Hi all

I have decided to restart this thread good luck for friday!!!!

OP posts:
Marni23 · 28/09/2012 10:08

I have resurrected this old thread in the hope that someone who went through the process earlier this year may be able to help.

My DS will be sitting for Trinity in January. Does anyone know who sets their VR exam? Is it GL Assessment (NFER as was)? I only ask so we can concentrate on the relevant question types (eg some of those used in Bond aren't relevant for GL assessment papers).

I followed this thread (and its predecessor) last year-I hope all your DC are happy and settling in Y7 at their various schools.

Lfs2126 · 28/09/2012 10:35

Hi. They set their own I think and are q tough compared to the other 2 exams.

Marni23 · 28/09/2012 10:56

Hi thanks for the reply. I asked if they set their own a couple of months ago and they said not-although they were thinking of doing so.

SoupDragon · 28/09/2012 11:03

Both DSs just did Bond practice papers. Neither complained about never having seen anything before and both got in easily.

SoupDragon · 28/09/2012 11:05

Ask them at the open day next Saturday. Although I'm not sure whether they'd tell you.

Marni23 · 28/09/2012 11:23

Thanks Soupdragon that's helpful. I'll ask the question next Saturday but as you say, maybe they won't tell me. Some schools are quite open about who sets their reasoning papers, others not. I suspect that experienced local tutors for such schools will know, having worked it out from feedback from their pupils. I think it would be fairer if schools were open with the information which would level the playing field for those of us who won't/can't pay an external tutor.

SoupDragon · 28/09/2012 11:35

If you're lucky, LadyMuck's red alert klaxon will go off - I swear she has spy cameras in all the local schools :)

Marni23 · 28/09/2012 11:41

Ooooh yes, fingers crossed!

Ladymuck · 28/09/2012 11:47

I think that they use the ISEB. Certainly their past papers are of a similar format, and they do ask boys to sit CE papers at 13 for setting purposes.

SoupDragon · 28/09/2012 12:07

See - Klaxon! :o

Ladymuck · 28/09/2012 12:40

lol! Actually just reread the question and see that you are talking about VR specifically. That one I'm less certain of, but certainly with all 3 Whitgift Foundation schools I have never come across any suggestion of a narrower range of questions so I would err on the side of caution. I know ISEB are now doing a computer VR test at 11 and they're hoping to be able to tie in predicted GCSE grades on the back of it! Some of the other independent schools are already using computerised VR tests, but with the numbers applying for W & T I suspect that they'll have to stay with hard copy for now.

Marni23 · 28/09/2012 12:54

Great, thanks for that. Looks like we'd better get started on Bond etc then!

Ladymuck · 28/09/2012 16:25

I think that the "Learning together" series is meant to be recommended for the independent schools. Bond is obviously fine. Anyone else involved in the Wally Boys saga this year? The rumour mill is indicating that one tutor already had the paper....!

SoupDragon · 28/09/2012 16:40

Shock I wonder if it's true? We didn't bother with Wally boys last year.

And thankfully DD is only Y2 so I have a while before I have to go through this nightmare again!

florenceuk · 28/09/2012 17:12

please pm me someone - DS sat Wallington Boys and found it hard (wilsons easier apparently).

teaandthorazine · 28/09/2012 17:31

Good to see this thread has been resurrected!

Ds will be sitting the 10+ for W (haven't decided about T yet) in Jan 2013, but more for practice than anything else tbh... two bites of the cherry and all that...

Am v much in two minds about whether to sit him for T as well. W is v much the preferred option (know the school well, love it, travel much easier etc) but part of me thinks it would be silly not to have a shot at T as well. Plus the fact that he won't be going to either without a substantial bursary, do I really want to put him through it twice?

SoupDragon · 28/09/2012 17:40

Personally, I would sit him for both, tea. Mainly for the whole "eggs in one basket" thing - if it came down to it, your DS may be the kind of boy one is looking for and not the other. It depends what your other options are.

W was my preferred choice until I looked round both and went through the whole process with DS1. Transport to W is far easier from where we are too.

I changed my mind and am completely happy that I have made the right decision for both my DSs (they had offers from both W & T)

Fishsauce · 29/09/2012 11:31

Sorry to be so thick but what is ISEB VR? Did a quick Amazon search and came up with zilch. Never mind, hope DS (going for both T and W in Jan) has inherited cleverer genes...!

SoupDragon · 29/09/2012 11:32

Independent Schools Examination Board verbal reasoning

:)

Fishsauce · 29/09/2012 11:33

Ooh, and DS did Wally boys too. LadyM do tell more about the saga!

Fishsauce · 29/09/2012 11:34

Soupy you are a fountain of knowledge, thank you.

SoupDragon · 29/09/2012 11:51

Nope - just googled :o

surelyshirley · 20/06/2013 18:26

Hi all.
My DS is in Yr 4 of a school which does not prep as it has a senior school. We would be happy if he wanted to stay on there but equally want to give him every possible chance so my question is, does anyone know of a tutor who will assess him for T & W rather than coach. I would like to see if he would be capable as hes doing well where he is but would like to test his standards against other schools. Thanks in advance.
