Thread 8 Carry on Corona Cohort: GAV give us the CAG?

OrangeCinnamon1 · 16/08/2020 09:10

Welcome all to the 8th Thread for this year's GCSE cohort the Corona Cohort!

Some of us have been here since I started first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. It is hoped this will continue. Going forward we intend to stay in secondary so any new threads should have 'GCSE Summer 2020 Thread # : Carry on Corona Cohort' in title just to make it easier to find.

From now on our DS/DD may go down various paths so we decided not to be exclusionary and stay right here in Secondary until HQ chuck us Grin
At this precise moment in time we are awaiting GCSE results that seem to have been produced by an algorithm that also takes very little account of Teacher Centre Assessed Grades. There is an appeal process but it was changed yesterday to include mock results and coursework, then taken down again for review.
Trying to protect our young people's mental health.during this shit show , which the government claims is their priority...when they talk about wanting students back in schools/college in September...

first ever thread

Don’t know Shimy.

DH just read out this morning’s offering from Sarah Vine, ‘ for the class of Covid 19, it just seem as if though the adults have left the building. It is hard to see how this opportunistic flip flopping, policy on the hoof approach to something so vital to their futures can feel like anything other than the final insult of a very difficult year...

Put bluntly parent and pupils may not forgive a Conservative Government that, In their eyes, has hung them out to dry’
She should have added Grandparents to that..

DH -‘ does she not realise it was her DH that scrapped all the assessments that would have made this situation better?’

neutralintelligence · 16/08/2020 10:47

Have asked MN to delete the post. FGS I hereby solemnly promise to proofread and preview my messages from this point on.

Shimy · 16/08/2020 10:52

@FoolsAssassin Us parents certainly won’t but more importantly this yrs exam cohort will remember when it’s their turn to vote.

FoolsAssassin · 16/08/2020 10:53

I like this LBC guy. Handled poor Fleur who went from C to U well then read out comment from Graham who left school at 15 and thinks they should get jobs and contribute, said ‘yes Graham and you used to get change from a farthing ‘ My blood pressure still under control Grin

neutralintelligence · 16/08/2020 10:56

It will leave a lasting impression on the pupil. We may tell them that it is not their own result. That it is a guess by a computer not based on their own past performance or predicted future performance.
But that will not stop it being internalised into their self-esteem, confidence and identity.
They will have to list it again and again in their qualifications.
If it stops them studying the A levels or Btecs they would have done or stops them applying to the universities or colleges they could have got into, it will change their life course forever.
No-one ever forgets stuff like that. Neither do their families.

FloweringFlowers · 16/08/2020 10:59

@AWanderingMinstrel we dare not even tempt fate by buying the uniform, it’s going to be a mad rush after results day, then if there’s appeals as well .... timing is so tight!!

Shimy · 16/08/2020 11:00

@neutralintelligence The fact the education secretary, government, Ofqual none of whom could see the effects of this is completely baffling.

EwwSprouts · 16/08/2020 11:01

@neutralintelligence I don't think future years should be moderated against any grade inflation this year. A small part may be due to teacher optimism but mainly it will be because nobody had a bad day eg hayfever, exam melt down etc. In reality if 2021 GCSE exam grades are moderated against 2019 the grade boundaries are likely to be significantly lowered given teaching time missed. It's either make 2020 an exception or create a chasm pre2020 and post2020 which affects those from earlier years in the jobs market cf essential maths & English grade.

neutralintelligence · 16/08/2020 11:06

@Shimy there are vested interests. They prioritised the interests of parties other than this years' individual GCSE and A level pupils.

neutralintelligence · 16/08/2020 11:10

@EwwSprouts
Yes, grade inflation actually does not need to be an issue for the following years of pupils who take the exams. Their exam moderation can be based on 2020 results and then it is all fair going forwards.

Changes in grading do happen in normal times anyway. The government were perfectly happy to change the A,B,C style of GCSE grades to 9,8,7 etc a couple of years ago, which led to a lack of comparability with previous years. This year's anomaly would actually quite minor compared that huge shift.

