FWR split continued

We have decided to start a new thread about this as the other thread was near capacity and taking a while to load.

Here is Justine's post from earlier on

We can give a Radical Feminism topic a go if that's what people want and see if it works. Obviously we need to be crystal clear that no one is obliged to post in one particular place and no one should feel excluded from any topic but we could test it out, and see if it helps resolve tensions. We'll do that in the next few days.

There are a couple of other things to think about as well.

First, those who come onto FWR to derail and inflame. We acknowledge that we have been too slow in the past to spot these posters for what they were. We're sorry about that and hope we're a lot quicker at dealing with them now. We're all for opinions but we do draw the line at posters whose only obvious intent is to goad.

And secondly, this idea that FWR can be an unwelcoming place to those who aren't following the 'party line'. Judging by posts on recent threads and by our inbox this is a view of a significant number of Mumsnetters and obviously that's not a healthy situation. Mumsnet is a place for discussion and for diverse opinion and it's the exchange of ideas and tolerance of differing opinions that makes it the board it is.

We do hope threads like this help to clear the air a bit and remind everyone that, whatever the differences of opinion, the FWR board will only ever be the stimulating, thought-provoking, enriching place we'd all like it to be if people feel that they can express themselves without being jumped on.

Please do continue to let us know your thoughts.

Try it and see. What's the worst that could happen? That you are proved right?

You clearly expect me to be more robust, given the indifference to my explanations of why I don't feel comfortable posting, so same applies to you.
You could always try the advice always given to FWR regulars when we get a troll invasion - just ignore them and they'll go away. Or you could phrase your OP in a way that recognises the toll that DV takes on women (i.e. death) but that you want to explore an element of the patriarchy that is x, y and z. It's the strive for equivalence that gets people's backs up, I think.

Alameda · 30/06/2012 01:23

why not start the thread and just see what happens, or is this based on an actual true story of a thread a while ago?

AyeRobot · 30/06/2012 01:27

Actually, that's just got me thinking about equitability, rather than equality. There's a thread about that in me, I'm sure.

ScroobiousPip · 30/06/2012 01:29

Dreaming - human rights topic - anyone interested?

Why not start the thread? I wouldn't be interested in it, so I wouldn't even click it but if others are, why not?

yellowraincoat · 30/06/2012 01:34

I would love to go to bed but I'm working :(

Alameda · 30/06/2012 01:37

and am worried about colicky pony from the tack room and keep checking to see if any news - remember how frightening it was to sit with friend's ponies and how quickly it can change either way

LurkingAndLearningForNow · 30/06/2012 04:38

A bit OT:

What does PARD stand for?

Olivia, I really like the idea of the three boards!

HesterBurnitall · 30/06/2012 04:41

Lurking it stands for Polite And Reasonable Discourse.

LurkingAndLearningForNow · 30/06/2012 04:52

Thanks Hester :)

JugglingWithTangentialOranges · 30/06/2012 06:43

Morning all !

Just catching up on where we got to last night ....

JugglingWithTangentialOranges · 30/06/2012 06:44

Hope your pony is OK, Alameda ?

JugglingWithTangentialOranges · 30/06/2012 06:45

Anyone like a Brew ? Smile

FallenCaryatid · 30/06/2012 07:27

A human rights board would be interesting.
I've got into disagreements when I've prioritised children's right to be protected and safe over a woman's right to keep her children whilst involved in an abusive relationship. Likewise when teenage boys are involved in a relationship and held to be more responsible for their behaviour than girls as in the infamous Romeo and Juliet law thread.

LurkingAndLearningForNow · 30/06/2012 07:38

I'd LOVE a human rights board. I agree with your statement about women staying in abusive marriages to the detriment of the children (seems to be taboo around here to say that's wrong)

A human rights board could be very educational, and a place to have certain feminist topics debated without anyone being shut down (eg prostitution)

ComradeJing · 30/06/2012 07:57

I think that feminism is the place to discuss the experiences of women and focusing on the experiences of women. Whilst DV against men is an issue my personal feeling is that it would be better discussed somewhere else unless the title was directly related to the patriarchy. I do view it as derailing in a discussion of VAW for someone to start discussing VAM.

Having a equality section or a human rights section feels about right to me.

EclecticShock · 30/06/2012 08:22

Human rights would be good. Hiding this thread now as I've had enough quite frankly of being told what I can and can't think or discuss.

OTheHugeManatee · 30/06/2012 08:24

Of all the suggestions floated so far I think a human rights/social justice topic is the one most likely to do what's needed.

Himalaya · 30/06/2012 08:32

I'm not sure - human rights pervades so much of what we talk about all over MN - the right to education, human rights in employment, women's rights, disability etc...

I think a "Save The World" topic on social justice, environment (beyond ethical living...), charities, the annual Xmas shoebox debate, and human rights campaigns etc would be good.

dreamingbohemian · 30/06/2012 09:21

Scroobius thanks for the link! Have posted.

I would spend a LOT of time in Human Rights Smile

VictorGollancz · 30/06/2012 09:45

There's a lot for anyone to engage with from last night but I couldn't stop thinking about it being suggested to chibi that she should engage with a post that claimed BME people to be genetically inferior. (Chibi said that engaging with sexist posts is, for her, very similar).

I cannot get that out of my head. I cannot believe that anyone is advocating that. If someone wants to engage with racist views (and claiming that BME people are inferior is flat-out racist) then I will be the first to applaud their tolerance, patience and yes, their PARD.

But if someone wants to shoot that shit down, or leave it, or whatever, then surely - outside of a personal attack - that is something that we can tolerate instead of using it as a basis to sum up the character of the board as negative?

Yes, yes, it's a board ABOUT feminism, etc, but MNHQ you cannot, you CANNOT, take posters' unwillingness to engage with dominant, sexist, racist, views as evidence that there is something fundamentally wrong with FWR.

Leave it as it is.
