Hands up everyone who wants to try out the BRAND NEW MUMSNET MOBILE SITE

RowanMumsnet · 20/08/2014 14:42

Hello comrades

As lots of you will know, we've been developing a brand new, souped up version of the Mumsnet mobile site for seven geological eras quite a long time now.

We can now exclusively reveal that the new mobile site is... TOTALLY AND UTTERLY ABOUT TO BE RELEASED, LIKE, ANY TIME NOW.

We've tested it on loads of MNers (Flowers to those who have helped out) but inevitably there will be glitches that only reveal themselves once tens of thousands of you dive in and start using it - so please use this thread to let us know about those (with the usual info about browsers and devices).

And if you like it, please pass along Cake and Wine to ShamTech, BrunoTech, JessicaMumsnet and all the other techs and MHQers who have been working their digits off on this.

The new improved apps are coming, honest... but in the meantime, if the old apps are driving you bonkers, do please take the new mobile site for a test drive.

I prefer the old one. Visually this one is more difficult to see!

Needasilverlining · 21/08/2014 09:24

Rebecca, good to see you here and I appreciate the holding up of hands, but these are not glitches - they are major design flaws.

trikken · 21/08/2014 09:26

Visually I like it, its just not as good to use.

Cherriesandapples · 21/08/2014 09:27

I won't be using it as my eyes hurt now and the advert is really annoying!

GreenMouse · 21/08/2014 09:28

I got so fed up with the constant random long-winded refreshing and jumping to the top that I stopped using it. I used the app instead, which I don't like at all, but it's easier to use than this new mobile version.

It'll be good once the glitches are sorted though! :)

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 21/08/2014 09:29

Another I don't like: On the search page, search posts 'from' and 'to' - you have removed the yesterday and today options which means I have to actually know what day it is.

MorrisZapp · 21/08/2014 09:31

Oh dear. Well it's a major fail isn't it. I've seen so many major IT projects go this way at work.

it starts with a proud flourish and quickly turns to bafflement and then rage.

Then suddenly users get asked/ listened to and most of it changes back to the user friendly way it was before, with enough new features to save the project workers pride.

it's a huge exercise in futility but this is how it is now. If it ain't broke, pay consultants vast sums to break it, then pay them more to change a lot of it back.

bruffin · 21/08/2014 09:39

another tech problem
the counter on tio seems only to go to 18.
i assume the counter is for number of new posts since posting or something like that but its clearly not right

5madthings · 21/08/2014 09:41

Ok well I have been reading about 10-15mins this morning and am starting to get a headache from the glare.

Also the box at the bottom 'go to page' well everyone I try and use that it just takes me to the first page of the thread.

It's still not letting me keep show special needs topics ticked in my custom settings and it's still only highlighting the ops first post on a thread.

I do like the Smile bit and the way of adding pics etc seems ok. The blue bar is ok, the add at the top is irritating. But I could get used to some of these changes IF and only IF you sort the whiteness/glare out. If not I will actually just stop using mnet as its giving me a headache to the point of feeling sick.

EhricLovesTheBhrothers · 21/08/2014 09:41

TIO only ever went up to 18 posts for some reason, that's not new.

RebeccaMumsnet · 21/08/2014 09:42

@runlikeagirl

It colours the op in the first post, but not further down. And I can't hide threads in active anymore.

I don't mind the layout, but these things are ry irritating.

If you go to customise, you can turn the coloured OPs on for now but Tech are putting in a fix that will mean your current settings will be reflected on the mobile as soon as the fix is in place (hopefully later on today).

We also had some issues with the functionality of hide threads and watch threads but that function will be back shortly and we tell you where, when it goes live.

5madthings · 21/08/2014 09:43

Oh yes the counter thingy seems to just be random and doesn't change once I have looked at it anyway and I don't like that you can't actually see the new posts without going in to the thread.

Needasilverlining · 21/08/2014 09:44

And when I post, even on the tablet, I end up at the top of the page again and have to scroll down. Did the beta testers not mention any of this?

MrsHathaway · 21/08/2014 09:44

I notice that Samsung users are the worst affected, followed by iPhone. I use Chrome on (HTC) Android and am getting very few of the layout issues reported on this thread. The blue bar sits quietly at the bottom, the advert sits narrowly at the top and I don't even really see it any more, after just a couple of hours and things load slowly but not dysfunctionally. That is, as slow as the app, but not as though I'm on dial-up.

