4 at grade 7, 5 at grade 6 and one 5 in the one subject they though they would DEFINTELY fail. Not naturally academic but very hard working and now everything needed to move on, I’m so proud.

It’s been a very long journey for us all, parents and kids, well done to all regardless of results for persevering on the long slog.

whojamaflip · 24/08/2023 11:23

Just spoken to the college and it's unlikely DS will be accepted on his course with his results 😩

All alternative courses are over subscribed so no chance of moving sideways.

No other college in the area offering similar courses so can't even look elsewhere.

College can do nothing until he's been formally rejected so it's a waiting game for now.

Well done to those dc who achieved what they needed for their next steps and good luck with their next chapters

minisnowballs · 24/08/2023 11:23

Delighted with all 7s 8s and a 9 here. Unexpectedly high in the sciences and low in English (which she wants for A-Level). Biology being remarked as one mark off an 8...

She worked so hard for this.

We've decided dogs don't care if you have GCSEs in Maths & English (or anything else either).

Totally. (And also no one ever asks past a certain point)

ladybee2 · 24/08/2023 11:29

DS is pleased with 9's, 8's and 7's.
Phew! Into sixth form for A- levels.

Changes17 · 24/08/2023 11:30

DS very happy with his results. Glad we can all relax now!

PennywisePoundFoolish · 24/08/2023 11:30

I ended up taking DS2 up to the school. The queue to speak to staff was huge, the hall was muggy amd loud.

Fortunately a teacher who knows of DS2s struggles came and spoke to us, and managed to get a 6th form staff to speak to us briefly . They're ringing me once they've finished with pupils there. They weren't expecting so many to arrive at 9am, which surprised me tbh.

It seems likely he won't be able to do chemistry, he's really not keen on physics which he got the better result in. Having looked at the grad boundaries, he was 6 off a 6, so not worth remarking

We'll just have to see what their offer is, as there will be timetable logistics that need to be looked at.

I've ordered food from his favourite place as he's not one for going out anywhere.

That’s a tricky situation. I wonder if spaces might appear over the next two weeks? I know of a few students (my DC included) who will be releasing a college place today. Plus from what I know of kids in the years above, there is almost always lots of movement in the first couple of weeks of term, with people switching courses, institutions or deciding to give college a miss entirely, creating spaces for people to move into. Fingers crossed.

I'm sorry that sounds very stressful. I hope you don't have to wait too long to hear from the college on what they can offer.

She worked so hard for this.

My daughter was also unexpectedly high in science. Honestly not sure how as she has never been anywhere near that at any point. She must have got lucky with questions.

VioletVeeVee · 24/08/2023 11:38

Can anyone tell me what a combined science result 43 - pt.3.5 means please.

PennywisePoundFoolish · 24/08/2023 11:39

The school has emailed yo say he can do maths, Further maths and biology but not chemistry. They've offered Media, Psychology or Business Studies.
None of those suit DS2 at all.

TheBucktoothedGirlFromLuxembourg · 24/08/2023 11:40

All good here too. Off to Nando's with his mates later.

LadyShimura · 24/08/2023 11:41

I'm waiting anxiously for the school to email me back.

I know she'll have to do her resits in Maths and English but I dont know what else.

VioletVeeVee · 24/08/2023 11:38

@VioletVeeVee, I am guessing that it is 4/3. Two grades are awarded for combined science (it is 'worth' 2 GCSE grades), so I expect it is a grade 3 and grade 4. They usually present it with a line in between the two grades, so I am not certain

quietlyspoken08 · 24/08/2023 11:45

Do you get a breakdown of how many marks they got? My son has rung with his results and has done well in everything but has threes in both chemistry and physics. He didn't mention it showing a breakdown of the marks but I would be interested to see how close he was to a pass and see if it is worth asking for a remark.

Madcats · 24/08/2023 11:48

I've just seen a tweet from Paul Lewis (Moneybox Radio 4) reminding parents that they need to tell HMRC if their child is staying on at school/college (12+ hours/week) and still want to get Child Benefit:
https://www.tax.service.gov.uk/child-benefit/staying-in-education/payments-extended

We're pleasantly surprised with DD's GCSE results (particularly after the press reports this week).

Best of luck for those hoping to get to college, awaiting confirmation of places.

DD passed everything, so I am incredibly proud of her, she is devastated as she did not get the 6 in Sciences that she needed for her options ( a few marks away from the boundary, so not worth a remark).
Unfortunately, she did not get to speak to any of the heads of year, and the staff member she ended up talking to didn't seem to be able to provide her with much information and just told her to email. She has sent an email to the department head and heads of year hopefully she will have a reply as i think she is finding the not knowing what her options are is more difficult.

DS1 did, he knows exactly how close he is to the boundaries!

@Merchantadventurer The D in that column refers to the essay piece he did prior to the exam. So it stands for distinction. DS got an M which I assume is Merit.

Thank you. It just states 43 with no line between so I’m unsure.

SlightlyJaded · 24/08/2023 11:55

@whojamaflip I'm really sorry. We've just had exactly the same nightmare with DD and ALevels. It's harsh.

Things will shuffle and shift and something will work out. Hang in there.

It's the spoken language endorsement, which is a non exam assessed presentation. Pass, merit or distinction.

PicnicBunny · 24/08/2023 11:56

Some 9s, 8s, and 7s here, and two 6 for History and English language and two 5s for Geography and English Lit.
Mixed emotions here.

But DS gets to do what he wanted Maths, Further Maths and Physics. Now lunch.

Thatsshallot1967 · 24/08/2023 11:59

VioletVeeVee my son got exact same combined science grade 5 years ago set out as '43' on exam slip. The exams officer confirmed it's two GCSEs so a grade 4 (pass) and a grade 3 (not quite a pass). His FE college counted the grade 4 as one of the five needed for his course.
