Northern - I heard booming music when I read your post. Dum-Dum-DDUUMM!

LaurieFairyCake · 08/11/2011 17:29

Oh god, Moldies - that was hilariously insane.

Slack jawed horrified reading that was.

This is nowt compared to that.

I'm v glad dbf has gone. I really objected to the way it was all 'her way or no way'. I remember reading a recent thread where she said (can't remember the exact words) that she would put a dog's life ahead of a child's or words to that affect. Not sure what she was even doing on a parenting forum tbh. Another recent thread; a dog had bitten a child and no one asked how the child was!
In other topics, even AIBU, people debate, argue and even flame but in the doghouse if you disagreed with dbf there was v little point in contributing.

May snuffle over to the Doghouse again now Smile.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 08/11/2011 17:32

Justine - I've just seen your post saying you would delete comments like the one about rape. I'm so, so glad you've said that - thank you!

That's exactly the sort of clarification I was wanting about the Feminism section, and perhaps I didn't ask the right questions back then. I'm really glad to know this now, though.

LadyMontdore · 08/11/2011 17:33

Also - MNHQ it's your site so do what you damn well like!

Saggyoldclothcatpuss · 08/11/2011 17:33

"As I remember, DBF/Val has always made a point of saying that she isn't any kind of expert or authority, just someone who cares very much for dogs and isn't afraid to speak her mind.
Obviously she does have a great deal of experience and expertise with dogs, but I've never seen her set herself up as an authority figure.
"
See thats where I disagree. DBF storms on to any animal based thread and takes over. Her belief verges on fanaticism.
Dont get me wrong, she makes many valid points, and Ive agreed with her on more than one occasion, and she has tried to help me in the past, but her tone is very authoritative, and often overbearing. Ive seen more than one thread where she has been very accusatory and gone beyond passionate into plain rude!
I try and steer clear of the Doghouse, as the general feel is that its Vals stomping ground and her posse cover her back. This is wrong, and the forum should be less judgemental and more supportive.
Yes, people should think hard before getting a dog. Yes, more people should rehome dogs, rather than buying puppies, but not everyone wants a staff or GSD, however endearing or good with children they are. Val can be very rude, Ive seen people upset by her in the past, and if she has been warned, banned and then reinstated in the past, and then warned again, then what do people expect?
HQ do as very good job keeping a massive forum relatively troll free, and they may not always get it right, but the rules cover the massed collective. Why should there be individual treatment for rule breakers? DBF obviously broke the rules on more than one occasion, and her banning seems to be related to an accumulation of offences, not just the last thread that she posted on.

JustineMumsnet · 08/11/2011 17:33

@CalatalieSisters

Interestingly the poor tone started to develop at the point when we first had a dog topic rather than just an overall pets topic. No idea what conclusion to draw from that, but it was quite a striking change at around that point.

That's not quite our recollection, think the aggressive tone was already underway but maybe diluted by the tortoise owners?

GrimmaTheNome · 08/11/2011 17:34

Justine - I didn't mean to imply it wasn't also your responsibility. But if more people had posted diverse opinions instead of staying schtum, it probably wouldn't have got to the stage where you needed to wade in, which would have been better all round.

PacificDogwood · 08/11/2011 17:37

Oh, Mouldiegate was far, far worse, but it is quite interesting that the banning of one albeit prolific, poster creates such controversial debate

BecauseImWorthIt · 08/11/2011 17:38

In another wandering tributary on this post - I'd like to pick up on the issue of the FWR board. Lots of posters on MN complain that it's scary and intimidating, and you get short shrift if you don't fit in. I have experienced it myself, although I do continue to lurk and post when I feel comfortable so to do.

There are a couple of posts that illustrate this perfectly. They are both from LucyStone - for which I apologise hugely, as this is no way intended as having a pop at Lucy, just that these demonstrate what many regular Feminists keep trying to deny - that there is a strong collective which can exclude many. It's almost like it has become a quiche:

i don't mind debating rape myths a million times over, but i object to having women told they're lying in the one section where we practice the "i believe you" motto.

