Anybody in at MN Towers tonight? I really think we deserve an explanation given that I have not done anything constructive all afternoon whilst perusing this thread???

ifancyashandy · 11/07/2010 21:26

thanks for explaining

but did op ask for it to go??

grumblegrumble · 11/07/2010 21:27

It ended with a discussion about the appropriate use of 'boy' to describe a male employee, what that says about the employer's mindset, and the general discussion about economic disparity, whether it's better to employ someone at a wage that reflects their 'home' country living standard, or whether a 'western' employer ought always to pay western-level wages.

And there was also a discussion about quite degrading work that people are expected to do in developing countries (presumably as opposed to the perceived or actual indignity of being referred to as a 'boy'/paid lower wages than an employer would pay, proportionately, in the UK).

I think that was it. But it was moving fast!

pagwatch · 11/07/2010 21:28

I was following that!

Of course it was robust but it was very interesting and thought provoking.

Shame it was deleted. I was finding it challenging and it was making me query many assumptions I didn't even realise I had made.

I thought that was what mumsnet was about?

mamalovesmojitos · 11/07/2010 21:30

pagwatch, couldn't have put it better myself.

grumblegrumble · 11/07/2010 21:30

Sorry, better to pay a lower wage (comparable to their 'home' country) or for that employee not to have a job at all, leading in to a discussion about that basis on which the domestic workers leave their home countries and the conditions they live in while working for expats.

WhereTheWildThingsWere · 11/07/2010 21:30

Missed the thread, but just read this one and read the above post as it being about expat's domestic staff.

I looked like this ->

ifancyashandy · 11/07/2010 21:30

Pretty much summs it up Grumble

But I flabergasted about the reason it was removed. Sounds bonkers.... and as lots have already said, sure beats 'AIBU to not go to my SIL's brothers friend child free wedding'.

I think it was deleted because it got out of hand with people referring to the OP's facebook, other threads and making quite offensive remarks about her RL.

Whilst the subject of the discussion may have been interesting and thought provoking and valid for those points, i am glad it has gone for the OP's sake.

It was getting thoroughly out of hand

I doubt it was the subject matter tbh MN is made of sterner stuff I think the dubious reasons for starting it and the off board bs probably contributed to it being deleted.i will say though MOS I did expect an apology for your comments so will be reporting the said post on fb.

I agree with you stayfrosty. It turned into a broader debate that needs to be had about international development etc.

Can I just say that I concede on the points re. terminology and was willing to be educated further. Everything else stands.

Can't believe after a day of moaning from dh and dcs about me being on computer all of it was deleted....

ifancyashandy · 11/07/2010 21:33

Gigantaur your point would hold water if the OP hadn't continued to post. But she did (and I mean about the subject matter, not any posters) right up till the end.

Didn't strike me as the delicate type!

What was going on off board?

backtotalkaboutthis · 11/07/2010 21:34

Dittany, wrong again: there were no expats boasting about how grateful their staff were, though it doesn't suit you to admit it.

PortiaNovmerriment · 11/07/2010 21:34

Maybe they didn't want the press to pick up on it and add neo-colonial to the mix when referring to mumsnet schoolyard bullies?

whomovedmychocolate · 11/07/2010 21:35

For the record what is Mumsnet about?

MmeRedWhiteandBlueberry · 11/07/2010 21:35

I invested a lot into that thread.

It had passionate people on either side of the economic migrant debate but we were reasonably respectful, or at minimum, no one was offended.

Racism would be a reason to pull the thread, and although there were one or two erroneous accusations, there was no racism on the thread.

There are many, many more threads that Mumsnet should be ashamed of.
