Hi all,

I thought I'd start a thread for KS4 applications for Brit School as my daughter has her workshop and interview this week and I know we will both be anxiously waiting to here afterwards!

She's applying for Film and Media production strand as is really passionate about working within the film industry..

We have no idea what to expect at the workshop and interview at all!

good luck to anyone else there this week!

There are 78 places in year 12 music strand - 52 of these are for music and 26 are for music technology. There are only 25 places for music in year 10. Lots of the kids in y10 on music play more than 1 instrument, eg drums, bass, voice or voice & guitar, or voice & piano. Some play drums, but also play and arrange music for steel pans. However there are some who just sing or who are excellent at guitar.

Great, thank you so much!

We are considering applying to the Brit School either for year 10 or 12. DD is currently in year 9. I would like to hear opinions for those with kids there or who attended in the past. How are they getting on? Are they enjoying it? Is it better to move in year 10 or 12?

TIA

Hiya, My daughter started this year in VAD and it's definitely been a good move for her. It did take her a few weeks to settle into it (she had a lot of problems with bullying in her old school so was a bit spikey and retiscent to get to know new people at first), but all the kids in her year all seem reallty lovely and I don't think she's heard anyone say anything negative about another person since she's been there which has been a really positive experience for her! She's slowly been getting to know people and has a nice little group of friends now from across all the strands, not just VAD, and she's met up with a few of them out of school. As Hannah said, the kids are mixed up in their core lessons and GCSE options, as well as in their forms so they get to know kids from across all the strands.

The teaching in the main subject lessons seems very good and they seem to make an effort to make the less palatble subjects more interesting. My daughter actually said the other day that her maths lesson was really fun (she has always hated maths) and likewise Brit Fit (PE) she has said has been fun a couple of times (again she hates PE or any form of exercise).

The GCSE options they have to do the core subjects, but there is definitely a really good range of options for kids who are creative across a few subjects - as well as VAD my daughter is doing textiles and music - in her previous school she would only have been allowed one creative subject.

She's actually off school at the moment for a few days as she had a dental op yesterday, and she is desperate to be back at school - she's missing it already and it's only been a day!

Hope that helps - definitely worth going to one of the open days if you can to get a better feel for the school

That is lovely to hear.

It all sounds very positive.

Hi all.

We have decided to apply for year 10 so need to do the application soon. I would be grateful for advice on the process. DD is doing acting, music, dance at the Brit Saturday school; but we know these strands are competitive. She will probably enjoy VAD too. She loves the Saturday school and I think she will be happy there.

thank you

Templeria · 25/11/2024 09:57

Hiya,

I can only comment on the application process for VAD, as that's what my daughter does, but I think some elements are the same across all strands.

She did the application form and questions, and then early in the year (maybe Feb?) she had an email asking her to submit her portfolio online which was about 20 slides of her artwork (she also included some textiles projects as she makes some of her clothes, and a bit of her photography), and I think there was also another question she had to answer discussing a specific piece of work she'd done.

After that she was invited into the school for a workshop (there were about 30 kids in her session on the workshop day and she said 5 of them from her session including her got into her strand). After that there was an interveiw which we sat in on as well.

Hope that helps and good luck

DD said she wants to do theatre and that’s what she has been doing in Saturday school; she likes arts but has not done a lot snd doesn’t have a portfolio.

We will start the application process soon.

Does anyone know how many spaces are there in year 10?

5 from 30 doesn’t seem much. It seems quite competitive.

Autumnleavescolors · 28/11/2024 19:10

Do parents attend the workshop as well? How can DD prepare for theatre. May be better to apply for applied theatre which is less competitive?

Do everyone get invited for the workshop and interview?

What sort of questions they ask in the interview?

Autumnleavescolors · 21/12/2024 08:53

We are in the process of submitting the application for theatre year 10. I got two questions:

It is asking for qualifications and awards. What do children put?

Regarding the reference: did people attach the reference from the school? Or just include the name and email address of the Head of year? At what point did the school ask for the reference? It is nearly impossible for me to get a reply from the head of year.

thank you

Hi Autmnleaves

We're about to apply for year 10 Theatre today as well, so have more questions than answers at this point! It's nice to know that someone else is in the same boat as us.

My daughter has only ever received a school Dance award in year 8 and a Head Teacher award just few weeks ago, so she listed those. For the the reference, we only provided the name and email address of the principal, hoping that will suffice for them to make contact. I’m a bit concerned because someone earlier mentioned including supporting evidence, but unfortunately, we don’t have anything else to submit.

I understand there are 50 spaces in Year 10 Theatre, and the Head mentioned that there could be 7–9 applicants per spot—very competitive! Parents won’t attend the workshop, just the interview, and I’m really curious about how they decide who gets invited to the workshop/interview stage. My daughter is a bit stressed about her attendance, as it's below 96%, and is quite anxious about preparing her answers to the 4 questions. We really hope that she gets invited and has a chance to try out.

Nice to meet you online.

DD submitted the application; DD was working on the questions for a few weeks.

DD listed similar awards to your DD and we also put the Head teacher email reference. Similar DD has less than 96% attendance but she put the reason for it.

Best of luck

hi everyone, lovely to hear from others in the same boat. we are also working our way through the application form. Only decided a few days ago to apply. We never knew there was a creative arts option at the BRIT school. We had no idea this option existed. just hoping to get the right docs from school before the deadline. wishing everyone good luck with the application, it's a bit more onerous than I expected initially (just thought they had to submit the answers to the questions as a first step).

Autumnleavescolors · 03/01/2025 20:25

I will open a new thread for 2025

Autumnleavescolors · 08/01/2025 12:29

Have anyone got an idea on when the workshop will be this year? Trying to decide whether to book a holiday or not as I know the school got different term dates.

Thank you

Autumnleavescolors · 08/01/2025 13:11

I mean a holiday in Feb half term

ginman · 08/01/2025 15:49

I can only advise that last years was 21-23rd Feb. We did get an email letting us know this shortly after the applications closed. Good luck!
