Hands up everyone who wants to try out the BRAND NEW MUMSNET MOBILE SITE

RowanMumsnet · 20/08/2014 14:42

Hello comrades

As lots of you will know, we've been developing a brand new, souped up version of the Mumsnet mobile site for seven geological eras quite a long time now.

We can now exclusively reveal that the new mobile site is... TOTALLY AND UTTERLY ABOUT TO BE RELEASED, LIKE, ANY TIME NOW.

We've tested it on loads of MNers (Flowers to those who have helped out) but inevitably there will be glitches that only reveal themselves once tens of thousands of you dive in and start using it - so please use this thread to let us know about those (with the usual info about browsers and devices).

And if you like it, please pass along Cake and Wine to ShamTech, BrunoTech, JessicaMumsnet and all the other techs and MHQers who have been working their digits off on this.

The new improved apps are coming, honest... but in the meantime, if the old apps are driving you bonkers, do please take the new mobile site for a test drive.

Can you answer one question for me please HQ ...

Why did you change it? What was wrong with the old version? Nobody seemed to have any complaints and it was lovely and simple?

Fairylea · 21/08/2014 07:23

They're not going to change back because this way they will get more revenue from advertising- the adverts are bigger and harder to miss. I guess in some ways that's a good thing because we all love the site, we don't want to pay to use it and advertising helps keep it free.

However..... I really think it needs to give you the names and first lines of the new posts in the threads I'm on bit and also page numbers at the top of the thread rather at the bottom. If I left the thread at page 4 I don't want to have to scroll to the bottom of each page to click the page number I want.

Frogisatwat · 21/08/2014 07:25

I also don't like that there aren't posts showing on 'I'm on' I am not explaining it very well but when you can see who has posted since you? I am not sure where to read from.

birdofthenorth · 21/08/2014 07:25

Very bizarre, is everything going to be rebranded in these fonts and colours eventually? I liked the purple! And just had to turn down the brightness in my whole phone to cope with the whiteness!

Please can someone tell me how to flip a thread now??

Lweji · 21/08/2014 07:43

For some positives:

I think the blue bar at the bottom was a really good idea, but it's stuck for me, it doesn't scroll. Although it could be because I'm on an old (4 year Shock ) iPod and on Safari.

I don't find it too glary, but I do adjust the screen accordingly to the surrounding light.
I like that you have the post's options (report and so on) as optional so that it doesn't take up space on the screen.
On my customise I have the newest posts at the top and have chosen to have 1000 posts on one page, so that is working well for me. However it does take a while to load despite the cleaner look (is it still too heavy?).

OwlCapone · 21/08/2014 07:44

They aren't listening are they

Really? Give them a chance!

It's 7:43 am. 8 hours ago they said We just hope that you'll all bear with us while we iron out the creases. As we've said, we are taking copious notes of all the issues raised, and our Tech folk will be along in the morning to answer all your queries.

Lweji · 21/08/2014 07:44

Oh and I don't get a huge advert at the top. It looks fine to me.

bruffin · 21/08/2014 07:57

there is a problem with loading
It is taking forever to load this thread and then i got the "stopped working" message.
i had to go to the ap to post this.

Cupacakethankooo · 21/08/2014 08:03

How do I get back to active easily? If I back button it goes back to a pre change page from days ago. It's ok, I'll get used to it but I don't think it's as clear as before, one post runs into another when you're reading because you can't sleep at 3am.

avocadoaddict · 21/08/2014 08:04

Apologies if this has also been mentioned, but it there something weird about the number of posts next to the thread titles? Doesn't look right to me.

Also, when you click on a thread and it opens up, you can't see the total number of posts in the thread.

And please mumsnet, answer the question as to why it was changed when it was fine before?

I've been reading for about 10 mins this morning and am already fed up (all over again) with this version....and I now have a headache but that could be partly wine induced

OwlCapone · 21/08/2014 08:05

How do I get back to active easily?

The "active" button on the big blue bar at the bottom?

Cupacakethankooo · 21/08/2014 08:07

Oh is there! I haven't seen that yet, only looked at 3am you see....ta.

