Hands up everyone who wants to try out the BRAND NEW MUMSNET MOBILE SITE

RowanMumsnet · 20/08/2014 14:42

Hello comrades

As lots of you will know, we've been developing a brand new, souped up version of the Mumsnet mobile site for seven geological eras quite a long time now.

We can now exclusively reveal that the new mobile site is... TOTALLY AND UTTERLY ABOUT TO BE RELEASED, LIKE, ANY TIME NOW.

We've tested it on loads of MNers (Flowers to those who have helped out) but inevitably there will be glitches that only reveal themselves once tens of thousands of you dive in and start using it - so please use this thread to let us know about those (with the usual info about browsers and devices).

And if you like it, please pass along Cake and Wine to ShamTech, BrunoTech, JessicaMumsnet and all the other techs and MHQers who have been working their digits off on this.

The new improved apps are coming, honest... but in the meantime, if the old apps are driving you bonkers, do please take the new mobile site for a test drive.

I like it.
mrsVamos was right about the bookmarking. Please fix that.

The visible screen for reading is smaller and that defeats the purpose so can that be increased.

Loving the cleaner look.

Must go investigate more.

I used to do the beta testing in my previous job. Hated it.
I might have to take a break from mn until the kinks are ironed out.

TobyZiegler · 21/08/2014 06:34

Arf at all the drama llamas This change was tested with mners you know, but I guess those that sign up for beta testing tend to be early adopters, and not representative.

I think that's why we are all surprised. MN made changes before, useful ones. The 'MN have commented on this post, click here' for example and now it's gone!? That makes zero sense to me.

To those who this is affecting: the background on the PC site is also white - does that also trigger things? Serious question.

I think the problem lies in the fact because there is little else on the screen and the font is thinner with so much white space it makes the screen appear significantly brighter on a mobile device. Especially if you are MNing in dim or no light. For example on the old mobile site more posts would fit on the screen so there was less white, now you're lucky if you can fit 2 or 2 posts on the screen and the dominant view is a blanket of white.

What used to be a pleasant browsing experience is now a scrolling nightmare.

Janethegirl · 21/08/2014 06:40

On the PC you have a choice of how things are displayed. I use classic instead of the new look, maybe the solution is to offer a choice for mobiles Smile

prettywhiteguitar · 21/08/2014 06:41

And how do you highlight op posts ? Can't find the function in my account.

Agree on the amount of white space, woke up early due to pregnancy hormones going nuts so sat in the dark, being blinded :(

Perfectlypurple · 21/08/2014 06:45

The white is too bright
Too little text on screen
No 'mumsnet commented on the thread'
If I click on a thread in active it takes me to a thread several below which isn't in my eye line
Every thread that has more than 18 posts on it in threads im on has '18'. Whether it does or not
Adverts way too big
Only highlights the ops first post not subsequent ones.

The bookmark/report change I can live with.

Really want the option to go back.

Seriouslyffs · 21/08/2014 06:45

Apologies if this has already been answered, but I'm really struggling to navigate around the new app and have reverted to desk top on my iPhone.
Is there a simple way of going up and down and a flip feature?

StillStayingClassySanDiego · 21/08/2014 06:48

It's going to take some getting used toConfused. Will it be fine tuned so that customise will include more colours to highlight, as on desktop. It is harder to identify threads I've been on.

Cornettoninja · 21/08/2014 06:49

I'm really trying to like it but for me it's not quite there yet.

A little idiots guide to finding the new settings and stuff would probably go down well. I finally figured out how to highlight ops posts which is good.

I really, really hate having to scroll all the way to the bottom of the thread to see how many pages there are. I don't always use the bookmark and sometimes go straight to the last page to see if it's worth my while catching up. And I don't like having no shortcut to get back to the top either. If I click on a thread and give up half way through it's irritating to have to scroll for ages to be able to get off the page. I could use my back button but then I'd have to refresh to update the threads lists Confused

I'm not a fan of the font/colours. Truthfully I can't quite put my finger on why. It is very harsh and a bit too clean. Comparing it with the desktop site it superficially isn't all that different, but prolonged use highlights it for me. I also think the thread lists need work, it does seem a bit 'merging into one'. I think on phones separation needs more attention - maybe subtle highlighted backgrounds for alternate titles/posts?

I do like the new icon buttons - much easier to use Smile

Adverts? I get you have a business to run so I don't think they're awful, but I am weary of what comes up. I've had to stop using forums when the adverts they've chosen to display require so much bandwidth that pages stop loading start freezing... I know that hasn't happened here but I suppose I just wanted to plead the case of not getting carried away with your shiny new site and think displaying 30 sec ads is a good idea!

OwlCapone · 21/08/2014 06:52

It looks absolutely fine to me.

