So it's what, 3 weeks to go til the Xmas meetup?

Is this going to be this year's controversy? Do I have to read the whole thing or can I just skim it?

Very much liked the Rule vs Act utilitarianiam :)

The day I get a spreadsheet is the day I realise it's all got a bit much.

I'm, er, now rather embarassed that I saw the word 'chicken' and assumed it was about me. Like I'm the only chicken here

UrsulaBonfirey · 08/11/2011 21:05

no linky no likey

Trills · 08/11/2011 21:05

Really, Lizzy, people talk to their friends in places that are not Mumsnet? And they don't invite all 600,000 MNers to join them? How shocking! Shock

zippadeedoodaa · 08/11/2011 21:06

Still no one has answered my question

All things being equal why hasn't TLES been banned?

I've read most of most threads about this. I could be wrong about my assessment of the whole situation (wouldn't be the first time), but I think there's an issue of miscommunication. There are people who are very knowledgeable about whatever it is they're involved with ? and those are people who will inevitably see the worst that can happen; and there are people who know they don't know and ask for advice; and then there are people who genuinely don't know that they don't know, iyswim, and innocently posts something that absolutely riles the more knowledgeable posters.

What should happen is that the poster who doesn't know gets the information they need; and the poster who doesn't know that they don't know gets more than information but also gets an education about . From my brief looks, over some time, at the various animal areas, DBF is very, very good at the former, but didn't seem to deal very well with the latter. I can well understand how frustrating it can be to be constantly dealing with dogs that need rescuing because of people's ignorance/lack of knowledge, but if an area becomes untenable because people avoid it, then the possibility of education flies out of the window.

DBF will continue in her good work, but her attitude in The Dog House had an unfortunate side-effect in that it became an area where people didn't want to dip in to just for interest, so the educational opportunity got lost.

It's not only The Dog House and DBF ? there's a thread in The Tack Room where someone posted an innocent question. There were some good and informative responses (from which I learned that I didn't know what I didn't know, but I do now). But there was one response that solely said they'd go postal ? no explanation, no education. And that's the problem. Yes, it can be frustrating to be constantly coming up against ignorance, with the possible consequence of dogs being destroyed because of that ignorance; but ignorance can only be overcome by education, and that requires huge amounts of patience by those have more knowledge that they're willing to patiently explain over and over again. And I think that's the point that DBF gave up on.

imbannedtoo · 08/11/2011 21:08

I love DBF, she's an absolute star who has never seriously lost her rag despite extreme mickey taking and provocation. The Doghouse needs her spirit IMO, even though there are other posters there who are also extremely valuable.

You can ban me again, I'm Junglist/ Spikeycow. See ya

JeremyVile · 08/11/2011 21:08

Why would tles have been banned?

Lizzylou · 08/11/2011 21:09

Trills, I am tantruming as I type.
How very dare they?

{especially if they make a humungous deal about other people having groups to chat in}

Ho hum.

SoupDragon · 08/11/2011 21:10

Trills, what is interesting about MMutts is that, earlier, there were complaints that DBF was unable to read what was said about her and was unable to respond. Apparently this was unfair. And yet lo! A secret forum where a large chunk of the controversial deleted thread has been posted and where the other main poster is unable to read or comment... How strange.

It doesn't seem to be accepted generally that the doghouse is a pretty unwelcoming place. To many posters, I think it is. I'm sure HQ could run a macro to work out how many people have the topic hidden. I would suggest quite a lot.

TeWihara · 08/11/2011 21:11

Oh... what?!

I didn't save the link!

Fuck it then, I don't care.

oh god, now I am confused and have indeed spent all evening on MN, its ok though DH is on a conf call. DC are asleep.

MmeLindor. · 08/11/2011 21:12

Ok, this is getting silly now.

Look, if you don't like MN then go. Off you go to Mouldies or Temp Forum or wherever.

If you want to stay and engage with MNHQ to find ways of improving the site then do so.

But going over there and bitching about MN - and anyone can read that forum, it is not locked down - is just mind boggling.

fwiw, I read the thread that DBF linked to and have to agree that based on THAT thread, without any previous history then DBF should not have been banned. However, there was previous history and this must be taken into consideration.

Justine
Was DBF's post reported and was it the only one on that thread reported? There are very few deletions.

As to TLE - I do think that she should be at the very least warned.

This is not the first time that she has been involved in a large scale controversy on MN, I think. Weren't there other instances?
