Hi all,

I thought I'd start a thread for KS4 applications for Brit School as my daughter has her workshop and interview this week and I know we will both be anxiously waiting to here afterwards!

She's applying for Film and Media production strand as is really passionate about working within the film industry..

We have no idea what to expect at the workshop and interview at all!

good luck to anyone else there this week!

Hi everyone, my son has applied for Interactive Digital design and has his interview and workshop tomorrow! We are both so nervous, has anyone else gone for this strand ? And has any tips to give ? Thanks

A few years ago my ds was interested in this but at the open evening he was advised not to apply as he hadn’t done the Saturday school part and wouldn’t be able to keep up.

Has anyone on the reserve list been offered a place at all?

Nope, if there are any offers they would most likely be after induction day or at the beginning of September after school starts. what strand are you on reserve for ?

HeyAliBali · 20/07/2024 17:46

On Music reserve list. Not heard anything.

Looking forward to being in London in 10 days for Guildhall Jazz and Rock week soon. Anyone else's young ones going? My DS is concerned about not knowing anyone!

Thank you - we're on musical theatre.

I'm really surprised by his as my DS starts the Brits next month, but he hadn’t attended the Saturday school prior to applying but had a really passion for IDD.

Has anyone heard back about the options selections?

So are we but I know 5 others who are also in the reserve list so I think the chances are very slim. Our friend went to the Induction day and only 1 did not turn up. She said that everyone was very excited and couldn’t see anyone dropping out 😫

Skysti · 23/07/2024 12:00

Received GCSE’s options confirmation this morning, my DS will be happy as he got all his first options. Anyone else receive an email?

Pop53 · 26/07/2024 20:32

We got 1st 2nd 2nd choices for options. Not disappointed but we were hoping for Drama and or Music production, but being Brit bound is a bonus, and we are hoping that there may be extra curriculum clubs to that effect too. Plus doing film media production he may get to incorporate both within the stream.

hi, just wondered what the guildhall course was like? My ds on reserve for music too and not heard anything. I did call to see if there had been any places offered from reserve so far and there had not. Frankly relieved that waiting list places end soon as it has been quite a painful wait!

ginman · 29/08/2024 22:01

I hope everyone’s kiddies who were lucky enough to gain a place had fantastic first day! My daughter did! And for those on reserve I have everything crossed for you still 🤞🏼

My son is really enjoying Brit School and his music strand. He didn't get the options he wanted for GCSE (he wanted drama, Spanish and film/photography - but got Spanish, film and business) but doesn't seem too disappointed. I am gutted as he was really good at drama. I am looking forward to meeting parents at the BBQ this Friday. He has made some really nice friends from his strand and also met other lovely kids on the bus and in his other lessons. He said PE was fun and he went to film club to watch Friday 13th with some mates last week.

Pop53 · 18/09/2024 16:10

We didn't get Drama either (Cooper is on the film strand) so he is doing Spanish too.
As well as Graphic design and photography.
He saw the film too. Does your son get the 75 bus?

We are going to the BBQ

Hi yes my son catches the 75 all the way to school - so they probably know each other. My son often travels with another boy who used to go to his primary.

We are considering applying to the Brit School either for year 10 or 12. DD is currently in year 9. I would like to hear opinions for those with kids there or who attended in the past. How are they getting on? Are they enjoying it? Is it better to move in year 10 or 12?

TIA

My daughter started in September on the Music Strand, she has a long journey as we live in North London but I only have positive things to say about the school. She has really blossomed since being there and absolutley loves it! Being around likeminded kids of all different back grounds has really benefited her. She came from a very academic, strict school so were worried about this but so far all other academic subjects seem to be just as good at Brit and in some ways more varied - I would definitely recommend it to any child that has a passion for the strands on offer

Zanthe · 09/10/2024 12:09

I’d personally apply for Year 10 first so your child has two chances to get in and if they don’t get in at year 10, then at least they have two years to build on any missing skills and get more practice in and then they can have another go.

Ehall80 · 09/10/2024 12:29

agree with @Zanthe we are in Year 10 but if we hadn't got a place would have tried again for year 12

Son started y10 music strand and is very happy so far. Has lots of mates across different strands. Definitely is feeling inspired by his peers on the music course and came home to practice for hours the first few days. They all socialise and support each other at open mics outside of school on the weekend which is lovely to see. The difference between joining now and in post 16 would be they mix across strands for their other lessons so would get to meet more students on dance, theatre etc now. Post 16 you stick on your strand.

ginman · 09/10/2024 18:13

Hi, my daughter is a year 10 FMP student and is loving Brit school! There is of course some subjects she still loves more than others and some teachers she loves more than others but she is so happy there. She had 3 friends round last week and they all had nothing but positive things to say too. We live SE London but it’s still a long day so bear that in mind. She leaves 7.45 to get there for 8.30 and some days not home till 5 but she wouldn’t have it any other way!

Come along to the opening event if you can? And don’t under estimate how hard it can get to get a place. Really focus on that application and supporting evidence .. good luck!

Jumping on this thread. Does anyone know how many are accepted on the music strand for Year 12? Are most applicants multi-instrumentalists? Asking as my DS only plays one instrument but is keen to apply.

There are 78 places in year 12 music strand - 52 of these are for music and 26 are for music technology. There are only 25 places for music in year 10. Lots of the kids in y10 on music play more than 1 instrument, eg drums, bass, voice or voice & guitar, or voice & piano. Some play drums, but also play and arrange music for steel pans. However there are some who just sing or who are excellent at guitar.
