Hands up everyone who wants to try out the BRAND NEW MUMSNET MOBILE SITE

Hello comrades

As lots of you will know, we've been developing a brand new, souped up version of the Mumsnet mobile site for seven geological eras quite a long time now.

We can now exclusively reveal that the new mobile site is... TOTALLY AND UTTERLY ABOUT TO BE RELEASED, LIKE, ANY TIME NOW.

We've tested it on loads of MNers (Flowers to those who have helped out) but inevitably there will be glitches that only reveal themselves once tens of thousands of you dive in and start using it - so please use this thread to let us know about those (with the usual info about browsers and devices).

And if you like it, please pass along Cake and Wine to ShamTech, BrunoTech, JessicaMumsnet and all the other techs and MHQers who have been working their digits off on this.

The new improved apps are coming, honest... but in the meantime, if the old apps are driving you bonkers, do please take the new mobile site for a test drive.

Reading these comments it must be appearing quite differently on different phones/browsers. My blue bar behaves itself and stays fixed to the bottom of the screen when I scroll. Also I am not having any slow-loading issues, if anything it seems faster.

It's a pain flicking between pages/boards./threads though, seems to involve a lot more long-winded clicking.

angeltulips · 20/08/2014 22:04

Like the new layout, it's nice and clean. (But I only use my phone as I loathe the desktop site so may be an outlier.)

But where have the go to/show all/flip etc buttons at the top of threads gone? Tis v annoying to constantly be taken to page 1

Cocolepew · 20/08/2014 22:04

I thought it was the app that needed an overhaul , there was never anything wrong with the mobile site

Trills · 20/08/2014 22:05

Nexus 5, Chrome.

I miss my "top" and "reply" buttons on each post.

It took me a very long time to get to the end of the page here- I gestured to scroll down to the "bottom", but it wasn't really the bottom of the page, and I had no way of knowing how much further I had to go. The last 30 or so posts only loaded a few at I time so I had to keep scrolling.

Then some page about "what's your sharing style" or something (a Mumsnet page but not a talk one) opened itself up 6 times in 6 new tabs.

Then it was very difficult to get myself into the "post" box.

I would rather use the desktop site at this time

Lweji · 20/08/2014 22:07

I sort of like it and I'm sure I'll get used to it, but:

  • it's not too obvious what the icons on the top right are for
  • I miss having the beginning of a few posts on Threads I'm On, as it helps seeing how the threads are moving to decide which one to check.

I think there was something else, but forgot it.

gingerdodger · 20/08/2014 22:08

It's awful.

I can't see the posts that have appeared since I last looked on threads I am on or ones I am watching.

It hurts my eyes and I can't work out how to highlight mine or OP posts. Will be giving it a miss for a while I think. I thought the old mobile site was great.

BlackDaisies · 20/08/2014 22:08

I don't like it at all. I thought it was another glitch like the other day. Have now switched to desktop site, but that's too difficult to read.

I guess it may cure me of my terrible addiction though, as for the first time in weeks I'm about to turn my phone off and watch a bit of tv instead.

The main things I can't cope with is the white glare with all the plain text. The flying blue box which keeps sticking in the middle of the screen. The way the posts all merge into one (just like the glitch the other day). Unfortunately the desktop site's not an option really on my phone. I did keep thinking I should get off the site more, so I think I've just been given the kick start I needed. Sad though.

GiantGraspingCeramicFist · 20/08/2014 22:09

Yes, I meant to say that I am not having blue bar issues - it stays at the bottom - and loading times are fine.

Moto G/Chrome.

Another post to add to what everyone else has said - this is awful :( The old mobile site was great, very readable, easy on the eye (esp the separation between blue post header and post text, and the look of each board) - I used to use the mobile site in preference to the desktop. But now it looks busy, distracting, difficult to read, and as pp have mentioned, TIO and TIW are completely unusable; I can't find half the functionality (how do you watch a thread?) and the option to switch usernames has disappeared. The ad at the top is VERY VERY ANNOYING INDEED. From being one of the most readable and pleasant to use mobile sites I read, it's instantly jumped to worst! Please restore an option to use the old format. I don't think I'd bother using MN in this format. On the plus side, as a pp said, I'll get a lot more done in RL.

