Hands up everyone who wants to try out the BRAND NEW MUMSNET MOBILE SITE

RowanMumsnet · 20/08/2014 14:42

Hello comrades

As lots of you will know, we've been developing a brand new, souped up version of the Mumsnet mobile site for seven geological eras quite a long time now.

We can now exclusively reveal that the new mobile site is... TOTALLY AND UTTERLY ABOUT TO BE RELEASED, LIKE, ANY TIME NOW.

We've tested it on loads of MNers (Flowers to those who have helped out) but inevitably there will be glitches that only reveal themselves once tens of thousands of you dive in and start using it - so please use this thread to let us know about those (with the usual info about browsers and devices).

And if you like it, please pass along Cake and Wine to ShamTech, BrunoTech, JessicaMumsnet and all the other techs and MHQers who have been working their digits off on this.

The new improved apps are coming, honest... but in the meantime, if the old apps are driving you bonkers, do please take the new mobile site for a test drive.

Having said I didn't mind the new look I am going to have to say that my eyes are now killing me so something has definitely changed, I assume it's the white background and thinner font.

Patilla · 20/08/2014 22:40

Ok it seems to be a clearly articulated opinion that the lack of useable screen size has shrunk to an unworkable size and that's my
Main point.

I don't like the shortcuts bar but when I hide it I can't see how to do those things so the phrase shortcuts bar seems a little disingenuous and should instead be named "bar-to-do-anything-you'll-actually-want-to-do-with-a-but-at-the-sacrifice-of-actually-being-able-to-read-the-thread". Ill admit it's less catchy though.

I can't find a way to make my posts and the OP's posts be highlighted a different colour. I find this an incredibly important function as my brains wired a bit weirdly speshul and I struggle to scan threads without this kind of helpful structure.

I think the main thing is it feels a bit like you've taken away our tools and the ability to scan threads easily. It all feels a bit basic.

Sherborne · 20/08/2014 22:40

Repeated posts are because of random overlays or errors (like "permission denied" ) when posting.

I'm assuming the overlays are supposed to say "posted sucessfully" but thy don't show properly.

When you click post, you just have to trust that it's worked.

SwedishEdith · 20/08/2014 22:41

Have to switch to desktop to post. Maybe MNHQ could explain why they have changed the mobile site? It worked. What, exactly, was wrong with it before?

To be constructive...

  • the glare is awful (and it's not something I've ever noticed I suffer from before)
  • I can get rid of the blue bar = good. But there is then no obvious link to Active Conversations = bad. I have to search for it
  • can't see names and beginnings of posts on Threads I'm On = essential to see whether you can be bothered to read it again.
  • can't see a flip button
  • can't see back to Top button
  • the ad is disproportionately large and intrusive.
  • the text is too big. I have to scroll all the time to read stuff (and I expect it's readable to people sitting nearby as well - I don't mn in public anyway but I certainly wouldn't now)
  • it looks a bit cheap.
SnakeyMcBadass · 20/08/2014 22:42

I'm getting used to it. I'm on android galaxy s4. I've got the OPs highlighted as well as my own posts, which I like. The thing I'm really missing is the ability to skip pages at the top, as well as being able to return to the top with each post. A lot more scrolling as it is at the moment. I'd also favour having the start of replies on TIO again, as just the number doesn't tell me much as to whether the thread has moved on significantly.

EdwiniasRevenge · 20/08/2014 22:42

I quite like it on the whole.

The thing I'm struggling with is that on the old site I used to be able to use the link on the most recent posters name to go straight to that post (from TIA). now because there is no preview of the newer posts I can only click on the thread title which automatically takes you to the start of the thread.

It may be that I am missing something in the settings though.

Glastogirl · 20/08/2014 22:42

Apologies if this has asked and responded to but the app is so useless now and hard to navigate I can't read anyone's replies easily.

