Hands up everyone who wants to try out the BRAND NEW MUMSNET MOBILE SITE

RowanMumsnet · 20/08/2014 14:42

Hello comrades

As lots of you will know, we've been developing a brand new, souped up version of the Mumsnet mobile site for seven geological eras quite a long time now.

We can now exclusively reveal that the new mobile site is... TOTALLY AND UTTERLY ABOUT TO BE RELEASED, LIKE, ANY TIME NOW.

We've tested it on loads of MNers (Flowers to those who have helped out) but inevitably there will be glitches that only reveal themselves once tens of thousands of you dive in and start using it - so please use this thread to let us know about those (with the usual info about browsers and devices).

And if you like it, please pass along Cake and Wine to ShamTech, BrunoTech, JessicaMumsnet and all the other techs and MHQers who have been working their digits off on this.

The new improved apps are coming, honest... but in the meantime, if the old apps are driving you bonkers, do please take the new mobile site for a test drive.

Is the number after a thread in TIO the number of new unread posts? If so, why does it cap at 18, is that intentional? Have I just rumbled some secret service code Shock

ilovesooty · 20/08/2014 23:05

We're completely sure that in time we'll all grow to love the new version

That sounds pretty dismissive tome.

And this approach killed the TES site. People got fed up with the persistent emphasis on changing a site which didn't need changing. People were told they'd grow to love it.

People left in their droves.

Wailywailywaily · 20/08/2014 23:06

Its always done that Edu

maxmissie · 20/08/2014 23:07

Sadly do not like the new format!

Main gripes:

  • not being able to show all messages. Don't want to have to click through 25 pages when before I could read them all in one go.
  • far too much white on the screen
  • difficult to distinguish between posts
  • can only read one post at a time due to ad and bar taking up most of the page space so have to scroll down very very slowly and carefully rather than a quick skim over posts
  • fiddly links to bookmark, customise etc.
slightlyglitterstained · 20/08/2014 23:08

Lost post.

The "post multiple times" might be due to the busy indicator overlay (the transparent grey layer with rotating circle of little dots) only appearing at the top - so off screen when you're actually writing/submitting a post.

My theory is that it's due to the wandering blue bar - i.e. overlay is tied to that, hence why it's not appearing correctly, but your devs/testers will be able to figure that one out.

My browser details:
Mozilla/5.0 (Linux; U; Android 2.3.5; en-gb; HTC_DesireHD Build/GRJ90) AppleWebKit/533.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile Safari/533.1

springbabydays · 20/08/2014 23:08

Those who learn to love it will stay. The rest of us will find other things to do Sad

Dawn I know I have said this before but , no one will " grow to love" the white glare it is painful, really it is annoying it isn't something to get used to it actually makes the site unviewable, if you change one thing please do that. ( also agree with the other problems mentioned) thanks

ophiotaurus · 20/08/2014 23:09

I know it's irrational but I am so pissed off with this change.
The layout is terrible.
You can see ads the whole time.
Why can't you highlight original poster?
The Facebook links are back. Can they be turned off? I don't want this to accidentally link to my fb.
You can't differentiate between posters and text.

I am really unhappy about this.
I will not be using it as it stands and will have to use desktop version at night as I refuse to use this.

It's terrible.

Why did it need changing?

It has completely rid the site of it's identity.

Looks like any other site now.

Awful, just awful.

Romeyroo · 20/08/2014 23:10

Just to reiterate the point about the glare. I have just come back (hopeful that I imagined this all earlier this evening) and it is literally hurting my head and making me feel sick.
If you sort nothing else, please, please sort that.

SwedishEdith · 20/08/2014 23:14

No, I don't like that tone either. Sounds like you're not going to listen at all - god, it feels like being in work. If you could explain why you've changed it, that would be a start.

