Hands up everyone who wants to try out the BRAND NEW MUMSNET MOBILE SITE

RowanMumsnet · 20/08/2014 14:42

Hello comrades

As lots of you will know, we've been developing a brand new, souped up version of the Mumsnet mobile site for seven geological eras quite a long time now.

We can now exclusively reveal that the new mobile site is... TOTALLY AND UTTERLY ABOUT TO BE RELEASED, LIKE, ANY TIME NOW.

We've tested it on loads of MNers (Flowers to those who have helped out) but inevitably there will be glitches that only reveal themselves once tens of thousands of you dive in and start using it - so please use this thread to let us know about those (with the usual info about browsers and devices).

And if you like it, please pass along Cake and Wine to ShamTech, BrunoTech, JessicaMumsnet and all the other techs and MHQers who have been working their digits off on this.

The new improved apps are coming, honest... but in the meantime, if the old apps are driving you bonkers, do please take the new mobile site for a test drive.

After every post there is an ellipsis (...) Click that and you have report, PM, reply, bookmark, profile and top.

Scroll to top of the page there is a row of three circles with icons on the right, below that there is a smaller circle with an arrow, click on that and get add post, advanced search, threads I'm on, customise, watch thread, I'm on, I'm watching.

The middle of the three circles with picture of a person, click on that and will turn off bottom bar.

Click customise to choose oldest or newest post at top, number of posts per thread, and highlight op (not currently working)

Below the box you post in there are th ree circles to the left. The first is smilies, the middle is formatting, the right is attach file

AYC -
"Hang on. I'll play

bike thanks cake

I'm liking that bit. grin

oooh

nifty

like this bit"

now - that is fucking annoying - I actually spent 96p to buy a keyboard for my tablet that meant that I could have all the characters on it, so that I could do and ^ and [ and ] etc by long pressing instead of going into the special symbols keyboard - I did it just* for Mumnset, and you've ruined that - so really, you owe me 96p.

RubyGoat · 20/08/2014 20:20

Thought my tablet was broken, relieved it's not.

  • Pictures are tiny, if I zoom in enough to see them, the ad at the top, & the blue bar at the bottom get so big they obscure a fair part of the screen.

  • I've selected the option to highlight OP's posts. It didn't work.

  • Why can't I have my own posts highlighted any more?

  • All the threads on TIO also have 18 posts.

  • Regarding TIO - I only use this to see whether I want to go back to a thread, if it's moved on. This is no longer possible.

  • My threads are back to front, see screenshot, the OP is highlighted at the bottom of the last page instead of the top of the first! Why?

  • On the plus side, I like that I can finally go to a specific page in a thread.

  • Also like the toolbar at the bottom, except that it gets enormous when I zoom in.

Also, where is this this bookmark thing that everyone keeps referring to? Or is that just for Ipad/desktop users?

New mobile page is SHIT
Completely SHIT
Utterly SHIT
I can't believe it's been tested on humans
It's SHIT
please go back to previous mobile page

HauntedNoddyCar · 20/08/2014 20:21

Threads I'm on is bollocksed right up.
When posting it didn't seem to do anything so I had to hope. Went to TIO which didn't help. Had to go to thread and scroll down to the bottom of p1 to get to the last button to find whether my post had posted one or several times. All of which took two taps on the screen before.

nickelbabe · 20/08/2014 20:21

I haven't got an ellipsis after every post

mine just goes straight to the next poster Confused

MultipleMama · 20/08/2014 20:24

How do I hide posts on the mobile layout???

I tried hiding via desktop and then reopening the mobile and the threads are still there!!

RubyGoat · 20/08/2014 20:25

On the plus side, I am going to get a lot more done round the house.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 20/08/2014 20:25

Every post is separated by a thin blue line. In each post "container" there is ... in the bottom right hand corner.

bearfrills · 20/08/2014 20:25

I'm really sorry to chime in with the complaints when I know that lots of people have worked really hard on it. I have this wistful little image of you all sitting round excitedly hopeful that we'll all love it and now being really angry and disappointed that we don't. I'm over thinking it.

I just can't get on with the new layout. I really, really can't. It's giving me a headache (I'm going to need to log off, it's from the glare of a pure white screen), it's sterile and cold and clinical looking. It looks cheap. The posts all seem to run together because there's barely any separation between them. Threads I'm On is of no use whatsoever now without the little list of usernames and first few words of what they've posted. Bookmarking is a faff. Navigating is a faff. The number of posts has gone from next to the thread title. The customise menu is lacking (why the tick box option to hide the special needs threads!? Seems a bit random).

Really hoping there'll be an option to use the classic mobile site view, that way those that hate the new layout are happy and those that love the new layout are happy.

