Are you ready? What's everyone got planned for Thursday? I'm going to my school to check on results, then wait for DD to call me from her school, with her news.

It's going to be an emotional day! Possibly not personally with DD, not expecting any top results, but she does already has Maths and English in the bag. She had what she needs to move forward and that's all that matters.

I have another 120 kids at my school and one or two who I care very much about. Can't wait to be there for them.

clam - I'm also looking for CIE IGCSE grade boundaries. The thing with grade boundaries is they change according to the deemed difficulty of the set paper, which seems entirely reasonable to me that different exams will move.

I only know about my son's IGCSE results as they came out before today. He got A maths, A English Language and A in Eng Lit, but I think the ENglsh Lit is perilously close to an A* (89) but not sure as I can't find the grade boundaries.

DS has only just returned from his camping trip, so couldn't go into school today. We are waiting for the letter tomorrow.

LittleFrieda · 23/08/2012 23:41

DisplayStortford, Sorry about your son, his school sounds a bit brutal. I hope you find a successful solution.

MaureenMLove · 23/08/2012 23:44

Hope everyone has recovered from the day and results have started to sink in.

DD is finally home, with a screwed up results envelope! In her rush to tell me this morning on the phone, she didn't give me half the information I needed. She hasn't done too badly at all.

Disappointed that she was way off the C for Geography and I've told her so, but even more disappointed that she was 2 marks off a C for French. She stuggled so much with it and until very recently, she was aiming for G! Grin

Hey ho, she will not be persuing either subject at A level, so although they are both D, they are still GCSEs!

I talked to the Deputy head of Sixth form yesterday, DS can still do his subject choices, and we discussed the procedures for resisting English. He also thinks there might be grounds for a remark in Geography as apparently it was very close to a C (from a D).

DS's school works in partnership with other local schools and the local FE college, so much that the results came on "partnership" headed paper not school specific. However the school is also trialling a foundation year in Sixth Form for those not ready for full Sixth form yet, where you may do one A'Level along with vocational and GCSEs.

Of course in my day in my Sixth Form those of us studying just A'levels were in a minority, most people were resisting O'levels or even taking new ones or other more vocational courses. But DS's school is far more Academically focused than mine was.

BeingFluffy · 24/08/2012 08:03

DD felt a bit more positive as of yesterday evening after we had been out. Realised she was 2 ums away from A in 2 subjects and also 2ums away from the A in history. I still can't believe the school didn't tell her/us that she failed the history controlled assessment. Nothing I can do about it now, but think I will mention it to the school. Going for remarks in those 3 and possibly one other subject where she was carrying forward A, though her mark was 10ums off.

Anyway she had a rare moment of insight yesterday when she said she realised she was human after all. I think the penny is finally dropping that being clever and doing the minimum is not enough. She is worried that the results will impact on her uni applications but hopefully it won't.

Fannychanel · 24/08/2012 08:14

Hi Bringback yes you do have a audition which ds had before GCSE results went very well but the course has aske for 4 GCSEs as well. He was accepted at interview will know Tuesday a long weekend a head

GetDownNesbitt · 24/08/2012 08:14

fluffy how do you mean 'failed' the CA? It could well be that the school thought her mark was OK - ie that mark in January would have been worth a B but boundary changes mean that in June it is only worth a C or a D.

BeingFluffy · 24/08/2012 09:48

Thanks Nesbitt. She got As for the written papers sat in June and a D for the CA which I think was in March. The school must have been aware that it was below standard and DD was unhappy at the time but the teacher said they would know if there was a problem. I don't think a B can be downgraded to a D. There was no opportunity to resit.

clam · 24/08/2012 13:20

I was up 'til gone 1am with ds, going through his results sheet, as he came home from his party having decided his results weren't good enough! He's identified a query in his drama, whereby his practical mark translated back to 90%. However, he was told that he'd got 93% and that it wasn't going to be validated. 93% would have meant he was 1 mark off an A* which he thinks warrants a re-mark (of the written paper).
I've said we'll have a chat with the school if he wants, but really I can't help thinking he should just leave it be and celebrate his achievements so far. He's gone to bed to "think about it."

Ormiriathomimus · 24/08/2012 14:07

Hurray! DS1 got his results sent to the house this morning. C in Maths (as good as it was likely to get hence LT), C in English (so far) and B (Yes a B!!!) in Physics. So pleased. I know it doesn't sound like much amongst so many amazing results on here but I am so proud of him. School really isn't his strong point....

