As the Tiffin results day looms, a second 2019 SW London grammars and indies thread

A new thread to avoid the doomsday scenario of running out of posts as envelopes are opened on Friday, waiting lists move (or don’t) and e-mails are opened on 1 March.

OP posts:
Geogra · 01/03/2019 13:47

We have two friends who were unable to finish the exam paper (and I mean leaving several pages without answers) and were offered

littlemisslucky2 · 01/03/2019 14:13

LEH head said they were being careful not to have extra class this year so I’m not surprised it’s moving now. A lot of offer holders will be waiting for grammars so it should move more over next few days. I do think the deadline for acceptance should be middle of next week (like KGS and Hampton). It makes things too tight!!

1ndig0 · 01/03/2019 14:37

I would have thought WHS must lose more offer-holders to grammars than PHS, simply because there aren’t any girls grammars in Putney, Wandsworth, Fulham, Barnes, Sheen, etc. In the Merton Borough, isn’t there Wallingtons and also the Nonsuch School? (sorry if this is not the case, I don’t know the area too well). I think you have to live in Merton to apply to those grammars? But for PHS, people are only likely to be waiting on Tiffin, as far as state options go.

1ndig0 · 01/03/2019 14:43

Toomuch - Sorry I haven’t heard of the WL at G&L moving as yet. Four of the five girls at DD’s school who were offered have or will be taking it up; another one weighing it up against SPGS.
We went to a second tour this week (mainly for DH who hadn’t seen the school). The Bursar said they have the final offer-holders tour next Monday morning, so clearly some are taking it to the wire. I really hope it moves for you. What are your other options?

jitterbugs · 01/03/2019 14:46

No Grammars in Merton. Wimbledon girls will be waiting on Tiffin and Nonsuch&Wallington (not so much as transport difficult).
From most friends in Wimbledon schools not many girls got 2nd round Tiffin and 2nd round WHS (ie. got one or the other), seems tests look for different skills.

KeepingTheWormsQuiet · 01/03/2019 14:50

Tiffin Girls is in the borough of Kingston and Nonsuch High & Wallington Girls are in the borough of Sutton.

sw19007 · 01/03/2019 14:50

Some people are also hoping for state schools such as Lady Margaret's, Sacred Heart etc so not just the grammar schools.

ChristopherTracy · 01/03/2019 14:56

Yes the Sutton grammar intake stretches from Hounslow over to Crystal Palace down to Reigate and the other side of Croydon into Kent, just bonkers what commutes people will subject their dc to.

Girls less so than boys though because of the OOC scores needing to eb higher and because people will tolerate less batshit commutes for them.

You see a lot of St Philomena's girls at Balham changing train/tube though which tells you something.

1ndig0 · 01/03/2019 14:57

Oh those schools are in Sutton Borough, not Merton - apologies.

The OP has privacy concerns and so we've agreed to take this down.

AwayToday we are in your exact situation even down to worrying about our younger DS's options in a few years time. Good indie lined up which DH and I want to accept but DD wants to wait and see what happens with TGS.

1ndig0 we live half way between WHS and PHS and are in the designated area for Tiffin. Plenty of people South of the river apply to both WHS and PHS I think.

1ndig0 · 01/03/2019 15:20

I do know that in a year or so, Fulham Prep are opening a co-ed senior school which we be in newly refurbished premises in Parson’s Green. No idea as to intake size but at least it’s another boys option and could be one to watch maybe?

Lexi20 · 01/03/2019 15:22

Phs WL is moving!

1ndig0 · 01/03/2019 15:23

Sweet - yes I guess if you live inbetween WHS and PHS it makes total sense to apply for both. Very different exams and anything can happen.

whycantwegoonasthree · 01/03/2019 15:34

That was us Lexi20... Grin

whycantwegoonasthree · 01/03/2019 15:38

Re entrance for PHS - spoke to DDs head and he said that Putney phoned every school from every applicant and talked at great length about each applicant - really wanting to find out what they were like... I wonder of this is the heart of their entry criteria? I think a lot fo the applicants are likely to be within a margin of error in terms of academics...

Funny - I am super confident of our decision to go with KGS. But I felt a real pang of sadness when we emailed PHS to tell them no thanks. I think mostly because I am apprehensive about co-ed and am a GDST alumna – it would have been nice to continue the tradition.

But I dunno. It's an odd feeling.

It's probably just that you can only hope you've made the right decision... There's no way of knowing for sure...

And fuck - got to do this AGAIN in 2 years. UGH.

Geogra · 01/03/2019 15:44

I don’t think that sounds believable at all re calling every single head of every single applicant. They told us over 800 girls applied and I know that state school heads would not necessarily take part in this, or even know the Y6 applicants very well.

KaliforniaDreamz · 01/03/2019 15:45

KGS is way more down to earth. right choice imo!

KaliforniaDreamz · 01/03/2019 15:45

none of the girls from our state got PHS or WHS. All very bright girls...

whycantwegoonasthree · 01/03/2019 15:47

Geogra well I don't think our head is particularly special!? I said he was surprised because it's never happened before (this when I was asking about which school we should choose) but that they said they were calling the school of every applicant as part of their process.... I've no reason to disbelieve him.

sw19007 · 01/03/2019 15:50

I know quite a few state school girls who got PHS and WHS this year but not many who got both! Quite a few got one offer and WL on the other.

KaliforniaDreamz · 01/03/2019 15:51

presumably their wait list isnt that big
or maybe theyre creating a sense of drama...

let's face it, the whole thing is dull as dishwater...

KaliforniaDreamz · 01/03/2019 15:52

meh, perhaps all the people i know aren't that bright after all. including me for getting into this. LOL.

sw19007 · 01/03/2019 15:54

Not necessarily about being bright- right fit, luck on the day etc also comes into it. Surbiton seems to have thrown up the most surprises at our school this year. Girls getting WHS and PHS but not Surbiton which was unusual even last year.

KaliforniaDreamz · 01/03/2019 15:57

yeah i know i am trying to amuse myself while waiting for the council to email me with news

am surprised at that tho - getting SHS but not the others..
