With a shamefaced grin at myself for starting a pram thread ... bearing in mind its a long time since I had a baby ... would i really regret only being able to use a carseat for the first six months (rather than a "proper" pram?)

Space is limited as this is baby no. 3 and we have a dog so not lots of boot space.

Victorian terraced house so long narrow hall.

I def want a pram/puschair that I can attach a car seat to and was looking at quinny zapp purely for the size of it when folded. However, as it can't be used without the car seat until baby is 6 months old, and I know children shouldnt be in car seats for too long, I wonder if I'm being daft for considering it?

depends how long they will be in the carseat for. I wouldn't be happy: I like prams that lie flat (they can sleep in them as well, which is a big bonus). We have a pramette which folds pretty small and I think can be used with a carseat.

orangina · 06/05/2008 16:36

ditto effie

MamaG · 06/05/2008 16:37

Yes, its a bad idea isn't it. I'll go back to teh pramettes

OP posts:
EffiePerine · 06/05/2008 16:38

we are still using ours and DS is 19 mo. The wheels seem to fall off occasionally but you can pick up spares on Ebay (DON'T got the manufacturers, it takes ages and is expensive).

misdee · 06/05/2008 16:44

you are being daft.

get a pramette or a maclaren techno.

MamaG · 06/05/2008 16:47

misdee I knew you'd see this thread!

Can you put a car seat on a mclaren techno? If not, I'll have to look at the pramette. I liked hte silver cross 3d (si that right) but haven't seen it in teh flesh, so to speak. Ditto Pliko.

misdee · 06/05/2008 16:51

get the car seat to fit your car and then work around that. no pointing getting an m+p viaggio or whatever its called if it doesnt fit your car.

maclaren XLR takes the recaro car seats.

2point4kids · 06/05/2008 16:54

I did this and got rid of it soonafter DS1 was born!!
Bad idea

Pliko is good. Havent had one but friends have and highly recommend them

MamaG · 06/05/2008 16:56

you're such a pram geek thank you. I think any car seat with fit the car,DD is in a booster seat (8) and DS is in a "big" car seat (small 4 yo) but I've managed to fit my old graco carseat in (baby seat that is).

I hated the graco pram HATED THE BLOODY THING and gave it away, luckily my Mum has said she'll buy me a new pram...I need a new car really, but its on the list and we think we'll get one in Jan/Feb next year = that leaves us with a coujple of months in the Astra & dog.

misdee · 06/05/2008 16:57

i love being a pram geek.

MamaG · 06/05/2008 16:59

ooh are you? Are you gettin ga quinny speedi/buzz to go underneath it as well?!

OP posts:
misdee · 06/05/2008 17:01

no.

i am getting a second hand bug

MamaG · 06/05/2008 17:02

I was looking at them earlier thinking "how much?!"

OP posts:
misdee · 06/05/2008 17:03

it will sell on for the same price i am getting it for.

and carrycot doubles up as a first bed for little one. i can just wheel it into my minature sized bedroom at night.

but yes 'how much!' indeed!

MamaG · 06/05/2008 17:05

Yeah yeah, you keep telling yourself you need it

I was considering second hand something or other then selling on.

I've looked at the mclaren adn don't really like it so back to the drawing board

OP posts:
misdee · 06/05/2008 17:08

maxi cosi is the most versatile car seat. off the top of my head it works with

bugaboo
all quinnys
mutsy
mountain buggy

loads of others as well.

plus its the safest car seat out there.

anyway i dont need to buy much, have heaps of baby clothes, both sisters have 6month old babies, boy and girl, and my loft is packed.

i do need maternity clothes though.

SlightlyMadSweet · 06/05/2008 17:08

Don't use a car seat as a makeshift pram.

It is not good for the lungs, and probably not for back either. There are some reports which suggest that some babies are at increased risk of cot death whilst in a carseat.

Either use a proper pram or a lay flat pushchair buggy. Car seat travel system things should be for occassional use.

MamaG · 06/05/2008 17:11

Thanks SMS I've decided against it

misdee I need EVERYTHING. DS is 4 now and I'd decided no more children- ha! I've given everything away and I mean EVERYTHING. Luckily mate opposite me has a 6 mo baby and has offered to lend me everything except pram (which my Mum has said she'll buy bless her)

Like you, I need maternity clothes - are you short? There are some black size 16 mat trousers going For Free on here, but the person who started the thread said they are too short for her (she's 5 2) but if you're smaller they might do - or if you're handy with a needle you might be able to make them 3/4 length? Worth a look.

Heifer · 06/05/2008 17:11

LOL MamaG - I just KNEW this thread would be yours....

I can't imagine having to think/talk about prams again... or nappies for that matter ....

misdee · 06/05/2008 17:11

agree with SMS

i do leave the car seat in the car, and am not one ofr usuing travel systems anyway.

MamaG · 06/05/2008 17:11

Nope, neither could I...!

OP posts:
SlightlyMadSweet · 06/05/2008 17:12

(Sorry I know that didn't really help as it only paraphrased what was in your OP).

If you don't want to use the "travel system" at all I would go for Techno XT - or a proper pram, but XT has a longer life.

If you want to use travel system on an occassional basis then either go for XLR as Misdee says, which is apparently quite big and heavy for a umbrella fold or a Graco as the pushchair is practiclally free when you take out the cost of the car seat, then you won't mind buying a umbrella fold at a later date....but OTOH you say you don't want a Graco.

misdee · 06/05/2008 17:13

am a size 20 mamag.

i am looking at those belly belt things to see if can just about squeeze some use out of my normal clothes for a little bit longer.

i literally have far too much. if you find out what your having, then i should be able to sort out a bundle for you.

i didnt clear out like i didnt with dd1+2 and when dd3 outgrew everything ijust put it i nthe loft. didnt have time to sort through things.

suey2 · 06/05/2008 17:14

my LO hated the car seat after a while- it was also a relief to change over the bug to the seat from the bassinet as she hated not being able to see out after about 3 months. The car seat- she kept trying to 'sit up' and fighting it.
She LOVES the bug seat: she can sit right up, doze off, then i can put her horizontal to keep her in a good position.
