@silvermic yes you're right. Spoken not written. But doesn't affect overall grade afaik

SlightlyJaded · 24/08/2023 12:01

Has anyone managed to log onto applicaa yet? Just keep getting Gateway timed out.

PennywisePoundFoolish · 24/08/2023 12:01

Having queried why Physics wasn't an option, they have now said he can do that. So that's sorted and he staying there. I'm not a fan of the school but hopefully the 6th form experience will be better than the previous 5 years(!)

EmmaStone · 24/08/2023 12:08

Very relieved here, 8 passes, mostly 5s, but an unexpected 7 in Eng Lit. 1 mark off a pass in the dreaded OCR Comp Sci, so checking in with school to see if they think it's worth asking for a re-mark.

Had A Levels last week which was much more traumatic (although ultimately, DD got what she wanted, so all good).

Well done to all others getting their results, and sending thoughts for those who have been disappointed. They will all find the right path for them.

Thatsshallot1967 · 24/08/2023 11:59

VioletVeeVee my son got exact same combined science grade 5 years ago set out as '43' on exam slip. The exams officer confirmed it's two GCSEs so a grade 4 (pass) and a grade 3 (not quite a pass). His FE college counted the grade 4 as one of the five needed for his course.

Thank you! I’m proud of him if that’s the case as he missed most of Y10 and 11 with MH.

It’s confusing though. We’re off to college this afternoon so will see if they confirm the same.

Thatsshallot1967 · 24/08/2023 12:14

VioletVeeVee well done him, a great achievement. Hope he's really proud of himself! Good luck with college.

PhotoDad · 24/08/2023 12:23

DS very pleased with 7s, 8s, and 9s. He's in a big sporting competition for the next three days and is training today, but we'll celebrate this evening!

Sixgeese · 24/08/2023 12:25

We are happy with the grades DD got, she has dyslexia but worked really hard, doing almost every past paper she could get her hands on and writing out all her notes on 1000s of flash cards to help her with the spellings that she was struggling with.

She was so worried that she wouldn't get English but....

She got 5s for both the English exams (and 5 last year for RS before she was assessed by the SENDCO and given extra time)

But apart from her 7 6 in Combined Science, she got 7s in all the rest including the Computer Science OCR paper

HairyMaclary · 24/08/2023 12:28

Phew - finally got to speak to DS, he did amazingly, 4x9 2x8 and 2 x7. One of the 7s in a subject he wanted to take for A level though so that threw him a bit. He spoke to school and they are happy for him to take it so that’s good.

After A levels and now this I feel I can finally relax!

Judellie · 24/08/2023 12:28

My DD did really well, bless her, especially in French and ecstatic she passed Maths and can leave it behind as she goes into Sixth Form for A levels. She also worked really hard with her older brother, who has ASD, and they've managed to get his grade up from a 1 to a 2 so delighted with that as didn't expect it.

I've just seen a tweet from Paul Lewis (Moneybox Radio 4) reminding parents that they need to tell HMRC if their child is staying on at school/college (12+ hours/week) and still want to get Child Benefit:
https://www.tax.service.gov.uk/child-benefit/staying-in-education/payments-extended

We're pleasantly surprised with DD's GCSE results (particularly after the press reports this week).

Best of luck for those hoping to get to college, awaiting confirmation of places.

I've had several communications from HMRC about this but don't claim child benefit (as not eligible). But the communication reads as if I do. I'm wondering if someone else is siphoning off my benefit...

Has this happened to anyone else?

Meanwhile DS2's GCSE results were pretty much as expected by me......but were a slight disappointment to DS!

BelCantox · 24/08/2023 12:29

We home ed - both kids got passes in their first GCSE subjects, they'll take more GCSE's next year.

As an aside, because it's not so known in the wider (non home ed!) world, from what people have said to me over the years, any child/young person can retake an exam as an independent candidate at an exam centre.

You do have to find one near you, and you do have to pay (fees vary, mostly around £150 - £200), but it's worth bearing in mind.

Huge congratulations to all students for the efforts they've made - it's a tough time!