Sleepwhenidie · 21/08/2014 08:10

I came on to ask the same as Frogis...is there a way of seeing the latest posts on the Threads I'm on page? It is a huge pain having to click on the thread, scroll to the end only to see a Hmm post (maybe) rather than clicking straight to the latest post.

Suddengeekgirl · 21/08/2014 08:11

I am really trying MNHQ. I am an addict and came back to MN this morning hoping 'fresh eyes' would help.

The screen is still giving me a headache

And it is SO SLOW! This page took 3 minutes to load!

On the upside my MN habit might be cured!

RubyGoat · 21/08/2014 08:13
  • The pictures are ridiculously small. Even when zoomed in to the max, they are too small to see properly on my 8 inch tablet screen (Samsung Galaxy, runs on Android). I did a screenshot last night.
- The 'go to page' function doesn't work, not on my device anyway. - It looks quite modern. However it's a bit stark! The white background will not be good for my migraines. - I get that you need advertising revenue. Can't we have the option to close an advert once we've seen it, like on other sites? - I don't like that if I go to a thread I've not seen before, I have to scroll down to the bottom of the screen, select 'last page', scroll down to the bottom, then start reading the posts, bottom up. Why cant we flip the threads anymore or where is this option hidden? - It's totally unusable on my mobile phone, also a Samsung. I get the security certificate warning literally every time I select a new thread or screen. The icons for the menus, facebook etc are just empty circles (top icons for MN menus) & the facebook icons etc are just coloured squares. - I quite like the ... things with the drop down menus for PM, report poster etc, they take up less room. However the effect of this has been totally negated by the changes to text size and/or spacing. - How do we hide threads or topics?
StandsOnGoldenSands · 21/08/2014 08:17

Back again. One other point MN. The way you've run this process has been appalling. Launch the changes at the end of the working day, let all the techies sod off home, not have any user's guide or how-to info available to help people find their way around, and then the one MN person on duty tells us we'll learn to love it ( sorry Dawn but that was really patronising and unhelpful while so many people were struggling to get to grips with the new site with no help or guidance or tech support).

Apols for spelling mistakes, am on the desktop site on my mobile which is really slow to type on but it's the only way I can access the site.

The absolute first thing that the techies should do when they get into work this morning is turn the old mobile site back on.
The second thing is for someone from MN to explaingto us what the problem were which this change was intending to fix. Because I think people would be more tolerant if they just understood WHY.

DrFunkesFamilyBandSolution · 21/08/2014 08:21

MNHQ; could you kindly update us on the Facebook page when we've got an option to change it back?
It's unusable for me (white background far too harsh, yes I have my phone set at the lowest brightness at all times anyhoo because I'm affected by the white light).

At least I won't be MN-ing for a while

Tinkerball · 21/08/2014 08:25

I had the desktop site customised to show all posts on a thread so I dont have to keep clicking through pages and pages - and its changed back - I cant remember how to change this back again?

NoisyOyster · 21/08/2014 08:25

Sorry mnhq I'm back to the desktop version on my mobile just to be able to write this Sad

Agree with pp's. Where is Tech? And why was this allowed to go live without him standing by? This isn't just a "Oooh it's new" type response, these are all major valid concerns

Disappointed.

TobyLerone · 21/08/2014 08:26

I find it really hard to believe that the beta testers didn't come up with exactly the same issues with the new site.

Did you just ignore them too, MNHQ?

OwlCapone · 21/08/2014 08:26

From another thread

We were fully intending to launch the new version much earlier in the day, but for various technical reasons this just wasn't possible. Holding back the new release wasn't an option either, so we've gone ahead and hope that you'll all bear with us for tonight.

We promise that our Tech folk will be on hand to talk us all through the new mobile site in the morning.

Again, we're really sorry for the inconvenience. flowers

Tinkerball · 21/08/2014 08:30

I think more will be needed than a simple "talk through".

FoxSticks · 21/08/2014 08:31

So I changed my browser to Chrome and it looks much much better. It's still taking an age to load long threads though which is a real problem.

Tinkerball · 21/08/2014 08:31

Even the desktop site is doing my head in now - I click "view all messages" and yes it shows them all and then you go to another thread and you have to keep doing it each time.
