Does anyone know what an LP2 equates to? And how does anyone get in contact with anyone today?! I can't seem to get hold of anyone and we are in complete limbo

mumonthehill · 24/08/2023 13:17

Well done to all your dc whatever their results are. Ds done well but a bit disappointed in a couple of subjects, however still majority A's and A*. His chosen school 6th form has said they are over subscribed for chemistry so he has also now accepted his college place for a levels just in case, he is very fed up not knowing where he is going. There was a sense of relief at his school but no real joy, it all felt a bit flat.

MoFoFlo · 24/08/2023 13:17

DD feeling sad that she’s got a 3 in English language so will have to re-sit. Also a 3 in geography then the rest 4s and 5s, with a 6 in PE. She’s really disappointed as these are in the lower range of what she expected and she worked so hard. She was meant to have two or more subjects at a 6 or above for college but she still has a place and courses will be agreed at enrolment next Thursday. She’s planning a mix of btec and A-level subjects so hopefully will be able to go ahead as planned.

I’ve tried to reassure her that these results are a stepping stone to the next level and she can still move on as planned, but she feeling pretty down as she worked so hard.

Thinking of requesting remarks for Geography (1 mark off a 4) and English Language (2 marks off a 4). Also PE was one mark off a 7 and she says the mark for one of her coursework elements looks much lower than what her teacher had told her. Does this have to be requested through school?

elkiedee · 24/08/2023 13:18

DS1's results were quite good and I think met the grade requirements for all the colleges he had offers for. 4 9s inc Maths and Physics, 2 8s including Computer Science - OCR (a surprise as he said it was a horrible paper and this was also quite widely reported including here after the exam, 2 7s, a 6 in English Literature. He was saying he still hadn't quite decided which of the favourite two but is now on the bus to enrol in the one he slightly preferred.

whojamaflip · 24/08/2023 13:22

@MrsBeetlejuice a L2 P is the equivalent of a 4 at GCSE apparently

MrsBeetlejuice · 24/08/2023 13:27

@whojamaflip well I guess that's that then.

megletthesecond · 24/08/2023 13:30

I'm in shock as DS passed English with 6's. His mocks were 3 and 4 and he didn't do any revision at all.
He didn't get anything higher than a 6 mind you, his original predicted grades were higher, but that's his own fault. Only failed RE, which is a pity as it was a tiny class.

MrsHamlet · 24/08/2023 13:36

All reviews have to be requested through the school.
PE sounds like the NEA was moderated down.
I would strongly advise getting the scripts back first and getting someone In the centre who knows the paper and the standard to look at them first. Reviews are not looking for extra marks and the vast majority do not change.

Lannielou · 24/08/2023 13:39

My amazing boy got an 8, 7, 3 6's, 3 5's, a P2 and a 2 in French. Off to 6th form to do a levels. All exams sat whilst living in a homeless hostel. I'm so proud of him

LighthouseCat · 24/08/2023 13:39

Huge relief and happiness here. Seven 9s, two 8s and a 6. The 6 (English Literature) is a surprise but not in an A-level subject. Lots seemed to get unexpected results in English lit at DD's school

I would talk to the school and talk through her scores on individual papers. If coursework has been downgraded significantly in external moderation, I would be concerned by that- it usually means an issue with over-grading across the board by a department.
A 3 in English is poor and unless it improves on a re-mark, she will have to re-sit. If it was just two marks off a 4 , it will already have been checked at the board but it's still worth talking to the school to see if they can pinpoint a particular paper that was the issue.
What did she get in English Lit and in maths?

I hope you don't mind me saying this but those results are not the results of an academic A level candidate. GCSE results are just a stepping stone but so much of A level requires good learning skills and cross-curricular skills. I would worry that she will struggle at A level. Most schools ask for at least 6s and often 7s or above in A level subjects, plus 6s in maths and English- that's because A levels are a big jump and require a more academic approach. You say she worked really hard which is worrying as it's not as if she wasn't trying her best. It can be very stressful for children who struggle with A levels. Even the brightest find them very different and challenging.

Sometimes, children need a bit more time to develop academically. She might be better off doing a vocational course plus one A level at first and picking up another next year. It would mean a 3 year college plan but might benefit her longer-term. If the A level was not her thing she could then pick up further vocational instead of another one or two A levels.