IrenetheQuaint · 20/08/2014 22:12

The lack of a 'see whole thread' option is a real problem if like me you use the mobile site on trains etc with intermittent reception. I used to download whole long threads which I could then read through without worrying about whether my phone had a data connection or not. That is no longer possible and it's a big loss.

i am so disappointed. and feel mumsnet has ruined for meSad

Wailywailywaily · 20/08/2014 22:15

I like it. It has taken me all of 5 mins to get the hang of.

IQ of 180 here [preens]

nickelbabe · 20/08/2014 22:16

fuck it.
I give up.

I can't post my sccreenshots and I'm fucked off with thw navigation.

I could have had a relaxing evening mning and an early night with my family, but I've been made to feel annoyed and now I'm super annoyed at fidgety and scratchy dd who is only doing what she does.

Wailywailywaily · 20/08/2014 22:16

Oh except I hate the adbar at the to of my screen, how do I get rid of that?

cakedays · 20/08/2014 22:16

And a final point - I still have a few pages in the old format open in Safari and was just looking at the difference between them and the new format, to compare. Really, MN, the new format just looks CHEAP. It looks like a cut-price generic version of what was a really elegant mobile site layout before. The massive ugly advert is the main thing that makes it look cheap, but the generic ugly-looking layout also looks cheap too. There's no elegance about the look of this and the old one was so neat and functional and visually nice! :( Why why why why why.... :( :( :(

Pictures are tiny, if I zoom in enough to see them, the ad at the top, & the blue bar at the bottom get so big they obscure a fair part of the screen.

Oh fuck, that would be hilarious if it weren't so ridiculous. Nexus 5, Chrome - blue bar sits still most of the time, but try to zoom in to see a picture, and the picture barely enlarges, whilst the top ad and the blue bar swell up and meet in the middle. Genius.

TeWiSavesTheDay · 20/08/2014 22:20

I generally like it: I'm on my phone, android, chrome

Not rtft but customize us not working for me, it's showing 'highlight OPs posts' as ticked but they aren't highlighted, also when I tick show SN and press the confirm changes button (or whatever it's called!) it refreshes the page and unticks the box.

Also on threads I'm on the how many posts since you last posted doesn't seem to work, appears to stop at 18 even if more people have posted since you last read.

It's a bit annoying that after you bookmark the page scrolls back up to the top.

LotsaTuddles · 20/08/2014 22:21

The blue bar at the bottom disappears when I click on a thread, I can't get back to active convos.

Am I doing something wrong?

MultipleMama · 20/08/2014 22:21

Where are the Techies?! Is what I'd like to know. The day of the switch and there's no-one to answer questions only someone to point us to the official thread. Bad planning, if you ask me.

I hate it but I could tolerate it if the TIO shows recent posts and I could hide threads!

LapsedTwentysomething · 20/08/2014 22:22

It's shit. I've been posting on AIBU to explain why, and can't be bothered with the hassle of rewriting now that the C&P function doesn't work. Can't use it like this.

Sherborne · 20/08/2014 22:22

Whitespace :annoying and painful for extended periods
Fixed width : still can't zoom to make the text bigger and wrap the screen
Zoom: just makes the blue bar and advert cover the page
Last page btn: right at the bottom, so have to scroll all the way down pg1 first to get to the last page
Blue bar: at least let us turn it off if you're going to keep the permanent ad.

On the plus side, I can live with the ellipses menu (as long as you add a top button)

I think the biggest usability issue is that mn is all about reading large amounts of frequently updated text and posting small amounts of text (relative to thread size). Anything that detracts from those two "user journeys" is going to be taken badly.

Trills · 20/08/2014 22:23

Look the page is very nearly fully loaded, but not yet, and it sticks at "very nearly finished loading" for ages.

The number of new posts on Threads I'm On is quite nice.

I don't mind the look, don't mind the blue bar.

Would prefer to have an x to get rid of the advert.

Tapping on a thread from Threads I'm On took me to the top of the thread, not to my most recent post.
