Thread 8 Carry on Corona Cohort: GAV give us the CAG?

OrangeCinnamon1 · 16/08/2020 09:10

Welcome all to the 8th Thread for this year's GCSE cohort the Corona Cohort!

Some of us have been here since I started first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. It is hoped this will continue. Going forward we intend to stay in secondary so any new threads should have 'GCSE Summer 2020 Thread # : Carry on Corona Cohort' in title just to make it easier to find.

From now on our DS/DD may go down various paths so we decided not to be exclusionary and stay right here in Secondary until HQ chuck us Grin
At this precise moment in time we are awaiting GCSE results that seem to have been produced by an algorithm that also takes very little account of Teacher Centre Assessed Grades. There is an appeal process but it was changed yesterday to include mock results and coursework, then taken down again for review.
Trying to protect our young people's mental health.during this shit show , which the government claims is their priority...when they talk about wanting students back in schools/college in September...

first ever thread

@Ant1966 😂 good description in that thread of the govt "firing results at random into the cohort while screaming 'don't worry, there's no grade inflation!'"

So sorry Still Flowers

Loving these titles. Today is certainly a much better day - so far!!

Northumberlandlass · 18/08/2020 12:02

Brilliant title suggestions! Can’t believe we’ll be into 9!!

AWanderingMinstrel · 18/08/2020 12:10

Feeling title envy- Im just not clever enough!

Monkey2001 · 18/08/2020 12:12

Loving the title debate and Govt's Atrocious Variations is brilliant! Also thoroughly recommend the HEPI post.

The only reason it might be appropriate to use calculated GAVs is where SLT restrained the CAGs enough to make them much lower than other centres. Most upgrades will just be random.

I agree that if a school had reasonable CAGs, it should just be those which are used, but I doubt that anybody should just be using GAVs!

Ant1966 · 18/08/2020 12:12

@piggy. LOL Dont worry about your stray 'C'; I've run the whole of the word through the Govts algorithm and it's improved it no end; as I'm sure we'll all agree: SapurUUGifrbgilistibesapulidobiobs

AnneOfCleavage

I don't think so.
The school gave them the chance to have the result the day it came out, so dd emailed for hers.
I fairness the 7/6 was hugely inflated, no way is she a 7/6 in English.
She laughed, her friends laughed and so did we. It seemed so far fetched.
Then at 9.30 her teacher emailed to say that Cambridge had now decided to follow suit out of fairness and she was downgraded to 5/5.
It is more realistic, but she believes it's out for Eng Lit which she is better at and was definitely handing in work graded at 6.
I don't know if she has any chance to redress this, but I don't think she's bothered tbh.

Monkey2001 · 18/08/2020 12:15

@Devlesko it sounds like your DD has a good sense of the ridiculous. Maybe you should frame the 7/6 certificate and put in on the wall in the toilet as a reminder of an adventure through the looking glass in the surreal year of 2020!

So wish there was a "like" button. Laughed out loud!

@LinzerTorte thank you for that, that’s a weight off my mind!

How quickly has this thread filled up! Loving the new title Grin

Confusedbutheyho · 18/08/2020 12:56

Currently arguing with DH, please tell me I’m in the right (or not).

He’s saying only CAGS will be given to students. I’m saying they’ll be given the highest out of CAGS and moderated. Just looked at Ofqual statement which doesn’t specify it’ll only be A-level students getting the choice.

Confusedbutheyho · 18/08/2020 12:56

Talking about GCSE students ^

BarefootHippieChick · 18/08/2020 13:00

You are correct confused It's on the Prime Minister's official Twitter account

Confusedbutheyho · 18/08/2020 13:04

Fab! Thanks guys

Monkey2001 · 18/08/2020 13:15

I still think there is wriggle room. They have not specifically said whether GCSE students will see GAVs so don't be surprised if it is interpreted the other way.

Decorhate · 18/08/2020 14:52

Just back from the school I work in. No official communication yet about what is happening exactly on Thursday, either from the exam boards or the Department. Apparently Twitter is the only way to get an inkling if what is going on. Obviously have the CAGs ready but it’s still not clear if the moderated grades are higher will they become the official grade.

Monkey2001 · 18/08/2020 15:04

@Decorhate are you happy with your CAGs? Hope SLT have not played too much with the data.
