Thread 8

OP posts:
Theimpossiblegirl · 23/05/2018 18:12

DD said she didn't enjoy AQA Physics at all. No mention of it being easy here.

Business Studies was 'a nice paper to be fair' so it's not all bad.

goodbyestranger · 23/05/2018 18:13

You're welcome to join me in my corner northender, despite the different exam board :)

cubscout · 23/05/2018 18:14

Shock stickerrocks
Funnily enough I've just been reading another thread in AIBU form a dad who is outraged that his daughter may be disqualified from her Biology exam...she was late, had her phone and then also shouted at the invigilator. He thinks the school are not being reasonable....

mmzz · 23/05/2018 18:14

hmcAsWas What I like about these threads is that we share common problems, irrespective of target grades. I have never once thought of your DC as any different in a bad way (because she isn't!)

Speaking only for DS now, just because a DC is good at one type of thing, doesn't make them good at everything. DS did well today, but he should since he's got a maths brain.

Yesterday, was Geography and English Lit and despite doing a lot more prep for those than maths and all the sciences combined, he came home thinking that he probably fell quite a bit short of his expected grades. Ditto RE last week. And the French oral. Not everything comes easy.

Allthebestnamesareused · 23/05/2018 18:16

Noone doinh CIE igcse physics then? Grin

mmzz · 23/05/2018 18:16

stickerrocks Wow! Selfish, self-entitled behaviour, or what?! I hope she just lost her prom ticket.

TheSecondOfHerName · 23/05/2018 18:17

goodbyestranger
Trilogy is a combined science course from AQA (worth two GCSEs). I think it's called that to distinguish it from Synergy (another AQA combined science course)

I'm not an expert on the difference between them but I think it's something to do with the structure of the course and being able to separate the teaching between Physics, Chemistry and Biology teachers.

mmzz · 23/05/2018 18:18

cubscout i have been reading that thread too. I love the way he thought that not only should she not be disqualified but the the exam board should lay on another set of exams, just for her.

I'm actually glad that she isn't going to be my GP one day!

wineoclockthanks · 23/05/2018 18:18

DS said OCR Physics ways 'OK'

Anyone else doing OCR Sciences, I don't see it being mentioned on here?

goodbyestranger · 23/05/2018 18:21

Thank you Second. Confusing terminology.

mmzz I glanced at the thread and my first thought was: medicine?

mmzz · 23/05/2018 18:21

Here is a link of anyone is interested.

Hope i'm not breaking any MN rules, but if I am, they can delete this post.

bionicnemonic · 23/05/2018 18:22

My DS did ocr today. He’s not in a very good mood. Physics is his subject and although he found most okay he said there was a question about a stone falling into a well (how deep is the well) he said they’ve not been told the speed everything falls at...

hmcAsWas · 23/05/2018 18:23

Sure mmzz I totally get that, and I do really enjoy the discussions on this thread. Everyone is quite different but its always a constructive, helpful and supportive forum

mmzz · 23/05/2018 18:23

goodbyestranger its what she wants, and Daddy always makes sure she gets exactly what she wants and to hell with everyone else

Not this time, he won't.

northender · 23/05/2018 18:24

Just read back further & yes, definitely with you goodbye. Ds' school is a better than average comp I'd say & according to him, most found it v hard.

mmzz · 23/05/2018 18:25

hmcAsWas yes, (almost) always supportive. Exceptions are made for DC who behave selfishly and disrupt other people's exams.

Stickerrocks · 23/05/2018 18:28

I've had my say on the other thread already.

I fired off a complaint as soon as I got in from work. DD has the full backing of the staff. We were discussing in the car this morning the fact that a significant proportion of teenagers don't give a flying fig about their exams or the impact they have on others. Point proved.

OP posts:
hmcAsWas · 23/05/2018 18:28

Grin yes - a reasonable exception in the circumstances

Oratory1 · 23/05/2018 18:29

Goodbye - the opposite of what HMCaswas said could also be true. There were a couple of weird off the wall wordy questions which DS had no clue about (banana's being a better measure for radiation than Sieverts !) but as they were only worth a few marks and as he's aiming for 6/7 then that didn't bother him. But if your DD and friends are normally hitting 100% or close, a few off the wall questions in an otherwise easy paper could have them worried.

Oratory1 · 23/05/2018 18:31

What I'm trying to say is I think there were a lot of easy questions and a few very hard ones which would have been good for those going for average grades but not so for those going for the top %

Nettleskeins · 23/05/2018 18:33

hmc thank you so much for the Macbeth quote, I couldn't find it anywhere..

Physics seemed uneventful, both taking different boards, and dd mentioned a scuba diver question which she found troublesome, but otherwise..no frustrations with that. I think there was a question on magnetic radiation in medicine and ds2 put Xrays which I think was wrong (probably) surely an MRI?

Now THE POEMS ON FRIDAY who thinks the poem in love and relationships is going to be....Porpyhria's Lover...? I'm convinced of it. Dd was scoffing, it is much too long Mum, no-one can read that long a poem"... anyone have any other premonitions??? I'm hoping there will be a question on either that or Love's Philosophy. dd wants the Farmer's Bride.

Maths, well as long as they have compasses, I am leaving it to fate. Ds2 needs a 5, dd might get a 7 and is aiming for one. Ds2 is only doing foundation so it is "easier" but still testing in that he obviously not very mathematical.

Sostenueto · 23/05/2018 18:37

What dgd meant by saying physics was a 'gift' she meant that all that was on it were her strong points. The banana one was weird but when they got out they nearly all put the same answer more or less. Only other really tricky one was when they had to more or less make up an equation to work something out as question did not quite fit any of equations she knew.( she knew all equations because she's a mathy head) Again others said they did this also but some varying answers. This is physics triple ( not combined) sciences AQA. She did not think paper easy but manageable and plenty of time left to check answers. She is predicted a 7/8 in physics. ( got 8 in mocks) but she's not consistent in this subject fluctuating between the 2 grades. Think she will end up a 7. Not her strongest science. I don't think there u
Is a foundation triple in AQA? It wouldn't make sense to have one would it?Confused

RosieLig · 23/05/2018 18:39

Hmmmm AQA trilogy not great here. Missed out a 6 marker. Oh well. Onto Maths tomorrow Confused

Oratory1 · 23/05/2018 18:40

declined to comment on the other thread but it doesn't sit right - do you thing the OP is actually the child ?

Also surely even if she is dsq its not future ruined, she can move on to sixth form and retake that exam.

I do remember though that DD2 said they got less careful for the last few exams when the novelty/adrenelin wore off and they were running down to the exam hall at the last minute and not checking their pockets six times like they did for the first few - so please do remind your DCs to be careful after half term. DS (dyslexic brain) is so forgetful he could easily slip up and would be mortified.

RosieLig · 23/05/2018 18:40

Ps yes you can do individual sciences at foundation. Why would that not make sense @sostenueto?
