Ahhh... Can't believe it Stressy. Weren't you going for a sports scholarship as well? So sad for your family. Hope you've got a good state option. Are you going to try again at 13+?

Gunznroses · 18/02/2012 21:19

Congratulations to all the proud mummy's who got a place,

Selina · 19/02/2012 19:18

Hi all.
@ frankie, keeping it ... Gutted to hear ur news . But also inspired to hear you plotting for the next try.
My DD (14) had tutoring 2x a week , had a good prep school and got into a GDST school. She got in with the wrong crowd and while their marks did not suffer, hers plummeted. The school kept telling me she's still above national average - however her self esteem plummeted and she started to self harm in several different ways.I have moved her to a coed state boarding school that has no academic hurdles- she is so much happier.and her marks are the best they have ever been.
I feel I made the cardinal mistake of tutoring and hence did not do this with DS- hedid not get into any grammars or KCS- but I am confident the right school has found him and he will be at his own comfortable level.
I suppose what I'm trying to say, is whatever school they get into -they need to be at a comfort level they can maintain without extra tutoring and not struggle- so in the end - the school and boy shoud be a good match .
Sometimes a year to mature academically or in confidence makes all the difference.
FYI - state boarding school same price As GDST school.....

stresscity · 19/02/2012 19:51

Selina-your words have been a real comfort and very very wise!!
Asterisk-thank you so much-we need to get over it and move on! We do have out second option which is Ewell Castle and he did recieve a Sports Scholarship so at least he has that. And as selina said, deep down, EC is probably better suited to our DS if we are being honest. Its better tp be at the top than struggling which is possibly what could have happend at T ( thats what i keep telling myself anyway lol)

kravings · 19/02/2012 21:41

@stresscity - I am so sorry to hear your news. I truly hope something good works out for you and your DS.

stresscity · 20/02/2012 10:23

Thanks kravings Really appreciate it. I do hope that whatever you choose works out for your DS too- Well done him!

Asterisk · 20/02/2012 10:32

Soup, have you phoned T yet to negotiate about scholarship? It sounds like scholarships are very thin on the ground this year. Heard of high-flying boy from Caterham Prep thought to be a shoo-in for C scholarship, but nothing doing. I wonder if the schools are allocating more to bursaries this year, or just tightening the purse strings?

Ladymuck · 20/02/2012 12:17

There certainly seems to be a noticeable paucity of academic scholarships from T and C.

SoupDragon · 20/02/2012 12:22

Not yet, Asterisk. I want to talk to my friend (who is staff) to see who to contact and how to proceed.

SoupDragon · 20/02/2012 12:24

It's a tricky position to negotiate from as the Whitgift scholarship puts both schools on the same footing financially speaking.

LIZS · 20/02/2012 15:43

Interesting Asterisk and LM. At least one school apparently doesn't reoffer those declined.

Ladymuck · 20/02/2012 17:22

Caterham certainly doesn't, and we know of one sports scholarship being declined. Also very few boys getting more than one scholarship offer across their schools which for the exceptional boys is again v unusual. Still stunned at the number of bright boys without an offer. Can only wonder whether scholarships have been offered mainly to those from the state sector, as the prep schools seem to have fewer than normal. And if so will there be lots of movement post 1st March? LIZS how did other children from your school fare? And any hint as to which offer your accepting?

Ladymuck · 20/02/2012 17:29

Just to clarify - the preps seem to have a similar number of sport, art and music scholarships as in previous years, but no academic ones.

Ladymuck · 20/02/2012 17:30

Eeek, you're not your!

LIZS · 20/02/2012 17:39

Know of one Academic/Allround and one Art, not sure if other was offered a place yet. No decision here yet !

SoupDragon · 20/02/2012 19:12

"Can only wonder whether scholarships have been offered mainly to those from the state sector"

DS2 appears to have the only one out of the 6 or so boys from his school.

Seeline · 21/02/2012 10:39

DS from state sector but we haven't been offered one from either W or T. Didn't apply for anything specific. I don't know if it's different for 10+ or how well he would have needed to do to be offered one. It would have been nice though Grin
Anyone made any decisions yet? I suspect most are waiting for March 1st before final decisions, but any 10+ decided yet? we are still dithering Grin Suddenly 10 seems awfully young to be going to secondary school Confused

Ladymuck · 21/02/2012 19:03

Well Whitgift Foundation say 43% of pupils on fee remission, so where are they all this year? Old Palace?

SoupDragon · 21/02/2012 19:04

I think there are probably the same number (43%) but the awards are smaller. That 43% will include bursaries too, obviously.

bananadrama · 21/02/2012 20:27

2 boys from my DS's state school got offered places at T. No bursaries or scholarships either.

kravings · 21/02/2012 21:29

same here, all offers in bag, no bursary or scholarships Sad. Still no decision made.
