Hands up everyone who wants to try out the BRAND NEW MUMSNET MOBILE SITE

RowanMumsnet · 20/08/2014 14:42

Hello comrades

As lots of you will know, we've been developing a brand new, souped up version of the Mumsnet mobile site for seven geological eras quite a long time now.

We can now exclusively reveal that the new mobile site is... TOTALLY AND UTTERLY ABOUT TO BE RELEASED, LIKE, ANY TIME NOW.

We've tested it on loads of MNers (Flowers to those who have helped out) but inevitably there will be glitches that only reveal themselves once tens of thousands of you dive in and start using it - so please use this thread to let us know about those (with the usual info about browsers and devices).

And if you like it, please pass along Cake and Wine to ShamTech, BrunoTech, JessicaMumsnet and all the other techs and MHQers who have been working their digits off on this.

The new improved apps are coming, honest... but in the meantime, if the old apps are driving you bonkers, do please take the new mobile site for a test drive.

Kate Thanks

I don't have dyslexia and I am straining to read the text. There's something about the font or size that is making it really hard to read.

It's triggering migraines, epilepsy symptoms and is very difficult for those with dyslexia to read but the best you can offer is 'we'll get used to it?'

Sorry, I'm sure a lot of work has gone into this and presumably some expense but come on.

Dontwanttobeyourmonkeywench · 21/08/2014 00:13

Hate the glare. Hate the layout. Hate tbe permanent toolbar at the bottom. Hate the ad banner at the top. In fact the toolbar and ad banner take up so much space that I can hardly read anything without scrolling forever. The mobile site is what keeps me going during the long wait for kids activities to end because the android mobile app was shite with a capital S. Hate it so much that I'll won't be using it.
P.S I now have a headache induced by the glare in tbe length of time it took me to type this (with the settings adjusted on my phone)

MrsToddsShortcut · 21/08/2014 00:19

Hi MNHQ,

I think there are lots of functionality issues that need to be addressed and hopefully can be resolved.

but...

The issue with the white background glare is actually really serious. It's triggering migraines, epilepsy and causing huge problems for those with dyslexia.

It's also causing more general problems - I've got reasonable eyesight but I've developed a headache while trying to read the new site. It's really not good.

If you only initially address one issue, please make it this one - I'm certain the last thing you'd want from your new site is to make people ill!

hashtagwhatever · 21/08/2014 00:25

I can't even switch to desktop as that made the writing really tiny on my mobile phone. If this stays I don't think I will be using mumsnet anymore.

I didn't see anything about this being tested either. When was it tested out?

Patilla · 21/08/2014 00:27

Ok just like trying to hide the shortcuts bar, I clicked on the "highlight op posts" and it hasn't worked. Which is quite frustrating.

As frustrating as not going to the end of a thread you've posted on.

And I miss that on the "threads I'm on" I can't see a summary of posts since I posted. That was really handy to see if it was worth looking at yet or was just a raft of place marking posts. Please bring it back and I promise not to sulk.

Will continue to test it out but got to stop due to glare, even on lowest brightness.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 21/08/2014 00:28

Arf at all the drama llamas Grin

This change was tested with mners you know, but I guess those that sign up for beta testing tend to be early adopters, and not representative.

A bug bearr I had with the old version and this one is with images. You should be able to click them to load up the high-res original. If you click now, you get a bigger image (rather randomly at the bottom) but it is just a larger version of the low resolution image, as opposed to the high resolution image.

DHandhisgrossfoot · 21/08/2014 00:28

*Dawn, it's not a matter of getting used to something new, for me. I find it almost unworkable.

Please give us the option of 'mobile classic'.

It's not relaxing anymore. It's not easy.
...*

^ THIS

Pretty please.

FuckTheMagicDragon · 21/08/2014 00:31

I'm sorry - but it's awful :( for all the reasons posted above. Pull it, fix the navigation, give more screen space to the posts and less to the white space and ads. The menu is quite good, but maybe make it hide unless the screen is being touched.

I've gone to the full site, mainly due to the navigation.

PlinkingViolet · 21/08/2014 00:38

Missing 'go to top' a lot.

Dont like not being able to see if there are new posts on thread im on / watching.

Really cant see any plusses so far, sorry.