In other words, the FWR has its own rules. It matters not a jot whether I accept the 'I believe you' motto, but it is an assertion that this is what is ^practiced* on that board. Therefore anyone who doesn't know this is the case is likely to fall foul of the FWR board. And who got to say that this is what would be practiced?

We have never asked for anyone to be banned for a difference of opinion, Justine. even though we're the many headed monster in your eyes, it seems, we don't agree constantly. if we asked for everyone with a different opinion to be banned, then hell, there's times we'd be hitting the report button every other post. we have every shade of feminism over there, but people insist on painting us as clones.

Can't you see that speaking as 'we' does make you seem like a collective voice, standing firm against the 'you'? And you wonder why people insist as painting you as clones!

The issue of trolls/derailers on the FWR board is a completely different one, and I have said before that I do think that MNHQ should be more vigilant in that regard. I believe you, Justine, when you say that you are banning/warning them, but I don't think you read the boards carefully/often enough to really understand how much of an issue people like Bob and Edd are.

Anyway, my threepennyworth.

I still think that the banning of DBF was fair, although it was unfortunate that it had to happen the way it did. I love it when people have passionate views and are prepared to argue their corner here. It's what makes MN what it is. But I hate it when passion spills into aggression and hostility, with no thought for the person it is being directed at.

LaurieFairyCake · 08/11/2011 17:38

People own ??? Confused

Thought they were protected - I haven't seen one since the 70's when we had one.

WeepsInPaleDew · 08/11/2011 17:39

Justine, Grin although my next door neighbour is a tortoise owner and she is very fierce. I've heard her rowing through my bedroom wall. She dilutes nowt.

She mean.

ColdSancerre · 08/11/2011 17:39

I'd love a tortoise.

And now I have to go to my Chinese class without having done my homework because I've been reading this thread all afternoon!

TeWihara · 08/11/2011 17:42

Tortoise breeding is allowed again now - and they've been advertising baby ones for ages at our pet store (for £250 each, obviously) I secretly want one.

Saggyoldclothcatpuss · 08/11/2011 17:43

I have 2 tortoise(s)

LRDtheFeministDragon · 08/11/2011 17:46

BIWI - I commented on the use of 'we' elsewhere. We're attacked as a group and it's not considered 'personal', and it's not really possible to respond individually when I don't know whose post sparked Justine's comments, or any other comments.

The 'I believe you' thing was discussed in teh context of a mumsnet campaign I think - so it's a bit like saying 'we' have a 'let girls be girls' policy maybe?

MildlyNarkyPuffin · 08/11/2011 17:46

BIWI, someone recently posted a link to an article in the Feminism section. I suggested they post it in AIBU too so it could get seen by a wider audience.

They did, and their OP in AIBU said 'I posted this in Feminism [brave emoticon]'

They then got told that it wasn't a feminist issue, that it shouldn't have been posted outside of the 'feminist' Grin section etc etc. It went on and on. None of that was from the feminists. It was from the MN regulars who feel very strongly that they are not feminists. Or at least 'not the Feminism section kind'.

Please can we have DBF back.

BeyondTheLimitsOfAcceptability · 08/11/2011 17:47

I have a tortoise. Love that this somehow makes me some sort of hippy free-love person WRT pet ownership Grin

nenevomito · 08/11/2011 17:48

Just as an aside I have a tortoise. An old one from before the ban who is about the same age as my parents

Don't bother is my advice. They are essentially walking rocks and can run up some very interesting vets bills if, like mine, they forget they have to eat to survive when they come out of hibernations.

Do you know how much it costs to treat Tortoise anorexia? Nope? Didn't think so. [ouch emoticon]

JustineMumsnet · 08/11/2011 17:49

@JessieLeGrund

Actually, pictish, it would appear that MN lifts bans on posters, so it isn't final and nor should it be.

Last year they accused a recently bereaved mother of being a troll and banned her. Not their finest hour.

I think we'd say that we re-banned someone who'd been previously banned 4 times for trolling actually Jessie.

CalatalieSisters · 08/11/2011 17:49

Ah, perhaps so, Justine. I might have been in a benign cockatiel bubble around then.

JustineMumsnet · 08/11/2011 17:51

@pictish

I had no idea that banned posters have been unbanned on here before. I think that makes things very complicated.

It's pretty rare tbh.