ChimneyPotter · 24/08/2023 13:50

DS had a real mixed bag - initially extremely happy but I think that's because it was relief as he was so worried, now the reality is setting in. None of it really makes much sense. He's very science-focussed - has wanted to be an engineer (like his dad) for years.

He got an 87 in Science and 7 in Maths, but then a 3 in Engineering and a U in Further Maths! We're pretty stumped by it and trying to laugh those ones off a bit and focus on the strong ones, but as the hours go on he's more and more upset as the Engineering is what he wants to do. He had 3 teachers in 2 years on it, and was not set any revision guidance or past papers like he was for everything else. He moaned about this at the time but I thought it was just excuse making - I was never 'set' revision in my day! - but it clearly had an impact so I'm pretty cross with the school really!

Grrr. I just feel he could have done so much better!!

I have heard this too. Dd got a 6 and was thought to be on course for a 7. Her boyfriend got a 5 I think he wants to do English A level so may be a problem.

Fluffycloudsfloatinginthesky · 24/08/2023 13:56

@LighthouseCat

My daughter and her friends all got lowish scores for paper one (based on mocks) - their theory is the questions were quite simple and therefore you had to do an amazing job to get the top marks.

Namechange423 · 24/08/2023 14:03

I agree @Enriquetta
My sister that got average grades is much happier than I am. I’m an anxious perfectionist and he is very much like me.

Maverick197 · 24/08/2023 14:06

Congrats to all who got their results! My dd got better grades than expected, she did very sporadic revision and found the exam stress too much to bear at times. She got all 6s with one 5 and a 9. She secured a place at her 1st choice 6th form which is a huge relief as it is also closest to us and many of her friends are going there. However, she didn't get a high enough mark to study maths A-level, she got a 6 and needed a 7, so it's back to the drawing board regarding A-level choices.

Looking at her point score, she was 2 or 3 points off the higher mark in 3 subjects, but we wont ask for re-scoring as a higher score wouldn't impact her choices.

HippyChickMama · 24/08/2023 14:12

Ds got what he needed to get into his chosen A levels and some way better than predicted too. I'm so proud of him and so happy. Well done to all of your dc for getting through the exams, I hope they all find their path to the next stage, whether it be straight or a little bit of a detour

That’s amazing! You must be so proud. Hope you can move on from there soon, if not already.

Mixed results but mostly what expected. He has what he needs for his subject choices for sixth form but hasn't got the grade for English so we're waiting to hear whether he has got a place or not. We've had an incredibly challenging year and I'm hoping they will take that into account and as his required subject results are excellent.

School have confirmed his place! What a relief!

Very proud 0f my son, today ,six months i he was fighting for his life in intensive care ,after collspsong suddenly with diabetic Ketoacidosis,( wee had no idea he had diabetes)after, further, complications,he spent,a month iin hospital, and misseda huge amount,of school,
Hes picked up his results this morning and got enough to do the course he wanted ,which is a massive acheivement in view of the circumstsnces.

That's amazing!

Andontothenextproblem · 24/08/2023 14:28

Phew, we are happy here!!

A strong pass in maths an 8 in English language and 8’s & 9’s in her A level choices so thankfully no worries about getting into 6th form.

The only slight niggle is she is one mark off an 9 for Art so thinking we might have remarked.

Can anyone tell me how we start that process?

spiderlight · 24/08/2023 14:32

@x2boys and @Lannielou - what fantastic achievements under incredibly difficult circumstances. I hope your DC are very, very proud of themselves.

kkneat · 24/08/2023 14:39

My DD did well, quite a mixed bag lost motivation when it came to the real study time. She got a 5 in English Language AQA & where it says mark equivalent there’s a blank. She got an 8 In English literature & English has always been her best subject. College she wanted to go to won’t let her do English literature A’levels as she needed to have got a 6 in both minimum. She said she found English language papers fine. I’ve emailed school to get a remark? Anyone else’s child got a much lower mark than expected in AQA English Language? Is there anything else she can do other than ask school to request a remark?

Honeylemonandginger · 24/08/2023 14:51

8’s, 7’s and 3 6’s here. Dd is pleased and so am I . Congratulations to all who got their results today and wishing the very best to those who were left disappointed.