Tinkerball · 21/08/2014 00:41

I don't think finding something very difficult to actually use is being a "drama llama" actually. For exams the lack of being able to see the OPs posts and the jumping to top of screen when you click bookmark - 2 very simple but effective ways if reading threads properly.

Tinkerball · 21/08/2014 00:42

And I can't believe that these issues weren't highlighted when it was tested.

PlinkingViolet · 21/08/2014 00:48

Also bad that username isnt displayed on reply box.

Pipbin · 21/08/2014 01:01

I actually quite like it.

But I have a comment. When I go to threads I'm on it takes me to the beginning of the thread when I click on it. I can't see the first line or so on the most recent posts, I liked that.

trice · 21/08/2014 01:13

It is too white.
The glare is hurting my eyes.
The font is hard to read.
TIO is less user friendly.
There are only a few lines displayed on the screen meaning I have to constantly scroll.
I quite like the blue bar.

StairsInTheNight · 21/08/2014 02:45

I have it, have switched to desktop site as its easier on the eyes, but text etc is now very small.

I can't highlight all the op's posts, it doesn't work. I don't like the giant advert. The white screen is unpleasant.

I really liked the mobile site before, what problems were you trying to resolve?

StairsInTheNight · 21/08/2014 02:46

Hate not have.

Dayshiftdoris · 21/08/2014 02:55

Not dyslexic, epileptic nor a migraine sufferer...

However I struggled to read the new mobile site and started to feel nauseous...

The font is thin and ?lighter black or the glare on the background is too much.

When iPhone iOS 7 came out users complained of the same thing and apple released details of adjustments to their accessibility settings which helped those affected...

Where are your accessibility settings MN?

pebbble · 21/08/2014 03:31

I really like it - I browse pages in inverted colours as the bright screen sets off migranes for me and it looks really good, like the font and where buttons are for replying etc is far more inuitive. The only thing I'd flag is that the highlight OP option in customize doesn't change anything. Also I liked links changing to a different colour once clicked so I could tell what threads I had and hadnt viewed, this no longer happens.

FastWindow · 21/08/2014 03:40

Horrible. Argh. Too bright. Have said so on about four threads, so hard to read. Where is the report button!!

OrangeMochaFrappucino · 21/08/2014 03:59

I love MN for company during night feeds - screen now too harsh and glare-y for this time of night.

Just repeating my point about the social share buttons - if there is no option to hide them, I won't use the site anymore at all.

TinkerbellTrains · 21/08/2014 03:59

I haven't read the whole thread, mainly because I can only see one and a half posts on my screen at a time and the scrolling keeps freezing my phone but

It's crap!

WeAreEternal · 21/08/2014 04:28

Please tell me it's not going to stay this slow?

When trying to load this page to post this I waited 7 minutes for it to load, it wouldn't jump to my bookmarked spot so I started trying to scroll but it wouldn't let me, the page kept freezing, it also wouldn't let me open the post tabs to jump to the reply box. After 7 mint yes I refreshed, it was still the same, and still loading after another 5 minutes so I have now switched to the desktop site, which took a couple of seconds to load.

I HATE that the top/report/reply/bookmark buttons are now in that stupid tab thing, it doesn't upend properly, if you click on it it opens after a few reconsider but then closes again almost instantly.
Plus when you can actually get it open the buttons don't actually work, they all just take you to the top of the page.

I HATE that you can no longer highlight the OPs 1st post and their replies.

I HATE that stupid constant advert at the top of the page,
It's like being on a crappy free app.
It has just been one for O2, it's bright blue and extremely annoying, it distracts from the whole page constantly.
What was wrong with having fixed ads at the top and bottom of pages?
Or is it that companies pay more if people are forced to look at the ads constantly by having them scroll with the page and always on their screen?
It's tacky and I hate it.

MultipleMama · 21/08/2014 05:17

Also, I just noticed that threads a hid days ago before the layout change are now showing back up on my TI0! Why?! Why do you gotta mess? Can't you just change what needs fixing without changing the whole thing and making it worse?!

It's not too bad and I suppose no forum members like change really! I would like the page number buttons to be at the top of a post instead of the bottom.

One thing that is horrendous are the adverts. Was just reading the hyperemesis support thread and your advertising the cookbook with pictures of cakes all along the top of my screen. If makes me feel seriously sick. Sad
