Does anyone have a DD with an academic scholarship at Surbiton High? We’re trying to understand whether the scholar’s programme adds real value to the senior school experience.

We’re struggling to decide between an academic scholarship at SHS and an offer from GHS. We live in Surbiton, so logistically that would be easier, but we preferred GHS. My daughter is swayed by the kudos of the scholarship, but we’re not convinced that it will make much difference to her on a day to day basis? The brochure from the school mentioned scholar’s lunches, seminars, mentoring, but was fairly vague and we didn’t manage to get any more clarity on the offer holders day.

Being a scholar should give your DD more confidence and a bit more opportunities at the school. Equally important is whether you want your DD to spend a ton of extra hours on travel over the next five or seven years. Please bear in mind that weather can often be unpleasant. I believe your DD will do well at both schools anyway.

Seems everyone in this trend has applied for private and grammars. We are waiting for tomorrow’s news as my daughter will go to state school. Crossing fingers for a Wallington offer.
Anyone else?
1 more day!

We are fast approaching the 1000 messages mark, when (as per Mumsnet system) the thread will not accept more posts.
As in previous occasions / iterations of the thread, I will keep an eye on it and open a continuation thread (the 7th one!), posting the links for ease of reference.

Yes we still have Wallington grammar in the mix. Releasing offers for reeds and Claremont, leaving KGS and state options. It's such a difficult decision for us. It is so expensive at private but wallington is a 40 min journey and I think will offer less extra curricular etc etc too.

Does anyone know when is LEH's deadline for accepting offers? Just curious since my DD is in the waiting list and admission office had said nothing to expect until the end of acceptance/reject process! Many thanks in advance,

LEH deadline is 2nd March, 12 noon. I think you will hear from them very soon now. All the best!

99I · 28/02/2023 12:41

I know about a dozen boys holding indie offers waiting on tiffin results. There will be movement.

Thanks for posting this. Very helpful as we are considering SHS with academic scholarship.

Thank you so much for the details! Like a few others here, we are also torn between SHS with a scholarship and GHS while living much closer to SHS. The details make our decision easier.

Just venting really but also offering a different perspective on one of the schools who have been praised here during their admissions process (in the UK at least).

We applied from abroad and have had to chase them all the way through the process, multiple times, not receiving any communication in line with stated timelines on their website for Y7.

Our DC was interviewed on 2nd February when the school has sent out all the offer on 1st February. On top of that, the interviewer has asked him about his sister who sadly died on 2nd December last year which was at all unprofessional as we are still waiting to start bereavement counselling.

After nearly 4 weeks of waiting for the outcome letter, we have received a generic email today from them reminding us to make a decision on our offer and then finally a real person email saying they won't be offering.

Not impressed doesn't quite cover it. I am deeply disappointed in CFC and their admission process in our case. I have heard good things about the school and I hope it is true but we will not be applying for any other children due to our experience.

Taurus23 · 28/02/2023 21:24

@knopka you’re right to be appalled at this experience. It’s not that hard to get right and the interviewer bringing up a very personal matter is not appropriate at all. I’m so very sorry for your loss. It seems as though your son has done very well in the most difficult of circumstances.

Not in the same league at all but we had an interviewer at LEH say he was not a fan of Tiffins in my DD’s interview and proceeded to slate it when asked which other schools she was applying to. Bit weird I thought.

knopka · 28/02/2023 21:31

@Taurus23 honestly we are shocked. I would have preferred that they asked us as parents and not out DC. I don't think he was also prepared for the questions.

Our experience with Emanuel was exactly the opposite which was a relief for us as they offered both of our DCs places.

Taurus23 · 28/02/2023 21:39

@knopka Emmanuel is a highly sought after option in our primary school. Congratulations to your boys.

QuiteAJourney · 28/02/2023 22:12

@knopka I am not surprised that you are astonished - absolutely appalling behaviour! If you can summon the energy, I would encourage to provide feedback directly to the HM (sometimes I think that HMs are far too oblivious of the doings of admissions and it shows).
Congratulations on the offers from Emanuel - a very well regarded and in-demand school. Wishing your DC all the best there.

Good luck everyone on making final decisions. And good luck to those on the waitlist! Today people find out about state options, so the movement will start happening soon on the WLs.

SamPoodle123 · 01/03/2023 11:35

And just curious, for those waiting to hear from Tiffans, do they send you an email directly, or do you get notified when the secondary emails come out to all from the eadmissions?

swgeek · 01/03/2023 11:37

@SamPoodle123 I think it is eadmissions at 5pm and after, so wouldn't expect movement until tomorrow at the earliest.

It's on the edmissions. You get a letter/email from the school as well but not sure if the same day or next day.

momomamiko · 01/03/2023 16:43

Is there anyone on the thread who applied to Wellington College 13+ this round or in the last couple years?

IODH2023 · 01/03/2023 17:10

Hi All, does Tiffin also send an email? on our e-admission is stated my DC got a place in one of the state schools but nothing about Tiffin, so I should
assume no offer for Tiffin?

Tiffin is a state school so if you got a place it would show on eadmissions. You should receive a letter/ email in next few days telling you the score and wait list place etc.

Daydreamscometrue · 01/03/2023 17:13

Unless you didn't put Tiffin first?
