As the Tiffin results day looms, a second 2019 SW London grammars and indies thread

A new thread to avoid the doomsday scenario of running out of posts as envelopes are opened on Friday, waiting lists move (or don’t) and e-mails are opened on 1 March.

OP posts:
Geogra · 01/03/2019 10:10

Putney High are not expecting to offer waiting list places until early on Monday morning.

Lexi20 · 01/03/2019 10:17

Hi Georga - thanks for this. We are holding out for PHS place too! Was hoping we would hear today though!

Geogra · 01/03/2019 10:41

Have your 2 friends accepted Indigo? We still have class mates waiting for Wimbledon

1ndig0 · 01/03/2019 10:49

Geogra - one has declined, the other one probably will too.

I think the problem with last minute places is that people are likely to have become invested in other schools by then. For instance, one of the ones who was offered WHS this morning was literally in her way to drop off the KGS forms.

If it’s any help, PHS did send out an email yesterday, politely asking people to decline sooner rather than later if this was their intention, in the interests of the WL. Hopefully that would have spurred people on not to wait until the last minute.

Geogra · 01/03/2019 10:58

Thanks Indigo that’s helpful in understanding the big picture. I don’t see how waiting lists can change very much today if Nonsuch and Tiffin grammar results are not out until later this evening. Wimbledon and LEH both have a high number of applicants applying for grammars as well.

Out of interest how long were your friends given or decide on their waiting list offers? If until Monday the lists still might not move until after the week end.

1ndig0 · 01/03/2019 11:12

Geogra - I didn’t ask them that sorry. I do wonder if WHS may have slightly under-offered this year though, given that they’ve started going to the WL before the state offers are out? Did I hear they have a lot of building works planned for next year? Maybe they were worried about the prospect of a bulge year?

I do hope PHS comes through for you. Fingers crossed that others on the WL have already decided on elsewhere. This is the risk the schools run, I guess.

Bool · 01/03/2019 11:13

This shaking into place is so funny isn’t it. Exciting! The registrars I know are working this weekend.

Bool · 01/03/2019 11:14

I have my KGS forms filled out. Deadline is Wed for KGS so will hang out to see if PHS moves on Monday and if not will drop KGS forms in first thing Tues.

1ndig0 · 01/03/2019 11:26

They are both great schools Bool - either way, you can’t go wrong.

I applied to KGS six years ago for DS and really liked it, though we didn’t end up taking the place as we live nowhere near Kingston really. It seems to become more popular year on year.

sw19007 · 01/03/2019 11:37

We got a WHS waitlist place last year and had until the normal acceptance date to decide.
I think WL are moving today as lots of people who aren't waiting for state school offers are making their decisions today anyway. Certainly that's the case at our primary.

Sweetnhappy1 · 01/03/2019 12:06

WHS were expecting to go to waitlist this year. They only made 72 offers for 60 places which is really unusual (I think normally schools would offer double or sometimes triple). They were worried about the building work and not being able to squeeze in a bulge class. We found this out on the offers meeting.

jkhj · 01/03/2019 12:10

Hi all, we sent off our KGS papers last week. Husband called leh regarding waiting list and apparently my daughter if highly likely to get a call.

Oh what to do! Love KGS, leh is much closer only 10mins by car oppose to 40 mins to KGS. Don’t like the ‘pushy’ reputation leh has but it seems like an amazing school and local.... wish I could see it again!

jkhj · 01/03/2019 12:13

Good luck to everyone waiting for the school results today and those waiting for waiting list movement.
Hope you all get what you want!

Thesunalwaysshines · 01/03/2019 12:14

jkhj co Ed versus single sex? LEH easy for your DD to get to independently? KGS in Kingston which the girls there love!

Geogra · 01/03/2019 12:19

Jk, can LEH tell you when you’re highly likely to get a call by? That could help with decision making

Bool · 01/03/2019 12:32

@jkhj did you pay KGS deposit?

1ndig0 · 01/03/2019 12:55

jkhj - How much was the KGS deposit though - £2k or thereabouts? I doubt you would have that refunded tbh as once you accept its legally binding.
Having said that, 10 mins v 40 mins is a lot of time saved in travel. 5 hours a week!
How was she planning to get to KGS?

Toomuchpressure169 · 01/03/2019 12:56

Any of those on WHS waitlist - another friend has just had the call with an offer. Seems like WHS waitlist moving the quickest!

Anyone have any news of G&L waitlist moving yet?

sw19007 · 01/03/2019 12:57

I remember last year at the offer holders meeting, the head of KGS saying there was was a day cooling off period on their contract?

Thesunalwaysshines · 01/03/2019 13:01

KGS is a decent school (the head is great) so wouldn't surprise me you can have cooling off period. It's a fab school, but think about your own situation! Again, can your DD get to LEH by public transport? She won't want mum to drive her there for 7 years!! Grin

Geogra · 01/03/2019 13:21

I have heard this morning that Putney list is also moving but the school say they have not gone to waiting list yet.

What are people’s thoughts on calling the registers regularly? The people I know who have been offered places yesterday and today have not called the schools at all.

Bool · 01/03/2019 13:34

PHS said they wouldn’t look at their waitlist until Monday.....

Geogra · 01/03/2019 13:35

Putney must have over offered. It’s seems LEH, Surbiton and Wimbledon have been conservative with their offers.

Bool · 01/03/2019 13:36

Thing is though. WHS is now snapping up the top of their waitlist. Lots of people will accept somewhere else on Monday. So PHS must be pretty sure they won’t need to go deep into it....

Geogra · 01/03/2019 13:46

I agree Bool. LEH are also making offers this week so Putney must be confident they won’t need to go to the list. They didn’t appear to offer to the most academic girls at our school and might be looking for other qualities or have a slightly different criteria.
