Are you ready? What's everyone got planned for Thursday? I'm going to my school to check on results, then wait for DD to call me from her school, with her news.

It's going to be an emotional day! Possibly not personally with DD, not expecting any top results, but she does already has Maths and English in the bag. She had what she needs to move forward and that's all that matters.

I have another 120 kids at my school and one or two who I care very much about. Can't wait to be there for them.

Thanks for starting the new thread. I honestly don't know who is more nervous - me or DS! He was absolutely fine until this evening, but has just admitted that he is very stressed out. I'm so proud of all the work that he's put in, but waiting for the results has been such a burden!

MaureenMLove · 20/08/2012 21:41

Does he have definite plans for next year?

Yes, he does Maureen. The plan is for staying on at his current school's sixth form but he's not sure about his final options yet. Has your DD got something set?

FrankWippery · 20/08/2012 22:02

I've got DS's results. Well some anyway. He's just finished Y10 and has taken 5 this year. Thinks he's done ok, but we shall see. DDs 1&2 got amazing results last week in A/AS levels and he's comparing himself to them. I am not, but he's still stressing.

glaurung · 20/08/2012 22:09

Not quite sure what to expect to be honest, it's been a funny old year for dd, so anything from brilliant to disastrous is on the cards, but they really ought to be good enough for sixth form entry, so fingers crossed!

All further complicated by the fact she's away this week, so should receive results by e-mail (& hopefully then phone us), but I think she's left her phone charger at home, so it's questionable both whether she'll get them at all and whether she'll let us know if she has/hasn't/what they are.

MaureenMLove · 20/08/2012 22:36

Well, she believe she has got a conditional place at 6th form. It's unlikely that her results will stop it from being confirmed. She needed at least C in Maths & English (which she achieved in March) and at least a C in Art. Her predicted grade is A*, so unless she's really screwed things up, she should be OK! Grin

She plans to do Fine Art, Photography, Physcology and Sports Science. Should be OK!

At least I know she won't have to resit Maths or English, so that's the main thing, I suppose.

It would be nice if she got better than a C in Geography or Science, but tbh, she doesn't need then to move forward, so it won't be the end of the world.

Getting very tense here, too! DD should have done reasonably well, and there isn't much doubt about her being able to continue in her school's (more or less open) sixth form. She wants to have very good results though, and it is definitely possible that she has got them - it's the uncertainty!

cardibach · 20/08/2012 23:11

Also, if they try to bloody well say they have got easioer blah blah blah after all the work that was put in here I may have to personally track down some politicians and kick them up the bum!

BringBack1996 · 20/08/2012 23:14

I'm especially worried for DS now that the A level results have come out with a significant drop in A/A* grades. I wonder if the harsher marking used there will be used to mark the GCSEs?

glaurung · 20/08/2012 23:19

Did you look at the actual figures for the A levels bringback? The percentage change from last year was tiny. The notable change was that it had gone down not up (unlike every year for the last 20 years), but the amount it went down was so small it didn't even get it to the year before's level, so nothing to worry about imo.

glaurung · 20/08/2012 23:21

So if the GCSE results follow the same pattern we'll be looking at the second highest results ever, rather than the highest.

BringBack1996 · 20/08/2012 23:21

That's a relief! I haven't seen the figures, no, just the headlines.

glaurung · 20/08/2012 23:27

Ahh, the way the press go on about it you can be forgiven for thinking the world is about to end. I think they couldn't run their usual 'exams are getting easier' stories, so had to sensationalise something else.

glaurung · 20/08/2012 23:33

26.6% A* and A grades this year, 27% last year.

So in every 1000 results just 4 less getting A* or A.

UmmOfUmbridge · 20/08/2012 23:34

My DS will be getting his results on Thursday.

I'm very nervous about his Maths as he's been borderline C/D in his modules whereas he's been getting definite C's and above in other subjects. He's already got his B in English (thank God).
Worst case scenario he has to resist maths next year in sixth form I guess. He's hoping to study A levels in English, Biology, History and IT (the IT is actually a btec or something equivalent but it's his best subject along with history).
He doesn't seem particularly nervous... But hes your typical shruggy teenage boy :)

cinnamonnut · 21/08/2012 12:05

Good luck everyone Grin

trish391971 · 21/08/2012 12:23

I'm feeling very nervous as is DS, this is the first time I have experienced this apart from the 11+. My son can be hit and miss so could do well in some and not so good in others. He needs to get an average score of 46.5 points to get back into his sixth form:) Good luck to everyone - I will be relieved when thursday comes and will be proud of my DS whatever happens.

Yellowtip · 21/08/2012 13:03

DS3 due his results too. Absolutely no idea what to expect, but I think different from his older siblings. His predictions were very different at least. I feel protective of this DS. He didn't work much in Y7, 8 and 9 but he did put in real effort this year, so I hope for his sake that pulls him up.

TaggieCampbellBlack · 21/08/2012 13:07

Hello
Dd needs good grades to do IB next so fingers crossed. She worked hard so should be ok but her choices will depend of what grades.

cardibach · 21/08/2012 13:58

I think (as a teacher as well as a parent) that very restirictive 6th form entry requirements are an absolute scandal. A friend'd daughter has to get 5 A/A* and nothing below a B. TOo much pressure, and GCSE results aren't that good an indicator of A level performance in my experience. THey are a whole different kettle of fish.
Hoping everyone gets what they want/need.

trish391971 · 21/08/2012 14:16

I know the min my son needs to get is 3 a's, 5 b's and the rest c's, he is feeling so worried that he may not get back into the school he loves - TBH so am I and I was so confident that I never applied for any other Sixth Form's! I hope I can get him in as a late application to a good one if his current school don't accept him. I am hoping all this worring is for nothing but who knows? I am crossing my whole body until Thursday :)

prettydaisies · 21/08/2012 15:22

I think my daughter needs 6 bs to go to her school's sixth form. That shouldn't be a problem, I hope! We are on holiday so results being emailed, but will need to find an Internet cafe or something, because she can't get her school email on her phone. Her igcse results are probably sitting on the mat at home as they came out last week. She knows from facebook that her friends have done well, so I hope she has too.

GnomeDePlume · 21/08/2012 17:31

DD1 has to get 7 GCSEs for her chosen 6th form including min B (though pref A) in the 4 subjects she is taking to AS.

She has worked hard so I really hopes she gets this. It is a chance to break away from a very poor school as she is aiming for a high achieving 6th form over the county border.

Fingers, toes and eyes are crossed for everyone to get no less than they deserve!