12% grade fluctuation from 2020 onwards has been given undue significance in a year of mass tragedy and a change to normality in every single area of life.

Shimy · 16/08/2020 11:14

I’m trying to remain calm. Haven’t engaged DS is any of this except when he has come to me to for confirmation all his work etc will forwards determine his gradesHmm. He asked if I noticed my voice sounded ever so high pitched when I mentioned the word ‘GCSE’ & ‘grades’Hmm.

BackInTime · 16/08/2020 11:14

DD was discussing this morning about all the time and effort teachers have put in for revision resources and extra lessons, the endless assemblies on working hard and achieving results, the extra time and money parents invested in tutors, buying revision guides and students doing things like DofE, volunteering and all the extracurricular stuff that is encouraged. It all counts for nothing for this cohort.

lilgreen · 16/08/2020 11:16

Just been for a long dog walk and chat with DD. Trying to get her to think long term. I’m tentatively thinking she might be ok with CAG as mocks in March and work good so we talked about whatever is in that envelope on Thursday not bring the final outcome.

neutralintelligence · 16/08/2020 11:16

@EwwSprouts Oh I missed your point about moderation against 2019 going forwards - also valid. Yes, the next few years of pupils will be given a lot of leeway in their grades for missed education anyway.

lilgreen · 16/08/2020 11:16

Being

Shimy · 16/08/2020 11:17

@neutralintelligence We must show them that this won’t go away until our dc gets the grades they deserve, fair grades reflecting their work. There’s actually a march today by students affected, just heard about it on the news. They thought people will just grumble a bit then get on with it in true British style but miscalculated.

EwwSprouts · 16/08/2020 11:18

@neutralintelligence I think we're on the same page on the subject as well as on here. Smile

RedskyAtnight · 16/08/2020 11:20

I pointed out to DS this morning that he will be old enough to vote in the next general election. Which is cold comfort because he feels powerless at the moment. But, yes, I hope those affected have long memories.

FloweringFlowers · 16/08/2020 11:25

I believe there are more marches arranged for next weekend, I will attend unless there is a quick u turn.

FoolsAssassin · 16/08/2020 11:31

Could we collate a list of marches across the country so people can see if there any local to them?

Decorhate · 16/08/2020 11:31

Trying not to fret too much about Thursday as I expect government policy will change several times in the next few days!

Ds should not have any issues with progressing to A Levels as he is staying at the same school & mainly doing subjects he has always done well in, so I assume the school would be sensible about it if the awarded grades are lower. I will be pretty cheesed off though if he is downgraded in the subjects where he has consistently got high marks over the years.

Silverhill · 16/08/2020 11:41

Do people think that if your child is staying on for sixth form that the school will stick with their own CAGs if the ‘results’ don’t come out in the students favour for entry?

That's what I'm hoping for DD's sake, although it won't help young people who are moving to a different setting which doesn't know them.

FoolsAssassin · 16/08/2020 11:43

That is what the rumour mill saying about DS’s school, he is moving though.

Wheresthebeach · 16/08/2020 11:43

So according to the Fail another uturn and cags now used for appeals not mocks? Can’t find it on bbc though. This is such a monumental shit show I just can’t get my head around the level.

Thanks for the new thread Orange.

Anyone else suffering with headaches?

Flump9 · 16/08/2020 11:43

Thanks to the poster who put how to get the schools past grades, although i'm not sure I should have looked! I was wondering why the results for Double Science were so low when it dawned on me that most of the high grade students would have done triple science in the past but this years cohort were strongly advised to take double not triple as students were getting lower grades in the triple than if they'd taken the double. So my dd who consistently got 8's and 9's in mocks and assessments and others in the class at the same level are probably going to be limited to 6's and 7's. She did do a mock in March and get 8/9 so hopefully that will be valid for appeal and I presume the school can appeal that this years cohort were different as less entered the triple.