However, hidden threads show up on "Threads I'm on"

starsandunicorns · 21/08/2014 06:55

Im dislexic posted about unable to read the text words start jumping up and down it took me 4 trys to get to from one paragrah to another on my hudl i have tonned down the light but it still bad the veryy blue doesnt seprate like before
I tried to read some thread last night just couldnt even with it tonned down but in doing so i flick back to other websites (Ebay)etc as i cant see them

Did you ask you anyone of the testers if they were dislexic as this would of being hightlighted also straight away i even got out my coloured sheet last night to overlay on the screen ( surely you dont ecpect us to do that just to be part of the website ) plus i dont carry a mini version around with me ) just gave up i had a good nights sleep so not tried this morning ( which makes the words bounce arpund more ) but i really cant use this website its not a case of getting used to it

Cornettoninja · 21/08/2014 06:57

Oh and I forgot - when you add a post or click to the top (when you finally get there Wink) is it really necessary to have the whole 'whooshing' effect? Don't like that.

Along with the no links to the top and bottom of the page I don't feel I can put my settings to load more posts per page. I don't want to scroll through a 1000 posts to get off the page or watch them all zoom back up my screen to get to the board menu.

Lots of constructive criticism - but thank you for all of the hard work you're doing to try and make the site better. It sounds insincere after moaning but it doesn't just happen and the sentiment you're always trying to improve is appreciated!

OwlCapone · 21/08/2014 06:58

If you find the white glares, turn the brightness of your phone down. Saves battery too. Mine is about 75% and all looks good.

starsandunicorns · 21/08/2014 06:59

Toby
On my.laptop the background is off white so can read stuff as the layout there helps with reading but putting bright white and this text change its really bad

OwlCapone · 21/08/2014 07:02

It seems deleted threads also show up in Threads I'm On. When you click on them, you get a post message box and nothing else.

Tinkerball · 21/08/2014 07:03

Cornettoninja, how have you managed to highlights all the OPs posts in a thread? So far I've only managed to get the first one highlighted a very pale grey?

starsandunicorns · 21/08/2014 07:05

Owl i do that anyway on my phone for battery put its still hard to read the lines around stuff are so thin and the grey so faint i cant see them so posts dont look like they are seprate

SweetPeaPods · 21/08/2014 07:06

I've just clicked on my mumsnet and got an error message. Anyone else ?

meglet · 21/08/2014 07:06

I've come back for a second round of moaning.

  • when I open a looong thread (such as this one) I have to scroll to the bottom of the first page to use the 'next' or 'last' page buttons. I don't need to be whizzing past that first page every time.
  • threads I'm on. All I see now is the title and number of posts. Previously I saw a summary of the last few posts after mine (max 18 IIRC). Just seeing the thread title doesn't help, I need to know whether the thread has pootled along nicely or descended into a bunfight, I don't want to have to go back into it to check.
WilburIsSomePig · 21/08/2014 07:08

I'll only use my laptop when I'm at home from now on, I can't bear the new mobile layout. It's a shame because I travel by train a lot and always use my phone, it'll just have to be buzzfeed to make my journeys go quicker from now on!

SweetPeaPods · 21/08/2014 07:08

Ok it's now coming up with
'500 internal server error'
When I try to log in

Gileswithachainsaw · 21/08/2014 07:11

They aren't listening are they
Sad

All this talk of getting used to it and ironing out creases. It's not about change, we could deal
With change. But they have taken something that was easy and worked fine and given us this crap.

Change back. Why can't you fell is if you can change back?

Why ask us what we think if your not going to change it accordingly?

EhricLovesTheBhrothers · 21/08/2014 07:16

Another crap change to threads I'm on - you used to be able to tap on the actual page (aibu, chat etc) from each thread. Ie the list of threads would have 'chat' (clickable link) 'thread title' (clickable link) 'last few posts' (clickable) now you just have thread title. I liked being able to jump straight to a page such as aibu from the TIO page. This way you have to click a thread, whizz to the top then click on the page.

PinkSquash · 21/08/2014 07:16

I've only logged onto Mumsnet this morning. 20 mins to read 4 pages of this thread and my battery has been killed by it. It must be the constant scrolling to read anything.

My eyes are aching too, which isn't helpful

LoxleyBarrett · 21/08/2014 07:17

I'm sorry but I will never grow to love having a migraine. The reduced functionality is rubbish too.

Using an iphone:

  • can't highlight OP - customise doesn't work
  • watching doesn't work - it doesn't show the last 18 posts so you can skip to the one you want to read
  • it is slow, very slow and often doesn't respond
  • the glare, font and advert gave me a terrible migraine last night
  • bookmark doesn't work - it takes you back to the top
  • there is no "top" option

Why should we learn to love an inferior product? Or is the plan to charge us for something that actually works?

LoxleyBarrett · 21/08/2014 07:19

Typing the last message used 12% of my battery life too.

Back to desktop for now...