I agree with this.
It's very much a pat on the head.
"There there now, stop being silly, of course you will like it".

misskelly · 20/08/2014 23:17

Are there any other Dyslexics having problems reading the page? I think its the white back ground, dyslexics usally can read better from a coloured backgorund or one thats broken up a bit. Plus, the colour of the text is weird, I could only focus for 5min before I had to give up.

ophiotaurus · 20/08/2014 23:17

bold fail

GiantGraspingCeramicFist · 20/08/2014 23:17

I'm not particularly susceptible to glare and even I find it painful.

stupidgreatgrinonmyface · 20/08/2014 23:17

It has taken over 20 minutes to scroll from the top of the thread to the bottom. Previously, it would have taken a couple of minutes at the most. Quite apart from the fact that even threads I have bookmarked only seem to load the entire thread, from the beginning, rather than the bookmarked post. All in all, in the space of a few moments, MN has gone from being my most visited site on my mobile (HTC One M8) to being one I will no longer bother with until and unless I can get to a pc or laptop. I have already deleted MN from my favourites. Shame. This was such a user friendly site on mobile devices. SadSad

LittleBearPad · 20/08/2014 23:18

The glare is terrible. I have turned the brightness on my phone right down but then I have to turn it up for other websites. Very annoying.

ophiotaurus · 20/08/2014 23:19

The font is very spindly.

What was wrong with the old site?

I didn't see anyone complaining about it?

Patilla · 20/08/2014 23:22

Just to add, when I try to get up "my mumsnet" via the mobile site I get an error message.
VelocityViewServlet : Error processing a template for path '/member/Page'
And then a whole load of text that looks like a written version of what it sounds like in my head when someone tried to explain anything about computers to me.

ophiotaurus · 20/08/2014 23:22

I'm really angry about this actually.

I'm sure people will think I'm a saddo but I don't care.

The site is unusable now. Too bright. Not nice to read.

I used to dip in and out of here all day, when waiting for kids at groups, pick up from school etc.

It's HORRIBLE.

PLEASE CHANGE IT BACK.

cakedays · 20/08/2014 23:26

Agh. No I won't grow to love it at all. Might well be the kick I needed to break my MN addiction, but I didn't really want it broken Hmm

I'm going to try to stop posting now as I'm so annoyed, but WHY for the love of god take a format with functionality everyone liked, then make it more difficult and annoying to use? There are now quite a lot of features that used to be accessed with one tap or click which now require two (eg. going to top of page - which I used constantly - now you have to tap twice rather than once and it's slower). Ditto not having the post jump bar at the top as well - I can't bear all this repeated scrolling just to get to the bottom of the page to jump to the last page of the thread. And if I want to watch a thread I have to click twice not once as before. The different things are all over the screen - some in the bottom bar, some in drop-down menus and icons - fussy and confused.

Pretty much all IT bods agree that when you update a format you try to make existing functionality simpler and more intuitive, and reduce the steps between different actions, not increase them. Please, please don't dismiss MNetters' concerns about this. It isn't a good update if things you do all the time on a site and that are part of its basic functionality become more complicated. Why take actions that used to take one tap and make them so you have to tap twice instead for the same thing? It massively slows down how you use the site and makes the reading experience slow and very cumbersome. Agh :(

Patilla · 20/08/2014 23:27

Oh yes - and the glare.

I have to say that I thought the latest updates to iplayer on my Samsung tv ranked as my least favourite upgrades but you're giving them a run for their money, bless you.

I'm not jumping ship yet because that presumes I've got an alternative distraction available from housework as im confident that you lovely people at MNHQ do want to deliver a great product but I do think it might not have been the highlight in my time on mumsnet.

Possibly the old school report summary "could do better" may apply to the upgrade. As ever, the content itself makes up for it.

We believe in you still MNHQ.

Tapirbackrider · 20/08/2014 23:27

I've tried using the new layout 3 times tonight - each time I've had an epilepsy aura triggered.

Won't be using it.

MultipleMama · 20/08/2014 23:27

Agree with others, dawn. This sounds like a "like it or lump it" situations. Maybe you'll take notes but it already sounds like you're not going to listen or change anything.

I won't grow to love it. I find it horrible. When facebook changed; I left. I won't be leaving here due to the amazing advice and support from people but I will no longer using it on my phone. It's awful. MN has lost it's identity.

There was nothing wrong with mobile site, why change it? The app not the mobile site is what needed changing.

fairyfuckwings · 20/08/2014 23:28

Yeah I'm another one not impressed. I used it when I had a few spare minutes but I don't think I'll be going that anymore. .
