Yesterday I entered the dark and mysterious world of PLAYMOBIL

dd1 was 4 yesterday and recieved a pony riding show ground box of wonderousness.

There are a lot of little bits though aren't there? And a small yellow minature screw driver that I am still unsure about.

I have a lasting memory of entering Chippy's ds's bedroom and the whole room was a giant playmobil diorama.

So I need tips.

Do you pack the kits away in special boxes or just let free mixing occur ?(I am a wee bit anal)

Are there any universal 'you must have this item' bits.

How long will this playmobil phase last? Will I be buying a lot more of this stuff?
There are an awful lot of little bits.

With this kit I can make a teeny tiny whip, there are miniscule little hand protectors for the whip. I was quite taken aback, I'm coming from the 'in your face' world of Duplo.

Ooooohhhhh, I can't wait!!!!!! We've just started on Duplo and I'm already eyeing up the Playmobil covetously. Never mind that by the time the DCs are ready for it, we'll be in the middle of a recession and won't have any money to spare for new knickers, never mind mini safe-crackers and teeny little babies in incubators.

Slubberdegullion · 08/04/2008 19:08

Cali, it certainly is huge in Germany. we were there at Christmas and most of the big dept stores (Kauhoffs or summat) just had gigantic playmobil scenes for their window displays.

A little gutteral noise came out of DH when he saw the Roman Centurian tableux.

andiem · 08/04/2008 19:11

we have the roman arena and now all the playmobil people are either christians or lions even the firemen

ConfusedMover · 08/04/2008 19:11

DS is 5.5 and has had Playmobil for a couple of years but to be honest has only really just got in to it properly i.e. he is now old enough to deal with the little tiny pieces etc. He adores it and I can see us expanding our collection for a few years to come! We had it all in one box until very recently, when to DS's great excitement we went out and bought a tool kit style divided carry case for all his knights & romans. he loves the carry case but to be honest it all ends up in a big muddle again....may as well use one box.

Slubberdegullion · 08/04/2008 19:13

lol andiem.

I'm suprised that playmobil are happy to be encouraging my dd to beat her misbehaving horses with a stick (yes there is a stick and a whip), but then if they do a gladiator arena

We're still going - ds is 10 and dd 6. Once the yellow lugs are in they take a lot fo effort to remove(ie only with screwdriver so hide it !)We have several plastci boxes but the larger itmes (house, castle, pirate ship, crane) are eithe rotu or in their boxes. Did draw the lien at the Colisseum. I actually tried to reunite the sets when we moved last year, with mixed success, but had fun reconstructing them

andiem · 08/04/2008 19:14

ooh yes there is an emperor who does thumbs up or down

Littlefish · 08/04/2008 19:16

Dd is 3 and plays with hers every day. We have one box for all the people and another box for all the accessories and other bits and pieces.

We are getting gradually more "princessy" as time goes on unfortunately and have recently become the proud owners of a princess and prince standing beside a golden fountain (which pumps out water), together with a peacock, unicorn and frog on a lily pad

Slubberdegullion · 08/04/2008 19:20

Oh I cannot show dd the princess with fountain and frog. She will neeeeeeeeeeeed it instantly.

OK so the feedback I'm getting is:

playmobil is going to be with us for many a moon

you can try to keep the bits separate, but you will get a nervous tic. Buy a large box (although I do like the sound of the tool box idea)

If anyone's interested, Sainsbury's have a small selection of playmobil stuff reduced from 4.99 to 1.25 or 3.99 to 99p. Sportsgirl, horse rider etc.

Slubberdegullion · 08/04/2008 19:34

Malory, you misplaced the baby Jesus. How very careless.

Oh here's another Q

If you do loose a bit, that in your childs mind is utterly essential, can you just buy the bit, or do you need to buy the whole farkin set?
(I suspect I know the answer to this already)

Slubber, do you know that back in the 80s they briefly introduced a trapper, with those evil traps with jaws and some squirrel skins and a Davy Crockett hat? Twas pulled after a campaign by anti-fur people.

I have a wino, with bare feet and a little green bottle.

Slubberdegullion · 08/04/2008 19:38

OMG really Kathy. That is extremely odd (the trapper).

I'm secretly excited about the sound of the wino. What kit does he come in?

OP posts:
BettySpaghetti · 08/04/2008 19:40

I love Playmobil!

We have a big storage box with a lid for the big things like tractor, helicopter, rescue boat etc and within that a biscuit tin for all the people and millions of bits.

Oh, and we also have a crane that stands about a metre high but theres no hiding that

kaz33 · 08/04/2008 19:41

I justify it as playmobil has very good resale value on ebay !

EffiePerine · 08/04/2008 19:41

wow

BettySpaghetti · 08/04/2008 19:42

Just read the bit about the wino

With the crane/builders you get a portaloo which appeals to DS's toilet fixation -he loves nothing more than putting one of the builders on the loo and suspending it from the crane whilst the builder is mid-poo
