Thread 8 Carry on Corona Cohort: GAV give us the CAG?

OrangeCinnamon1 · 16/08/2020 09:10

Welcome all to the 8th Thread for this year's GCSE cohort the Corona Cohort!

Some of us have been here since I started first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. It is hoped this will continue. Going forward we intend to stay in secondary so any new threads should have 'GCSE Summer 2020 Thread # : Carry on Corona Cohort' in title just to make it easier to find.

From now on our DS/DD may go down various paths so we decided not to be exclusionary and stay right here in Secondary until HQ chuck us Grin
At this precise moment in time we are awaiting GCSE results that seem to have been produced by an algorithm that also takes very little account of Teacher Centre Assessed Grades. There is an appeal process but it was changed yesterday to include mock results and coursework, then taken down again for review.
Trying to protect our young people's mental health.during this shit show , which the government claims is their priority...when they talk about wanting students back in schools/college in September...

first ever thread

Joining this thread from the last. So have Ofqual now said that the CAG’s can be used as a basis for appeal did I see? Everything is changing too quickly.

stoneysongs · 16/08/2020 10:16

Thanks for new thread @OrangeCinnamon1

What laughable developments will we see today I wonder.. only c. 94 hrs to go 😁

Anyone remember when this process was first announced and some people said it might even be fairer than exams? 😂😂😂😭

Yesterday I made a spreadsheet (standard way of making sense of the world) with DS's results from last year and what we are expecting this year. Just need to fill in Thursday's news now. He has done 3 whole GCSEs and 5 half GCSEs so far so it will be interesting to see what happens with those, a very direct comparison between his performance in the two halves of the syllabus.

Thinking about the tories' media management and wondering what they've got up their sleeve to replace the GCSE headlines next week... it has crossed my mind that we still don't know the identity of the MP arrested for rape, and he was released on bail, due to return mid August iirc. I know the timing should be far out of their control and not proud of that level of cynicism but I really wouldn't put anything past dickhead Dom and the dunderheads at this point.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 16/08/2020 10:16

The news this morning that I have seen on Twitter is that 97% of GCSEs will use the same algorithm and will ignore CAGs.

PaddingtonPaddington · 16/08/2020 10:17

Thanks for the new thread.

I too have become somewhat obsessed with it all.

The latest statement what does ‘in due course’ mean? We are all hanging on understanding the triple lock valid mock and I suspect what they put out previously didn’t match the government ‘guarantee’

FoolsAssassin · 16/08/2020 10:19

@BackInTime

What we need to remember is that this government are going to do their best to shut down this story by releasing other news (French holiday quarantine and now the abolishment of PHE) there will something else around GCSE day. This is what the did with the Cummings Barnard Castle fiasco until it went away. We must keep the pressure on via Twitter local MPs and any other means so that the media and government can not drop this story.
Absolutely spot on.

Thank you OrangeCinnamon. Last thread vanished in record time, suspect you will be doing another shortly!

Madhairday · 16/08/2020 10:23

Thank you for the new thread!

I am getting angrier and angrier about this. It is a complete shambles. For some reason I really trusted that the government would do their best for our kids within this whole crisis but no. I should have known better. It actually reminds me a little of the PIP and ESA processes in that they also are based around callous algorithms that end up penalising individuals - and in those cases the DWP don't listen to the experts, ie the actual doctors who know the patients, either - they just fill in their forms with this great rigidity which does not allow for any nuance, and thus sick people are denied benefits. It reminds me of that because yet again an algorithm is here employed to make the decisions which will have a significant impact on pupils and possibly wreck their chances if appeals are as shambolic as the rest of it.

I underestimated the pure spite and mean-spiritedness of those who would design a system that slavishly protects the national picture at the expense of the individual children concerned.

This! Angry

EasilyDelighted · 16/08/2020 10:25

Thank you @OrangeCinnamon1

neutralintelligence · 16/08/2020 10:26

LBC about to spend 2 hours talking about the exam shambles.
Anyone care to call in to counter the inevitable hordes of people who have not been directly affected, have not researched the reasons why this has happened, can't see how it is unfair and inaccurate to individual pupils, believe the lies in the media that there is 'grade inflation' due to teachers upping grades unrealistically.
I really hope someone who actually understands why this happened and why it is unfair calls in.

neutralintelligence · 16/08/2020 10:27

Don't think I can actually listen. I get so upset when people express an opinion that they have clearly not researched or have a vested interest in this year's cohort not getting the marks they deserve.

beenrumbled · 16/08/2020 10:29

Thank you for this ... DD waiting anxiously for her GCSE results now - DS1 got His Alevels, on Thursday - downgraded from an A* in one but potentially upgraded in another so on balance was happy and not planning on appealing, but several of his friends fell foul of the downgrades, though most now have been able to change courses/unis- there are no school 6th forms here so they all went to different Large colleges.

DS should have got AAB (might have got an additional A in Maths), got AAA.

DD really wants to do Maths Biology and English language, and needs an average of 7s to access a specific support group the college runs- so we are getting increasing anxious.

AWanderingMinstrel · 16/08/2020 10:31

ThanksOrangeCinnamon for the new thread! Lurking here with my bowl of Crunchynut! Then off to buy clothes for DS for sixth form (pretending that Rome isn’t burning around us)Smile

Paranoidmarvin · 16/08/2020 10:32

Thanks for the new thread. Though I’m not sure reading it is helping my blood pressure any

Northumberlandlass · 16/08/2020 10:33

Found LBC via Alexa! thanks for the tip off!

FoolsAssassin · 16/08/2020 10:35

Am also listening to LBC. Will be interesting to see how many will be in favour of CAGs at this point.

Shimy · 16/08/2020 10:36

Thanks for the brand new & shiny thread @OrangeCinnamon1.

OrangeCinnamon1 · 16/08/2020 10:38

@AWanderingMinstrel Dd seems to have been spending her clothing allowance (designed to force her to manage money) on jewellery making kits and tools, which she then sells on Depop, which she is awaiting profit for which she then reinvests... much as I admire this business plan it wasn't quite the point and I can see my credit card being flexed in future Hmm

Joining the new thread! I'v been taking a break from the news after it nearly tipped me over the edge in the run up to DS1 A Level results last weeks We're actually out of the country (in a hot non-quarantine one) so its easier to escape the unfolding mess.

Now we're through A Levels Thursday is starting to loom for DD though.

Shimy · 16/08/2020 10:40

Who was speaking on LBCif you were listening? I came intowards the end but the man made his point very well.

Goingcrazzy · 16/08/2020 10:41

Listening to LBC now, what a debacle. There has to be a U-turn. Thursday's round the corner...

neutralintelligence · 16/08/2020 10:42

I can't listen out of fear of the usual numpty (sometimes a very educated numpty, sometimes even the 'impartial' presenter) who says 'but we can't just give everyone an A'. Angry
That is not what has happened, not would ever happen, and not even what we want.
Way to discredit us though.

NOT down to teachers 'inflating' the grade
So sorry for failing to proofread.

Shimy · 16/08/2020 10:44

Glad to hear shadow education secretary is against the whole algorithm idea. Good good!

neutralintelligence · 16/08/2020 10:45

FGS someone else rewrite that post so it doesn't get used by the DailyFail.
