Thread 8 Carry on Corona Cohort: GAV give us the CAG?

OrangeCinnamon1 · 16/08/2020 09:10

Welcome all to the 8th Thread for this year's GCSE cohort the Corona Cohort!

Some of us have been here since I started first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. It is hoped this will continue. Going forward we intend to stay in secondary so any new threads should have 'GCSE Summer 2020 Thread # : Carry on Corona Cohort' in title just to make it easier to find.

From now on our DS/DD may go down various paths so we decided not to be exclusionary and stay right here in Secondary until HQ chuck us Grin
At this precise moment in time we are awaiting GCSE results that seem to have been produced by an algorithm that also takes very little account of Teacher Centre Assessed Grades. There is an appeal process but it was changed yesterday to include mock results and coursework, then taken down again for review.
Trying to protect our young people's mental health.during this shit show , which the government claims is their priority...when they talk about wanting students back in schools/college in September...

Thanks cinnamon.

lilgreen · 16/08/2020 09:20

Thanks

estherfrewen · 16/08/2020 09:21

Thanks for the new thread. I have nothing else in my life now except GCSEs and this board. Seems a long time since joining the starting primary school thread... !

Tumbleton · 16/08/2020 09:23

Thank you for the new thread OrangeCinnamon1

I've been watching the A-level debacle with sympathy for those affected and increasing horror at the unfairness of it.

I think DS will meet the entry requirements to stay on for the sixth form, but possibly not for A-level Maths, which he would need for the STEM degree course he hopes to do.

cheninblanc · 16/08/2020 09:25

Thanks, we are dreading Thursday. My daughter is a solid 5 in all subjects a down grade of all could be a fail across the board. Gutted because I know her teacher assessments would give her a 5

mummabear74 · 16/08/2020 09:29

Thank you @OrangeCinnamon1

Mocks would be a disaster here. They were taken last November when courses were incomplete (finished in lockdown) and in Maths a huge cohort knew they were going to do last years GCSE paper and it was being circulated with the answers. Our DD decided she wanted to use the mock as a test to show her weaknesses rather than cheat to get an inflated figure. It's haunting me now knowing those that took advantage of the situation may be able to use this to their advantage again.

desertcoffeeyoga · 16/08/2020 09:34

Thank you ! Feel like normal family life is on hold till they sort this shit show out but so grateful for the support here ! shuffles off to join Twitter

BackInTime · 16/08/2020 09:34

@mummabear74 Similar situation here, although exams were sat in 'exam conditions' many students had worked out what papers would be used or had access to locked papers on exam board websites. I encouraged DD not to participate in paper sharing to get a true mock exam experience and grade. More fool me.

desertcoffeeyoga · 16/08/2020 09:38

Just a few points to add from the last thread :
Gavin Williamson was fired as Defence Minister for lying.
Chief Regulator of Ofqual Sally Collier has NO experience in examinations- she is from a procurement background.
But it is the judgment of teachers that is being questioned not whether these are the best people the guide this process.

Silverhill · 16/08/2020 09:39

Thank you OrangeCinnamon1 for starting the new thread.

At this point I feel resigned to the outcome that DD will not get the grades she is capable of, but she really wants to stay on for sixth form and be able to study the subjects she is interested in at A-level.

You may remember that DD has been unwell for most of Y11 (her attendance in spring term was

Alsoplayspiccolo · 16/08/2020 09:39

Thanks, Orange.
Who knew you’d be starting another thread in the same week, and before results have even come out?!!

When the exams were cancelled, DD was heartbroken, and I was heartbroken for her; she has SEN and has worked so hard to overcome her difficulties, and was just coming into her own.
The government reassured us that all would be well, others suggested that Ofqual’s assessment process would be the best possible alternative, given the circumstances...so I cannot believe what an absolute shambolic joke we find ourselves in, 5 months later and 4 days before “results” day. 🤬

FlyingPandas · 16/08/2020 09:41

Thank you for the new thread @OrangeCinnamon1

Dreading Thursday too and like others spending too much time on phone obsessing over GCSEs.

Do love this thread though. Sensible and supportive and informative. Thank you all!

MirandaWest · 16/08/2020 09:42

Morning. Am glad DS (and DD) are at their dad’s house until Wednesday as I’m not sure how well I’d keep my worries from them.

This is so much of a complete shit show. Urgh.

neutralintelligence · 16/08/2020 09:52

Great new thread title @OrangeCinnamon1

ealingwestmum · 16/08/2020 09:53

Thank you Orange for new thread. It is just so surreal to see this level of total incompetence play out daily. No sooner had I screenshot Monkey’s DS’s wonderful Rock Paper Scissors it’s all back on hold.

DD’s school head has been very vocal. It’s a high performing school but is heavily community involved with all school sectors so it’s not just voicing from school’s perspective. The results will not affect DD in her next stage, other than a bruised ego on possible downgrades but there is also the survival syndrome feeling for those who have not faired well in A levels and this week’s GCSEs, given that they now know how the calculation will work over 2 year’s data.

BackInTime · 16/08/2020 09:54

What we need to remember is that this government are going to do their best to shut down this story by releasing other news (French holiday quarantine and now the abolishment of PHE) there will something else around GCSE day. This is what the did with the Cummings Barnard Castle fiasco until it went away. We must keep the pressure on via Twitter local MPs and any other means so that the media and government can not drop this story.

Northumberlandlass · 16/08/2020 09:56

Thank you @OrangeCinnamon1

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 16/08/2020 09:57

Did we get through a whole other thread while I wasn’t looking this weekend?

mummabear74 · 16/08/2020 10:00

@BackInTime you are so right. I have emailed my local MP twice already and am happy to do so every day.

Northumberlandlass · 16/08/2020 10:01

The anger has needed an outlet @JustHereWithMyPopcorn 😤

Janie74 · 16/08/2020 10:07

Thank you for the new thread @OrangeCinnamon1

My MP is also getting regular emails @mummabear74 - lets keep the pressure on. Mine is a Tory lap dog so I’m not expecting miracles but I am quite happy to keep sending him emails. If he fails to respond (which he has so far) I shall find out how to complain about him.

boredboredboredboredbored · 16/08/2020 10:09

My Dd is due to get results Thursday too. She's a grafter and has put so much emphasis on her results I know she's going to be gutted if she doesn't get what she's been expecting. I'm joining in with the anger felt at this process, it's a disaster!

OrangeCinnamon1 · 16/08/2020 10:11

I can't take credit for title am afraid will have to look and see who came up as has been so busy

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 16/08/2020 10:12

@Northumberlandlass fair play, I’ve spent most of yesterday raging on Twitter. I”m getting more and more anxious about Thursday.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 16/08/2020 10:15

Do people think that if your child is staying on for sixth form that the school will stick with their own CAGs if the ‘results’ don’t come out in the students favour for entry?
