Hands up everyone who wants to try out the BRAND NEW MUMSNET MOBILE SITE

RowanMumsnet · 20/08/2014 14:42

Hello comrades

As lots of you will know, we've been developing a brand new, souped up version of the Mumsnet mobile site for seven geological eras quite a long time now.

We can now exclusively reveal that the new mobile site is... TOTALLY AND UTTERLY ABOUT TO BE RELEASED, LIKE, ANY TIME NOW.

We've tested it on loads of MNers (Flowers to those who have helped out) but inevitably there will be glitches that only reveal themselves once tens of thousands of you dive in and start using it - so please use this thread to let us know about those (with the usual info about browsers and devices).

And if you like it, please pass along Cake and Wine to ShamTech, BrunoTech, JessicaMumsnet and all the other techs and MHQers who have been working their digits off on this.

The new improved apps are coming, honest... but in the meantime, if the old apps are driving you bonkers, do please take the new mobile site for a test drive.

Ok Dawn
But what about the issue of threads I'm on being completely different ruined ? That's not a technical glitch, it's a change for the worse. Can that be changed to include the last few posts as it used to?

MultipleMama · 20/08/2014 20:53

How do I hide threads on the stupid layout?!!

I tried hiding via desktop but when I came back to the mobile layout the threads were still there!!!

FishWithABicycle · 20/08/2014 20:53

Um, am I doing it wrong? I'm not seeing anything different.

Using the standard internet explorer on a Nokia windows smartphone. Using url m.mumsnet.com/talk etc. It is showing me basically the desktop site though. None of the features that you lot are describing.

SoonToBeSix · 20/08/2014 20:55

Dawn the problem with getting to know it isn't the getting used to change, minor glitches etc. the problem is the white is physically painful to people's eyes the glare is terrible it causes headaches. Why would people want that. Also very difficult to use if you have dyslexia please please please just fix the bright white! Thank you

CorporateRockWhore · 20/08/2014 20:58

I had to stop using MN on my Nokia because of the stupid social plugins in the left hand bar.

Now I'll have to stop using it on my iphone because this layout is a complete f'ing shambles.

You need a UX person. Or a new UX person. Or a developer with, you know, eyes, so that they can see that what they're doing is shite.

TobyZiegler · 20/08/2014 20:59

Sorry DawnMN I really can't. It genuinely isn't a case of giving it a chance and getting used to it. It's not a pleasant experience on an iPhone. It's too white, too bright, not enough posts shown on the screen because of all of the surplus stuff. I'm sticking to the desktop version, that's much more useable and a much more pleasant browsing experience.

Greythorne · 20/08/2014 20:59

MNHQ
And you didn't think there might be any technical teething problems??
So you didn't plan to have a techy person on duty on the day of the switch??
And you didn't think to have a crib sheet ready on how to hide threads, how to flip threads, how to start a new thread??

Really??

I can't flip my threads and show all messages!

MysteriousCircusZebra · 20/08/2014 21:04

I can't get to know it. Its hurting my eyes Sad
On the plus side, I'll be able to get lots of rl stuff done instead. Probably done me a favor really. Every cloud has a silver lining and all that stuff.....

RustyBear · 20/08/2014 21:06

HauntedNoddyCar - to find Customise, look at the bar just above the OP, where it says >Talk>Site Stuff - on the right hand side of that bar is a downward pointing arrow in a circle. Touch that and you get a dropdown menu and Customise is the last item on that menu

TobyZiegler · 20/08/2014 21:07

And this!!!

MNHQ. And you didn't think there might be any technical teething problems??

crazynanna · 20/08/2014 21:08

And...that "I'm on" logo looks like one of my needles I use to take blood at work

ABlandAndDeadlyCourtesy · 20/08/2014 21:08

"am also disliking i'm on as i have to scroll through the whole thread to get to the new posts. I liked having a summery of who had recently posted"

I agree with this point.

RandomDiva · 20/08/2014 21:08

Would be nice if some people remembered, while criticising, that MNHQ are actual people who work hard for the site and therefor for its users. Constructive criticism is fine, but don't be so bloody rude.

FoxSticks · 20/08/2014 21:10

I tried to load this thread and waited and waited and waited until I got this. The new mobile site is really slow on my S3, and can't load long threads so I've had to switch back to desktop.

Hands up everyone who wants to try out the BRAND NEW MUMSNET MOBILE SITE
PlentyOfPubeGardens · 20/08/2014 21:10

Oh god I daren't look.

I was supposed to be a tester for this but you had to log in and I couldn't remember my password after we all had to reset them because of heartbleed and I did the 'forgot password' thingy but the email never arrived and I should have emailed contactus but I was tired and it was all. too. much. faff. Sorry MNHQ and please do keep me on the list of new feature testers, I'll try to do better next time Flowers

I see there are a couple of 'new mobile site is bloody awful' threads already. I don't have the energy to look until tomorrow. I hope it's just fear of change and it's wonderful really but just for tonight I shall stay on my lappy where everything is just where I left it.

[tired]

sunbathe · 20/08/2014 21:12

Dawn, it's not a matter of getting used to something new, for me. I find it almost unworkable.

Please give us the option of 'mobile classic'.

It's not relaxing anymore. It's not easy.

TobyZiegler · 20/08/2014 21:13

Oh and you may know this already but you 'MN have commented on this thread' doesn't appear on the new mobile version. Another very useful addition that has now been lost.

mipmop · 20/08/2014 21:15

There are a few things that are just a case of "where's that now? Oh it's over there", fair enough, although anticipating these questions and providing the answer is something that I'd expect. But there are significant changes that are design decisions- not glitches, not stuff that users have to relearn, actual decisions to change how users experience the site. And just pressing "go live" without anticipating and dealing with that is extremely unusual.

Cadsuane · 20/08/2014 21:16

I have a Windows 7 phone and after I open a page the blue bar pops up and then sticks in the same place so I can't read what's underneath. For example I was trying to customise the pages but the blue bar was stuck over the save changes box.

A couple more things in general after checking android and Apple devices.
The highlight for the opening post is far too pale and only on the first post.
We need a way to navigate without going to the bottom of the page.
Especially useful as Threads I'm watching now opens the whole thread from the beginning rather than allowing you to jump in to the latest posts.

CorporateRockWhore · 20/08/2014 21:19

greyhound literally hundreds of posts on this site tonight saying how awful and unusable the new layout is, so what I'm saying is a pretty fair summation of the situation, I think.

How MN could have tested this format and thought it was an improvement, is beyond me. And I'm a web manager.

crispandfruity · 20/08/2014 21:19

I've got to grips with it, and some of the new schnizz is great. However, the top advert floaty thing needs to be KILLED IN THE FACE!!!

todayisnottheday · 20/08/2014 21:20

Thank you to the poster who pointed out highlight op!

It seems really slow sadly. Taking ages to load even a small thread Sad
