Well my DD get a 4-3 in combined science but got lower than 2 in everything else. Got a P endorsement grade in English Lang.

I really thought she'd do well, especially with an incentive.

Now I just feel like a shit mum.

That sounds tough for you both. I’m sure you’re not a shit mum, but it’s natural to feel disappointed and wondering what more we can do for our DC.

Were these unexpected results? And importantly, does this let her go on to do what she wants to do next?

mrsnjw · 24/08/2023 10:11

What's a p endorsement please?

LadyShimura · 24/08/2023 10:12

@GlitteringFeeling

She was predicted to get 2 and 3's at most of her subjects. She got more than expected in Science, but she did worse than expected in a lot of them.

TeenDivided · 24/08/2023 10:12

Maths (still) not passed. We knew it would be borderline as she only coped with 1hr in each of the 3 exams - she did well to actually attend and attempt them.
But somewhat heartbreaking all the same.

OvaHere · 24/08/2023 10:13

Well it's over finally. Mixed results as I thought. Got an 8 and 7 in his first two chosen a level subjects so all good there.

As feared Biology was a near miss. Needed a 6 got a 5. Unsure whether college will accept or need him to choose another subject.

Overall he's got the 3 6s needed for minimum entry.

Biggest shock was Eng Lit. Predicted a 7, got an 8 in mocks and came out with a 5 today. He can't understand that one because he thought he'd done well.

Conversely he managed a 6 in Eng Lang which is his weaker of the 2.

So go figure!

I think we're both happy that he's got into college even if it means one subject change. Could have been better but could have been worse. Looking to the future now. I think he will enjoy college and prefer only have 3 subjects to think about.

Thanks everyone for these threads. 😍

Any ideas in how/if they can apply to other 6th forms at this stage? DS has got mostly 5s, but a 4 in English. His choices at the sixth form he was offered a place in need a 5 in English, so those are out. They have very limited choices otherwise. There is another one locally which offer his choices, can they still (re)apply? Our local schools all apply via a single portal (MyChoice16).
Sorry, he's sent me his results but is not answering his phone so I'm trying to identify options for him.

Museya15 · 24/08/2023 10:15

My dd2 got 4 grade 4s and 3grade 5s. We are delighted, she has struggled academically so this is a huge achievement. Wants to study law but don't think that's likely now.

HappiDaze · 24/08/2023 10:16

DD passed them all but the grades were lower than she expected but good enough to still go into 6th form

Your not a shit mum some kids just don't do well in exams. My brother left school without a single Gcse he know has a degree and a very good job

Fourmagpies · 24/08/2023 10:18

Mixed results but mostly what expected. He has what he needs for his subject choices for sixth form but hasn't got the grade for English so we're waiting to hear whether he has got a place or not. We've had an incredibly challenging year and I'm hoping they will take that into account and as his required subject results are excellent.

That’s a shame. What does she want to do next? Can she still do that?

Check the webpages - and maybe call - but local college you can apply as late as October for this years courses though it will depend on places - DS school has sent a letter with results e-mail saying he could still go to their sixth form based on today results.

JuicyDrop · 24/08/2023 10:20

Just got off the phone with my younger brother.
He is diagnosed with dyspraxia and had a really hard time with school- nothing came easy to him and he was behind in most of his school years due to been unable to write properly and finding school work difficult.
He has done so well with his results- all 4’s, 5’s and a 6 in English literature which was way above predicted. He got a 3 in RE but that subject was forced upon him and he care for it.
So so proud of him. :)

jamimmi · 24/08/2023 10:20

Well results are in 9,8and 7 in the a level subjects she wants. 3 nines in total including the much fretted over chemistry! Only curved ball was a 5 in English lit. She worked hard is naturally academic so we are very proud, as we were with her brother 4 years ago who got 4& 5's but is now doing well at uni.

LadyShimura · 24/08/2023 10:22

@GlitteringFeeling

She can still go on to sixth form and do what she wanted.

It's just the disappointment of her not achieving what I think she can. I did appallingly at my GSCE's and didnt do much better at sixth form or college either, so I didnt want my DD to have the same, especially when she is smart, she just cant make that work for her.

Rowgtfc72 · 24/08/2023 10:24

So dd got a 4 in maths, 6 in English. So not the 3s we thought. Only a 5 in music which was the highest mark in the school but she's seen the music teacher and he's spitting mad and will probably appeal. She got a 5 for engineering but a 9 for her coursework.
Her boss at her apprenticeship messaged her this morning to wish her luck, and ask for uniform sizes.
3 yr mechanics apprenticeship here she comes.

Well done to those that got the grades they needed to do what they wanted to do next.
And to those who didn't, remember gcses only prove what you can do on the day. You're more than the grades you achieve.
If there's something you want to do you'll always find a way.

Now to panic about dd going to Reading.

Sssudio · 24/08/2023 10:27

DD can't get her results for another 5 minutes, her boyfriend got 9s and 8s and she's set her own bar v high (needs 7s in Maths, Media, Combined Science) and has been poring over the grade boundaries this morning. Her cousin got 7s and 8s, so she's feeling the pressure (from no one but herself)

Fourcandlesx · 24/08/2023 10:27

@OvaHere Biology A level is really hard compared to GCSE so not a bad idea to explore other options. My son got an 8 at GCSE and a B at A level and he definitely wished he had chosen something else! It's a bit of a tactical game choosing the right subjects.

rogueone · 24/08/2023 10:30

Delighted over here as my DS got 8s and 9s

MargaretThursday · 24/08/2023 10:31

Ds has gone in.
I suggested he left his swimming bag here, so at least he has to come back before going off with his friends.
Fairly quiet set of students, none of the wild shrieking when dd1 got hers.

OvaHere · 24/08/2023 10:31

I agree. If they tell him he can do it I think he'll take it but honestly one of his back up choices might serve him better.

Although one of his back ups is Eng Lit and that was a shocker result today. Nowhere near his predicted or mock grade.

What will be will be. I'm trying to be chill about it all. It's not my choice or my life at the end of the day.

JudgeJ · 24/08/2023 10:36

Good luck to all your children! I'm very old and recall back then that we took a stamped addressed envelope into school before the end of term and our results were posted to us, no going to school to get them! However on the Thursday they were in the local newspaper so I remember walking down the avenue after I'd finished by holiday job and lots of neighbours, many of whom I didn't know, waving, giving me a thumbs up and one even came running out with a box of chocolates for me!

reluctantbrit · 24/08/2023 10:36

DD somehow got 6 and 7 in English, she failed it in February mocks and was told to look at alternatives to 6th form.
Drama is a bit disappointing but still good enough to do it at A-Level.
Overall positive surprises.

She had a huge adrenaline dump when she came out and is still shell-shocked.

I am so relieved it's over and we can look forward. I don't want a repeat of the last 2 years.

LadyShimura · 24/08/2023 10:38

Reading the letter from sixth form previously, I'm not sure my DD will be able to do the course she wants to do. I dont think she meets the requirements for an A level.

whojamaflip · 24/08/2023 10:41

Does anyone know if a level 1 pass in a btec or cnat counts as a pass at GCSE?

DS has an offer for college of 5 GCSE passes but has only level 4s in combined science and maths which counts as 3 out of the 5. Everything else was 2s and 3s apart from his btec which was P1 and his cnat which was D1.

Have submitted his results to college and they have said if he achieved his conditional results he will have his place confirmed in the next couple of days otherwise if he has missed it he won't head until the start of September!

Just trying to work out if we need to look at alternatives 🤷‍♀️
