Any of your DS doing the Hampton Test today? I feel more anxious than my son, I need some hand holding!

My son is there too - apparently with half of SW London & Surrey by the sounds of it!!

Bab7love · 05/01/2019 13:22

My son said the most difficult was the verbal reasoning which he couldn’t finish
And math was tricky but he thinks he did ok. The wait starts ...

I think there may have been around 800 sitting the exam today. After advanced and assured places does anyone know how many places they may be this year? I saw lots of smiling and relieved faces post exam.

Teacakesandcoffee01 · 05/01/2019 17:26

The 30ish dc with 10plus places & 20 with assured places from Hampton Prep also sat this morning. The current Sept 18 intake has 6 classes of 24ish, last year the school had more ds than expected accept by 1st March.
Some of the 10plus places dc will go to Tiffin or competing independent schools offering scholarships. It's so hard to predict!

dontjudgemummy · 05/01/2019 18:46

Teacakesandcoffee01. Out of interest, please can you explain why DC that pass the 10+ are more likely to secure a scholarship or get into Tiffins at 11+, which is obviously is more competitive as it's free? Is it because they are (more likely to be) prepped earlier or are brighter? I thought the proportion offered at 10+ relative to numbers sitting the exam is roughly the same as for 11+, so no more / less chance ? I may be wrong, however! Thanks

blinx · 05/01/2019 18:47

Thank you, good luck to you all.

blinx · 05/01/2019 18:53

I thought around 35 were offered advanced places and 360-70 sat it last year possibly, numbers up every year. My DS is in a bulge year so this is likely to continue a few more years. Our primary only stopped bulge recently for reception. I met a few parents who saw 10 plus as a run through with no prep but yes maybe they are more used to exams.

Teacakesandcoffee01 · 05/01/2019 19:27

Some turn down 10plus because Tiffin is free.

Pa10ma · 05/01/2019 19:34

Good luck to all. I have a DD this year so lurking on another thread, but so remember the Hampton malarkey with DS some years back. Not to worry if they didn’t finish the maths as they use it to identify scholars as well (no separate paper). When they call boys to interview they see them in batches with others from the same school. In the interview, they asked DS what your parents do (!); why do you want to come here; if you could plan an effective lesson, how would it go; hobbies; favourite subjects, etc. It has probably changed, but there it is fwiw! DS chose LU the end as he didn’t fancy the coach every day and preferred co-ed, but he has friends there and they all love it. Good luck!

chickydoo · 05/01/2019 19:41

DS in second form at Hampton.
Interviews were individual.
He's very Happy at the school and doing well.
We chose it over Tiffin. (Seemed cramped in comparison and class sizes bigger) and RGS Guildford.
No onsite sports fields, also felt there were more extra curricular options at Hampton.
We've been Happy so far. Good luck.

winterishereithink · 05/01/2019 21:10

DS was offered a deferred place in December. Sat it as a bit of a long shot. Around 250 took the exam and they interviewed about 70 ish if I remember what the admissions lady said correctly! This was the first year they've interviewed for 10 plus. She said they would offer 30-35 places with a few waiting list places. Very relaxed, individual interviews. Lasted about 20 minutes/
We love Hampton but if we were to get a place at 10+ at a nearer school we may take that instead and we will also sit a couple of nearer ones at 11+ so i would say that the some of the deferred offer holders will def not take up their places.

dontjudgemummy · 05/01/2019 21:37

Yes, I loved Hampton too. Is the favourite of the 3 boys schools we've seen. Will put DS in for the 11+. Fingers crossed!

blinx · 05/01/2019 22:53

That was 360 plus in 2016 sitting for 10 plus -sorry not v clear earlier.

blinx · 05/01/2019 22:54

Oops 2017 sitting of ten plus

winterishereithink · 05/01/2019 23:04

Blinx- are you sure it was that many? The admissions lady this year said it was their largest number ever and that was 250- not that it really matters- just curious!

blinx · 06/01/2019 03:28

The figure for 2017 10 plus came from another parent I had spoke to at pick up that day so not verifiable - so go with your figure. If so, the odds are looking possibly better than 11+ entry point ? I must say HS made my DS feel really welcome with the personalised postcard and it was all efficiently organised on the day. Really impressed.

Bab7love · 06/01/2019 10:15

I agree, the personalised postcard was a really nice touch. I am also impressed by their communication and organisation so far.

The 10 plus exam and interview process was also great ( as far is it can be!). They really put the boys and parents at ease and with the interviews really appreciated that most of them were only 9.
Was impressed with it!

conscience13 · 09/01/2019 12:57

Did any of your child receive call from Hampton's? Going to be third day for today from 5th
.My son is getting very nervous and anxious. I am confused

2kidsand1cat · 09/01/2019 13:20

Did anyone get a phone call inviting candidates for scholarship interviews? I might be wrong but today is the last day those calls are made ....

conscience13 · 09/01/2019 13:37

Can we call them back ? Or it looks desperate

aeganblue · 09/01/2019 13:42

We were there for the alternate date yesterday and admissions lady said 600 sat it Saturday. Yikes!

Poppyred25 · 09/01/2019 14:21

You have to do really well in the exams to get a scholarship I/v, like 99% in the maths exam. I would hold out for an interview letter later this week or early next week.

dontjudgemummy · 09/01/2019 14:48

Agreed. Really don't stress over scholarship! Worry about getting an interview. I don't mean you shouldn't worry, but you know what I mean!

dontjudgemummy · 09/01/2019 14:48

*should worry