Attheendof · 20/08/2014 20:25

Now back on desktop, hard to fit it on the screen but still preferable (and less painful on my eyes) than the new site.

Munchmallow · 20/08/2014 20:26

ItsAllGoingToBeFine my circles are empty, with no icons.

If I click the ellipsis, nothing happens.

I still don't know what the coloured blocks at the bottom are.

I'm having to use my laptop to post as the mobile site won't let me.

ConfusedConfusedConfusedConfusedConfusedConfused

I hate it and will probably use the desktop site (if I can work out how to get there)

Romeyroo · 20/08/2014 20:27

Okay, have found threads I am on; it includes threads I decided to leave and therefore hid. In the old TIO, these were not there.
In fact, I had decided to hide whole topics for my mental wellbeing.
So if anyone works out how to hide topics or threads please let me know!

elQuintoConyo · 20/08/2014 20:27

Too
Much
Scrolling

I haven't tried navigating yet. Just turned my phone on and thought MN had broken!

Every fucking time i scroll up, the blue buttons at the bottom 'syretch' to cover half - or more - of the screen, then ping back when I take my finger off. Shite.

I MN from my phone, only my phone, on the bus/bog/in a cafe/when DS is sleeping and there's no housework. This new style will find me googling cats that look like Hitler instead!

Oh shit - where have the easy-peasy emoticons gone? And the gives italics etc...?

Yeuk.

I'm out of here [sad face emoticon]

HauntedNoddyCar · 20/08/2014 20:28

Nope. Not got a smaller circle with an arrow nor have the three circles got pics in. The image on the rectangle at top left isn't showing.

owlbegoing · 20/08/2014 20:28

When I select highlight OP it only highlights the OP and not any other posts by the OP Confused

ThatBloodyWoman · 20/08/2014 20:28

So if I go on the desktop site its really unresponsive on my tablet.
If I go on here I haven't got a clue whats going on.
I'm off to watch tv.

Orangeisthenewbanana · 20/08/2014 20:29

Big like to the easy emoticons and font thingys. Reserving judgement on the layout until I've given it a fair chance to get used to it, but like some of the shortcut buttons. Biggest issue so far is the ads. Seem to be loads more of them and they are far more intrusive than I remember (well, I was never irritated by them like this before!) - that is a big dislike from me.

ThatBloodyWoman · 20/08/2014 20:29

Errr.
How do I log out?

boredofdinosaurs · 20/08/2014 20:29

Ok, I'm really not one to moan, and I appreciate the need for adverts on a site like this. But a massive one across the top of the screen that changes, just outside of where my eye is looking, is 100%, guaranteed to give me a migraine.

From reading a thread for 2 minutes with the bumpfest 2014 ad flicking back and forth I could already tell I would get a headache.

If they have to be there (and be that big) please make them static.

Romeyroo · 20/08/2014 20:29

Yes, this is giving me a headache too.

Agree about getting more done around the house, though.

MNHQ, please, please switch it back

OrangeMochaFrappucino · 20/08/2014 20:30

I want the social share buttons gone - can't see an option to hide them anymore. My worst nightmare is inadvertently sharing a Mumsnet thread on FB or Twitter - it wouldbe easy to hit those buttons by mistake so if there is no way to get rid of them, I'll have to stop using the site - they used to give me palpitations before I figured out how to hide them on the old layout!

Also hating that TIO doesn't show you the new posts and when you click on the thread it takes you back to the beginning and you have to scroll through the whole thing to find new posts.

Overall, not a fan! And the presence of social share buttons is a deal-breaker for me!

nickelbabe · 20/08/2014 20:30

okay, i couldn't enlarge pictures on the old mobile site - i hated that, but i lived with it, because it was a "newfangled" thing anyway.
still can't seem to do it on this new mobile site (that is still loading page after half an hour)

The text is too large - it's like you're saying "come on dears, you're all getting on a bit now, this'll save you going to the optician" - i liked the fact that I could still read the really small text and mock DH when he's wearing his new reading specs because he's old
you can't fit so much on the screen.

It also looks like a child's computer toy!!!

HowardTJMoon · 20/08/2014 20:31

I like it.

It's got a nice clean layout and I like the buttons along the bottom. Does seem a little slower to load than the original but not a big issue.

The only changes I'd make are:

a) have an "All posts on one page" button - this is 2014, mobile devices have more than enough memory, and

b) Try to find out why your ad platform seems to think that I'd be interested in AT&T's Uverse home broadband that's only available in the US.

Overall though, good job!

SwedishEdith · 20/08/2014 20:31

Have had to go back to ancient netbook now as my eyes were hurting from the glare. Remember the other week when we were all complaining about how the site looked but it was just a glitch - well, that glitch was better than this.