LineRunner · 24/08/2012 14:25

I cried over DD's C in Maths, in a good way. Don't knock it. Grin

magentadreamer · 24/08/2012 14:35

Orm, well done to your DS. if my DD ever gets an overall C grade in English Language I will probably cry with joy, heres hoping that this time next year I can tell the world that Magentadreamer jr has a very proud mummy. If not there is always yr12 and 13......

cardibach · 24/08/2012 16:55

Well, DD is looking a little smudgy around the eyes after a beach party last night - she and her friends finally walked home (only a 10 min walk, don;t judge me!) at 2am. SHe then had to get up to go to school to sign up for A level courses.

WHen we went, she only knew she wanted to do English and Biology, although with 10 subjects at B and above ( :) I don't think I'll tire of saying that for a while) she had lots of choices. She discussed her results and career ideas (she is interested in Speech Therapy or similar) with the Head and Head of Sixth and has signed up for Psychology and Health and Social Care as well. SHe seems very happy, and I think it's a good decision.
We can now enjoy the last week of the holidays!

StepAwayFromTheEcclesCakes · 24/08/2012 18:12

proud mum here 5 A's and an A* Grin just hope he can keep it up in sixth form for A levels.

duchesse · 27/08/2012 00:26

Four module results in for DD2- all three sciences and a history module. 3 As and an A*, so on course. Hoping for more of same next year.

BeingFluffy · 27/08/2012 11:17

Duchesse a word of warning - DD was carrying forward A in all 3 sciences from the modules she did in January and A for the controlled assessment but only got 1 science A and got As in the other 2. She thought she was guaranteed A in all 3 - you cannot predict what will happen in the other modules - especially if grade boundaries are suddenly slashed and the kids have to work hard til the end.

Kez100 · 27/08/2012 11:25

The modules get progressively harder too (although to some extent that depends on individual ability) - so continued hard work is absolutely necessary. These modular courses are no walk in the park.

duchesse · 27/08/2012 11:54

I know, I'm not desperately enamoured of modular GCSEs either- the older two did end exam only and I think they're far preferable.

Theas18 · 27/08/2012 14:14

Well done to all the mumsnet kids- the marking fiasco has been awful hasn't it.

Very proud here, DS got 7A* and 3A !!

He's not 100% happy as , like many his results breakdown, he was 1 UMS of the coveted in English, he "should" based on assessments etc have got that in history too. French was an unexpected bonus though.

He's looking to apply for a course at uni where the number of stars matters. Hopefully his peer group will have been equally " affected" so in 18 months time when he applies the universities will be aware and have a similar profile from all applicants.

He's so self driven he wanted to go for a re mark but I think that wouldn't be wise given regression to the mean etc and he might end up with a lower final mark.

BeingFluffy · 27/08/2012 15:20

At DD's school we know of some students who got a full set of As but also quite a few like her who only got 3 or 4. It is a superselective, so she is likely to be at a disadvantage in Uni applications if she goes for a top uni. Depending on what the teachers say, she is going to go for remarks in the 2 where she is within 2 ums of the A and possibly in history where she is 2 ums off the A - she says getting a B is like a fail in her school, where some girls can be incredibly bitchy.

LineRunner · 27/08/2012 16:21

My DD is in a local state school and the results were bloody awful this year. She did extremely well relative to many of the other girls, but nevertheless I don't see how she will ever have been anything but disadvantaged by factors outside her control.

BringBack1996 · 27/08/2012 21:40

I don't think she will be, Fluffy. DS is at a non-selective indie and there were only 2 or three who got the full set of A*s. In reality most will have a range of results, based on where their strengths lie.

BrigitBigKnickers · 27/08/2012 23:15

Extremely proud of DD.Got Ds and Es in her mocks- scraped these up to Cs and the odd B by March and ended up with 8 A grades a B and a C.Perhaps she will now believe in herself a bit more ! Just goes to prove what hard work can achieve ! We are actually appealing the C as her teacher told her she had an A in her CA and the B and C she got in her exams don't quite add up . Sooooo proud!

IDontKnowWhereMyMedalsAre · 29/08/2012 20:07

Ds got 1A, 5A's and 5 B's. His course work and controlled assessments for both Englishs and History were all 100%. He has worked so hard. We are really proud of him. However he is 1 ums off A for both Eng and 1 ums off an A for history. We are waiting for school to return to see what they say about remarking. He is still abroad so we havent really spoken in great detail about what he wants to do regarding remarks. I really dont mind DH and I are so proud the boy who was barely able to read and write in year 7 and was only given projected targets of 5 grade C's because the school NEVER project lower than a C Hmm. congrats to everyones DC.
