Thread 8

OP posts:
TheSecondOfHerName · 22/05/2018 22:24

Sostenueto it feels great when they can tick a whole subject off. DS2 is putting the books into a box when each subject is done, and his shelves are already looking less full.

Sostenueto · 22/05/2018 22:24

Prize giving not till October achickencalledkorma suppose those not attending same school will have to come back for prize giving.

Sostenueto · 22/05/2018 22:25

Definitely off to bed!

TheSecondOfHerName · 22/05/2018 22:25

Friday is going to be a challenge for DS2. He is not a fan of poetry. 😂

AlexanderHamilton · 22/05/2018 22:26

Wow new thread already.

Dd felt English Lit went well she liked both the questions she answered on R & J and Inspector calls.

The only issue was she thought the exam was this afternoon and it was this morning but she was at school early anyway.

Sostenueto · 22/05/2018 22:27

Agree second

BlueBelle123 · 22/05/2018 22:27

PE is finished both exams were last week!

hmcAsWas · 22/05/2018 22:28

Pretty much every ex Y11 gets a prize at prize giving at dd's school Sostenuto - its in October and the ex Y11's get invited back and generally 95% of them attend. I should point out that its a tiny school and there are generally only about 30 in each year, but yeah - they all get a prize Grin. It could be labelled tokenism, but I think its rather nice

AChickenCalledKorma · 22/05/2018 22:34

Thanks TheSecond - I didn't even know there was a Physics Olympiad, although she's take part in the Maths challenges. I will get her to take a look.

TheSecondOfHerName · 22/05/2018 22:36

If anyone has any tips for getting literal-minded autistic teenage boys to appreciate figurative language in poetry, please let me know by Thursday. He has studied neurotypical people's interpretations of the set poems, but the unseen poem is going to be tricky.

AlexanderHamilton · 22/05/2018 22:37

Prize Day at dds school is the day before prom at the end of June. It’s a whole school affair. The year 11 get presented with their records of achievement.

HesMyLobster · 22/05/2018 22:57

Crikey these threads fill up fast!
Thankyou for the new one, love the title.
Korma completely understand about your DD and Physics. Sounds very similar to how I imagine my DD feels about psychology. But would never say it out loud!

Best of Luck to your DD tomorrow, I hope the questions go her way and that she smashes it!

Second 30 Level 9 Maths in one school?! How many in the cohort? That sounds exceptionally high! Wow!

I think there were only a handful of 9s altogether at DD's school last year. That's a fairly average comp though so I guess that's the difference?

callitwhatyouwill · 22/05/2018 22:59

stickerrocks - it's Latin (Culture) on Friday, too for us. Big one tomorrow - DD's passion: Physics.

HesMyLobster · 22/05/2018 23:05

Any other DC doing Psychology tomorrow? AQA?
After spending hours over the past few weeks quizzing DD, I think might need a handholding about which practitioners come up!

KingscoteStaff · 22/05/2018 23:07

hmc DS didn’t do the Larkin poem because it was so short - he thought he’d run out of things to say!

TheSecondOfHerName · 22/05/2018 23:08

There's 190 in the year group I think?
In DS1's year, more than half of the year group got an A or an A* in Maths.
The lowest sets (the non-selective part of the intake) are taught in much smaller classes so they tend to do well too.

HesMyLobster · 22/05/2018 23:26

Crikey. Outstanding results. It sounds like an excellent school.
There were 530 pupils in DD1's year and I think about 15 of them got A* in maths!
Not sure of the number who got As but I'd guess at about 30?

There are 560 in DD2's year - it'll be interesting to see if this cohort follow a similar pattern.

TheSecondOfHerName · 22/05/2018 23:37

HesMyLobster if it's 100% non-selective then those results are good though. It's a different type of intake.

Because DSs' and DD's schools are partially selective, they have the whole range of ability, but a disproportionate amount of students are at the top end.

It has worked for DS2 (got a selective place, taught with a whole bunch of other highly able pupils), and seems to be working for DD and DS3 (non-selective places, average in their year groups at those schools but will probably get 6s and 7s).

hmcAsWas · 22/05/2018 23:58

Kingscotestaff - it probably was a shorter answer than it would have been for the Brontë poem - will just have to hope it was quality over quantity!

Cherryburn · 23/05/2018 00:16

DS did the Larkin (The Trees) too. He really likes it, and had predicted it would come up. Am also hoping for quality over quantity!

hmcAsWas · 23/05/2018 00:19

Fingers crossed Cherry

mmzz · 23/05/2018 05:44

DS1 keeps moving all his study materials to box files as and when he finishes them. He has plans to present them to DS2. Sometimes he puts personalised notes on them, such as Enjoy!!

DS2 is completely oblivious to the gift that is being assembled for him and is winning every bickering moment with DS1, with the question "Don't you need to get back to your revising?"

Yes, one of my parenting failures has been to get my sons to be nice to each other.

Cherryburn · 23/05/2018 06:44

DS kicked his Geography folder round the room when he got back yesterday! I really felt for him, he got an easy A* in the mock on no very little revision but he says there's no chance he'll get one in the real thing now. And he'd done tons of revision! He's being pretty philosophical about it though.

Anyway, onwards and upwards. Physics this afternoon which he usually does well in so fingers crossed for a good paper. Good luck all!

Sostenueto · 23/05/2018 06:48

Good luck to all today another exam bites the dust! And to all those chasing 9s go smash it!!!!!Grin you are all superstars!

Sostenueto · 23/05/2018 06:51

cherrybun my dgd thinks the same so don't worry they tend to think they haven't done as well as they ought to.Flowers
