches that only reveal themselves once tens of thousands of you dive in and start using it - so please use this thread to let us know about those (with the usual info about browsers and devices).

And if you like it, please pass along Cake and Wine to ShamTech, BrunoTech, JessicaMumsnet and all the other techs and MHQers who have been working their digits off on this.

The new improved apps are coming, honest... but in the meantime, if the old apps are driving you bonkers, do please take the new mobile site for a test drive.

Yeah owl I did see that but look, my ex was a techy type who made major software updates like thi and when the launch wwas delayed by gremlins it meant he swo d through the evening dealing with the usual timeof queries, glitches etc in the ffirsthhours after it went live. It'snormal to stick around for that.

Took me twenty mins totmistype the previous post and ten mins to do this one so apols for all the errors but I don't have time to change them.

Won't be posting again, sorry, if anyone replies it's not that I'm ignoring you its just that life is too short .

Scarletohello · 21/08/2014 08:36

Even though it's harder to read, I've gone to the desktop site on my mobile. Too much scrolling on this new version and not enough space to read posts. Hate the fact you can't get rid of that bloody advert at the top. It's made me really angry actually as it's deliberate and so cynical. I'd rather pay to use MN than have this.

jaynebxl · 21/08/2014 08:40

I also don't like that there aren't posts showing on 'I'm on' I am not explaining it very well but when you can see who has posted since you? I am not sure where to read from.

Me too. And it is just all too hard to decipher. I've got the new version on my phone but on the ipad it still looks the same. Think that means I'm done with reading mn on my phone, which may make me a little more productive in life!

sunbathe · 21/08/2014 08:45

I've been on about 5 minutes with my phone's brightness at the lowest it can go. I now have a headache and stinging eyes.

It really is unbearable.

sunbathe · 21/08/2014 08:47

As I only tend to access the net on my phone now , I really hope you give us a mobile classic option.

cungryhatterpillar · 21/08/2014 08:48

I was hoping I'd wake up this morning and they'd have fixed it.
On threads I'm on you used to be able to click on a poster's message rather than the actual thread title so you didn't have to scroll through the entire b thread to see the new messages. I will revert to desktop.

Some bits are better like the ease of smiley faces or text types, and I don't mind the change to where the bookmark/report parts are located, as it saves you hitting the accidentally. I see they've tried to achieve a more modern look which is fine...

But it falls short of satisfactory, as key features which were really useful have been removed. OP posts really need to be highlighted throughout thread, as do your own. The white is FAR too white and hurts your eyes, and the next/first/last page options need to be at the top as well as the bottom.

Strangely, I thought the app and the desktop site needed far more improving than the mobile site! The app is useless, I downloaded it and used it once, and I can't bear to go on mn on the PC. I found the mobile site really user friendly... Not so much now.

Why wasn't there anyone from Tech about? After it was clear it was going to launch at the end of the day why wasn't the launch out back to today. It's been really badly handled and the comments about learning to love it were really patronising, especially to people who were complaining about headaches, migraines or dyslexia making it hard to read. Badly done MNHQ

Scout19075 · 21/08/2014 08:57

Could you please tell me how to move the bar that has the "active/watching/etc" buttons? It's always in the middle of a post, often the OP but not always, but it's frustrating to miss a large chunk of text.

Thanks!

Ilovexmastime · 21/08/2014 09:01

It's looking much better today on my phone. I was the one complaining it didn't look right on my samsung galaxy s3 yesterday, but those issues are sorted now.

TeenyfTroon · 21/08/2014 09:08

Why didn't you introduce a few things at a time? The little dots - a good idea, easy to accept. The blue bar I can see why that's useful (thank God mine doesn't wander about!) and the font might be ok. It's hard to tell when it's on such a bright background.
The advert and spaced out look is AWFUL. I just can't be bothered to look at all my usual stuff.
It's a psychologist you need, even more than the techies.
I don't usually get my knickers in a twist over change but this has really annoyed me.

jaynebxl · 21/08/2014 09:10

Someone posted this on another thread and I agreed so much I wanted to post it here too in the hope TPTB will see.
On “threads I’m On” – it no longer tells me who was the last to post, I have to click in to it and the scroll ALL THE WAY DOWN. Sometimes, no-one new has posted and so it was pointless clicking into it and scrolling all the way down. What a waste of 30 seconds

PseudoBadger · 21/08/2014 09:10

I can't even post from it on my phone so I'm back to desktop view.
I had no issues or worries with the previous mobile site.

GlaceCherries · 21/08/2014 09:11

I'm on a Samsung Galaxy S4, using the mobile site through Chrome.

I like the general new look. But some useful features from the old mobile view seem to have disappeared:

Colour differentiation between the sponsored threads and user threads.

Colour differentiation between threads you have or have not read.

Taking you to the latest posts from threads "I'm Watching" or that "I'm On".

The thread navigation bar (first/previous/next/last buttons) are only at the bottom of the page, forcing you to scroll down before you can navigate through the thread.

If you can bring those features back... pretty please?

Needasilverlining · 21/08/2014 09:18

I am sorry, because I know you must have worked hard, but for me this is literally unusable.

I don't like all the white layout, adverts, larger text etc but I'm sure I'll get used to it in time.

However:
It is SO slow that even a 100 post page doesn't load properly. After ten minutes I am still getting 'Page not responding' and no option to reply. I'm typing this on my tablet because I cannot post from my phone (Samsung Galaxy s3 if it helps).

Threads I'm on/Watching- no option to see new posts or navigate to the last bit you read.

The drop downs don't respond for ages.

The OP's post only highlights once and the colours are seriously wishy washy.

I don't understand which bits are meant to be an improvement. You've removed tons of useful functionality and given a more boring layout which will incidentally give me RSI faster because I'll have to do so much more scrolling.

And yes, launching when there were no tech people about seems a bit odd. I've done this for work recently and we went live first thing in the morning, with a guide to use, and were on hand all day to provide tech support.

I do 90% of my MNing on the train, from my phone. I can't do that with the site as it is. PLEASE give us an option to retain the old version or I'm going to have to defect to Twitter or even FB.

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 21/08/2014 09:19

I like:
the little menu next to each post with the ... button
the smileys menu

I don't like:
the amount of white space and scrolling
the lack of navigation buttons at the top of the page
the blue bar at the bottom

I hate:
the way it hurts my eyes after a while
the permanent ad at the top
the lack of preview of messages on threads I'm on and watched threads

Things I think must be bugs:
when you zoom in the blue bar and the advert also get bigger until they meet in the middle. This is completely useless.

I clicked on my account and was asked to log in to make changes, I couldn't be bothered to do this so navigated away. It logged me out anyway.

RebeccaMumsnet · 21/08/2014 09:20

Morning all,

First and foremost HUGE error on our part with the timings of this release.

As you can see, we tried to get it going so that we were all here in the office to answer you all and then Tech ran into problems and we weren't as active as we should have been when the new site went live. Apologies all.

We will be going through this thread now and offering advice on functionality and responding to all of your questions. Tech are working on several of the glitches raised as we speak.

runlikeagirl · 21/08/2014 09:20

It colours the op in the first post, but not further down. And I can't hide threads in active anymore.

I don't mind the layout, but these things are ry irritating.

Tinkerball · 21/08/2014 09:22

Good luck Rebecca, you may be a long long long time!