Fluffycloudsfloatinginthesky · 24/08/2023 12:33

@MidLifeCrisis007

I am
Over threshold but am still registered as having eligibility - I still had to confirm my dd was staying in education.

Remember remarks aren't remarks any more, they are reviews of marking.
If the senior examiner thinks the original marking was reasonable within the mark scheme then they don't change.

This. Someone who knows the mark scheme and the standard for this series should look over any papers that are being considered for review before you pay for it.

MargaretThursday · 24/08/2023 12:40

Phew mostly 5s and 6s, and a 7 and a L2D.
He got 6 in Eng lang, which was the only concern for a fail.

MrsHamlet · 24/08/2023 12:41

Merchantadventurer · 24/08/2023 09:58

DS got what needed and an unexpected 8 in chemistry which he hated and found hard!

A quick question though. On his English results his literature shows the grade and raw score but English language only shows the grade (8) and it has a D near ish to to the raw score column (but no raw score). Does anyone know why?

The D is distinction in the speaking element.
It's because of the way the data is exported from the system - you'll need to contact the school for the raw score,

I would imagine this is a left hand (knows you have a child of the right age) and a right hand (knows your salary is too high) not joining up issue!!

Also - if you had changed to a lower paying job, you might welcome the notification!

MrsBeetlejuice · 24/08/2023 12:52

Mixed bag over here. 3 in maths, which wr kind of expected, but still disappointed as she's put so much into this and had extra (very expensive) tuition. Also, 7, 6 and a couple of 5's and 4's.

Also, a very disappointing L2P in drama which is much lower than predicted and probably not enough to get her through, as I don't believe that equates to a 5, which is what she needs to apply.

Trying to remain positive and we have of course congratulated her, but she's so disappointed. There's nowhere else she wants to go.

Congratulations to all your dc who got what they needed.

rainydogday · 24/08/2023 12:56

Mixed bag here. Passed dreaded maths which was the big worry. But got 5's in English Lang and Geography which she wanted to study at A level....it may mean back to the drawing board as 6th form want 6's

Alexandra1991 · 24/08/2023 12:57

I don't even know why I am reading this thread as my DD is only in nursery, but well done to all your DCs on their results! I remember GCSE results day and I was so nervous!

Namechange423 · 24/08/2023 12:58

Well done to all your DC! They have all done so well.

Nephew absolutely distraught. 11 9s and 1 8. The subject teacher said they’re “disappointed” in his grade. I am so angry they’ve said that and held him to such high standards.

He has ADHD and autism and is very similar to I was when I took my GCSEs 8 years ago. I went to an awful school and ended up doing too many AS levels as they didn’t know what they were doing and I went along with it. Resulted in A*ABC at A level and I missed my grade needed for uni as a result.

Really don’t know what to say to him to make it better as he’s done brilliantly but can’t help focus on the 8. I wish they hadn’t changed to the numerical grades. I wish the school didn’t put so much pressure on him. My own ADHD really started affecting me at A level stage so I’m really worried about him going forward.

Sister was a very average student Bs and Cs at GCSE so she can’t understand why he isn’t happy.

Congratulations to everybody's wonderful children, who are so much more than a set of results.

DC got straight 9s and is overjoyed but has severe mental health issues, they would have been like your nephew if they'd got just one 8. Doesn't bode well for A levels, I'm dreading the angst of the next two years, holding themself to the highest standards. Of course I am proud but I honestly so much rather would have a child with lower grade who was happy in itself.

MrsBeetlejuice · 24/08/2023 13:11

Oh and well done to all who simply gave it their all!

x2boys · 24/08/2023 13:11

Very proud 0f my son, today ,six months i he was fighting for his life in intensive care ,after collspsong suddenly with diabetic Ketoacidosis,( wee had no idea he had diabetes)after, further, complications,he spent,a month iin hospital, and misseda huge amount,of school,
Hes picked up his results this morning and got enough to do the course he wanted ,which is a massive acheivement in view of the circumstsnces.

Postapocalypticcowgirl · 24/08/2023 13:11

Congratulations to all those who got the results they needed, and I'm sorry for those who haven't quite got what they wanted for the next step.

Hopefully there will be some movement today and tomorrow, and everyone will end up with what they need :)
