I haven't really looked into it, but had assumed that they were either dependent or not - i.e. either only the parental/household income was taken into account (not theirs) or theirs was if they were independent.

Littleham · 11/12/2014 10:10

That is right mumslife - you can change the university on the student finance forms. We had to do that last year when dd1 got into her insurance. It was really easy to apply in the first place and change the names later. Thought the whole thing was quite efficient. Best to apply early though.

Thanks for all your good wishes. I wouldn't necessarily say it is going to go well (odds still against her), just that they are being kind to dd2 in the interview process. You hear so many nightmare stories don't you?

Took DS to Essex for interview yesterday. Nicer than I expected, and DS liked it- says he will make it his insurance if they make an offer. Though he did say he would prefer to do the computer engineering course, rather than the electronic engineering he has applied for!
Should it come to him going there, I'm not sure what is the best way of changing courses. Is there an option on UCAS, or best wait till he arrives?

seimum · 11/12/2014 13:33

DS is also teething (Wisdom teeth coming through) and is complaining of aching gums.
Does Bonjela still work on 17 yr olds?

polkadottyme · 11/12/2014 16:45

Seimum- I had 3 wisdom teeth all deciding to come out at once when I was In my twenties only ibuprofen and clove oil helped to give me a good night sleep from the pain. Your ds has my sympathy

seimum · 11/12/2014 18:16

Thanks Polka

RabbitOfNegativeEuphoria · 11/12/2014 21:09

You can get adult strength bonjela. It works. It's strong.

muffinmonster · 11/12/2014 21:14

Woohoo - offer from Strathclyde! That's five out of five now. Now DD has to decide...

Horsemad · 11/12/2014 21:29

Muffin, what a nice position to be in! Well done to your DD Smile

polkadottyme · 11/12/2014 21:57

Excellent news Muffin What a great position to be in!

DD has decided with 4/5 in. Her 5th was just a panicky choice if she didn't get better offers and is no longer a consideration for her. The very nice email from her joint first choice hasn't swayed her ultimately but the very nice offer from the other one has. She's fairly sure of Brighton as her insurance as it's fairly well thought of for her subject.

Eastwickwitch · 12/12/2014 07:05

Great news Muffin, it must be a relief.

Once the offers are in do they only choose two, a 1st choice and an insurance? Could someone explain how it works please? sorry, it's probably really obvious

seimum · 12/12/2014 09:30

Hi Eastwick - yes, once all 5 unis have replied with offers (or not), then you choose a 'firm' and an 'insurance' choice.

My DS is going to have a while to wait because one of his choices (Sheffield) invited him for interview/open day, but their December day was full, and the next is not until February. So we won't have all offers in until after that.

muffinmonster · 12/12/2014 15:05

The Strathclyde offer hasn't appeared on UCAS Track yet, but once it does, she will be given a deadline by which she has to make her firm and insurance choices (insurance is optional, but I think pretty much everyone chooses one). I don't know what the deadline will be.

Her head of sixth form said when she first submitted the UCAS form that once her offers were in he would discuss her choices with her in the light of her performance at that stage (he had February in mind). This is because some of her choices are aspirational and she wants some advice to help her make a realistic decision. Meanwhile, she is now saying that she doesn't want to go to her 'safety net' choices - she would rather take a year out and try to improve her application, probably by repeating an A level.

So it will probably be an aspirational for firm and an 'on-target' for insurance.

Then all she has to do is get the grades - simple!

mumslife, DD had a call yesterday from someone at Aston (or possibly Birmingham, which would be very odd) DD wasn't in so DH took the message and didn't ask enough questions!. We think it was a student getting in touch like you had from Southampton. Hopefully she will call again this evening.

Anyone else had contact like this from any unis?

Someone must have heard my financial bleating. DD had been offered a scholarship at CUKAS choice. Probably enough for her not to need our contribution.
Still waiting for UCAS decisions...

Horsemad · 13/12/2014 08:26

Great news! Was it one she liked circular?

AmazingDisgrace · 13/12/2014 09:44

DD now has 5/5 offers!

Excellent news Circular Smile

roisin897 · 13/12/2014 11:09

when you have 5 UCAS offers in, what are the deadlines for choosing firm and insurance?
Is it, say, 15 March for everybody?
or is it, say, 30 days from receipt of your 5th offer?

AtiaoftheJulii · 13/12/2014 13:16

There's a UCAS page which tells you the deadlines according to when your offers are made. If you have them all in good time, by the spring, it's 7th May.