Is there an option to change it back? Surely the number of people saying they don't like it is enough to at least give us the option to have it how we want it? Hmm

EmmaGellerGreen · 20/08/2014 22:43

It's bloody awful. Looks horrid and so "clunky" to use. Is this really staying?

magpieC · 20/08/2014 22:47

What a lot of others have said...

There's two much white
Not enough content on the screen
Text is too big/more spaced.
It looks like an app - I don't want an app, I liked the fact it looked like a real site (and if I did want an app I'd use that rather than a mobile site)

If it's a long thread I like skimming through posts - there's so much scrolling now as there's so little data in a "view" it's a pain in the arse.

Have resorted to the laptop to read this and respond.

slightlyglitterstained · 20/08/2014 22:49

Also have a blue bar that doesn't stick to the bottom of the screen.

According to detectmobilebrowsers.com/mobile my browser is as follows:

Mozilla/5.0 (Linux; U; Android 2.3.5; en-gb; HTC_DesireHD Build/GRJ90) AppleWebKit/533.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile Safari/533.1

So, admittedly a bit on the ancient side, but then suspect a lot of MNers may not have the newest & shiniest. Let's see if this multi-posts for me now...

DawnMumsnet · 20/08/2014 22:52

Evening all,

We just wanted to apologise again to everyone who's having trouble with the mobile site tonight - we're making notes, and will do everything we can to make sure all your gripes are answered tomorrow, so please just hang on in there.

We're completely sure that in time we'll all grow to love the new version.

And on the plus side, the 'Post message 3 times in a row for no apparent reason' button seems to be working just fine. Wink

EmmaGellerGreen · 20/08/2014 22:52

But if you just switch to the desktop site, all is well.

TeenyfTroon · 20/08/2014 22:53

It's SO frustrating to only see a post and a half on the screen. I just cba to read anything lengthy. Can't face trawling through this thread for the info I need.
And that advert at the top is infuriating. And I'm usually a calm person. Who did you test this on? Surely all these points must have come up?
And God help the dyslexic among us...

DiscoDancer · 20/08/2014 22:54

My app hasn't changed at all. Am I missing something? thicko hat on today

member · 20/08/2014 22:55

I missed the advance notice and thought we were still in glitch land when I picked my kindle fire HD up once in bed!

My immediate thoughts are the screen is too bright with the white background. I have my brightness set on minimum yet the glare feels like it's burrowing into my brain & is uncomfortable.

Preferred having clearer demarcation between threads/posts.

Lweji · 20/08/2014 22:56

There is one thing I like now. :)

It seems that I can't press the Desktop version button by mistake. Hehey!

No we won't - grow to love it, I mean. Not when reading stuff is such an effort.
Ah well, where's my book? Or the Hoover

sunbathe · 20/08/2014 22:57

Had password issues, so I've been away for a little while.

Now I'm back, I can't stand the glare. When people were saying about it before, I couldn't see a problem. Now, my eyes are stinging and my head's starting to hurt.

I cannot grow to love this version. Please give us the old option back.

crispandfruity · 20/08/2014 22:58

Yes, there's something about the background / text resolution that is visually really uncomfortable.

In answer to a previous pp the desktop version is unreadable on my windows phone.

mrssmith79 · 20/08/2014 22:58

Hope mnhq are taking copious notes.
A few gripes from me but mostly:
Why only put the first \ previous \ next \ last buttons at the bottom of the page??
No option to view all replies unless I do it through customise therefore having it happen on EVERY thread I open.
No longer a colour differentiation for threads I've already read. V.annoying.
Soooooooo slow to load pages.

Other than that, seems OK.

Lweji · 20/08/2014 22:59

But... although I chose to highlight OP's posts, it doesn't seem to. Only my posts.

And yes, the letters/text is too big and I liked separation between posts.
And the blue bar doesn't move, but if we press the little down arrow, it sort of sticks to the bottom of the new text and the thread shows up down from it.