That said, we have superfast broadband here, so "a bit slow" might be equivalent to "DEAR GOD" on a normal broadband connection.

And I do have the bug that Highlight OP doesn't highlight OP.

Tech's priorities will be:
(1-20) fix bugs / dead links
(21) play with colours
(22) consider additional functionality.

What are our priorities?

From my reading of the thread, "play with colours" is a major issue and a deal-breaker for several posters (particularly those with epilepsy, migraines or dyslexia). It ought to be a quick fix, too.

Yes bugs.

Then the thread length/flip issues which are no doubt causing so much of the go-slow. I think if the site ran faster then some of the other objections about eg post numbering would be less pressing: at the moment you have to click in, wait to load, then scroll down, to see what new messages there are. That's not a problem in itself, only that it takes five minutes or more for some users.

Losing the "MNHQ has commented" and Topic headers/disclaimers seems like a backward step but I think that's going to be a big fix (read: complete rebuild), so I think that's gone forever and we shouldn't bang on about it.

Losing the ability to post with different NCs on different threads, which we had only just got and which was greeted with such gratitude and appreciation, is very disappointing.

Keeping my fingers crossed for the new app on the list to beta test it and that it will have some of the additional functions lost in the mobile switchover.

BiggerYellowTaxi · 21/08/2014 09:45

Right, I'm sure these gripes mild irritations have already been highlighted but here are the things I'm struggling with:

  • when bookmarking, it takes you back to top of the page, very disruptive
  • no page navigation buttons at the top of the page
  • OPs posts not highlighting even when selected in "Customise"
-number of post info only at the bottom of the page, not at the top

I think there were more but I've forgotten now.

MrsHathaway · 21/08/2014 09:46

Another I don't like: On the search page, search posts 'from' and 'to' - you have removed the yesterday and today options which means I have to actually know what day it is.

I love this objection and completely support it. You are dealing with users who are typically distracted, if not dangerously sleep deprived, and you have removed the option that every single other site and interface in the world is building in nowadays. Nice.

RebeccaMumsnet · 21/08/2014 09:47

@JazzAnnNonMouse

Stil can't see pictures very well though - need to be able to enlarge them

Hi Jazz,

The images will pop out when you click on them, this is a glitch at the moment that tech are looking at Blush

cardamomginger · 21/08/2014 09:53

So that's why it was all different on me last night and I couldn't work out where anything was.

tak1ngchances · 21/08/2014 09:57

I find it bizarre. MNHQ, wasn't the agency briefed to keep the look, feel, and U-Ex of the desktop site and previous mobile site?

It is like signing up for one thing and suddenly being given quite another. Extremely disconcerting and not good marketing

FoxSticks · 21/08/2014 09:57

Rebecca, I'm on a Samsung S3. I've customised highlight op but it still only highlights the initial post - I think that's another glitch.

MrsVamos · 21/08/2014 09:57

RebeccaMumsnet

Why have you not responded to the posters who have complained regarding issues with dyslexia, migraines and epilepsy ?

For me, it is like other posters triggering auras and gave me a bad headache last night, the remnants of which I am still feeling this morning.

Are these issues going to be addressed, or are users going to be asked to use the desktop if the mobile site is staying like this ?

Greythorne · 21/08/2014 09:59

RebeccaMumsnet
Please can you tell us who thought it was a good idea to remove the Hide Function? I hide 75% of threads. Did some bright spark think I would rather trawl through thousands of threads which are of no interest to me??

Nice.

RebeccaMumsnet · 21/08/2014 09:59

OK, we are going through the thread bit by bit and pulling together a list of all the issues raised. We will run through the list and fix anything that is broken or missing (like flip a thread) asap.

We will keep posting to let you know when these things are released.

Thanks all for your feedback, is it too early for Wine ? Maybe some Cake ?

MrsVamos · 21/08/2014 10:00

PS Have to get on old laptop now as this mobile site really is painful to use.

DHandhisgrossfoot · 21/08/2014 10:01

Something about the font is giving me a headache after about 5 min of reading.

I'm going to have to stay away until it's sorted Sad
