Hows everyone's kids getting on with their exams / studying?

DDs first Higher exam is D&M I think. She's been busy working on past papers but feels fairly confident. She is least confident about Chemistry.

Those Prose Questions are horrendous - I would struggle to answer any of them in relation to a dystopian novel like The Handmaids Tale - curious to see my child’s reaction when they get home. (That’s if I’ve seen the right questions on Twitter?)

Kazeragi · 09/05/2024 13:47

@KingCatMeowInSpace I took it to be just a random kid's account? I just searched higher english, I'm not v good on twitter!

theferry · 09/05/2024 14:01

DD said the RUAE was OK. She’s not sure about that he other one.

Misthios · 09/05/2024 14:04

It also makes me laugh that one of the SQA set texts is the Cone Gatherers, which I did for H English in 1989. Also two of the poems (Burns, can't remember the other one) were not in English but in "scots", strikes me that one one hand the SNP are trying to position Scots as a whole different and separate language, just like Gaelic or French, yet lumping in the Scots texts with the English exams. Surely if it's that different, it should be a whole other exam?

tastydiner · 09/05/2024 14:58

DS is out of out of his practical cookery exam saying it only took 3/4 of an hour and everyone who sat it was the same. I don’t know if that fills me with fear or if it genuinely was an ok paper.

Sausagesonlegs · 09/05/2024 15:11

DD has said that her higher English 10 marker on Men Should Weep was a horror. It was based on the most irrelevant character in the entire play (Granny) apparently.

Rainbowshit · 09/05/2024 15:16

DS doesn't think he's done well at higher English. It's the one we have been most worried about.

We'll have to wait and see I guess.

weebarra · 09/05/2024 15:17

@Sausagesonlegs - that's exactly what DS1 said.

DS2 had this too, after Higher English, not a great day. He was out in less than 30 mins along with everyone else.

Glasgowgin · 09/05/2024 15:28

Mine seems pretty positive - hard paper to compare though when it will be different for every set text.

Glasgowgin · 09/05/2024 15:29

Also a lot of the happiness may be never needing to go to English again!

Kazeragi · 09/05/2024 15:38

@Sausagesonlegs mine was doing Men Should Weep too, and couldn't finish the ten marker. Feel so bad...it would have been fine if it had been a different character

motheronthedancefloor · 09/05/2024 15:41

DD is in a mood, not a good sign, she hasn't said much but said the essay for the Great Gatsby was hard. Think this was paper 2. Did anyone else do Gatsby and how did they find the essay?

Igneococcus · 09/05/2024 15:44

Mine is also pretty happy with this exam but he was expected to do well in English.

DownWithThisKindOfThing · 09/05/2024 16:06

Hope English was OK. Good to get it out of the way at least. My eldest last year said it was SHIT but he ended up with a good mark.

Practical cookery was fine apparently so that’s my youngest halfway through. Roll on 2 weeks today and then all being done.

Apps and AH maths next in this house

Daughter was out of PC in half an hour also along with the rest of the class. It was her last exam today, such a lot of pressure having them all in the first two weeks but the feeling tonight is great. She struggles so it's been hard work trying to help her best I can, really just hoping for a pass in some to boost her confidence in herself which is seriously lacking.
I was sitting having a coffee in a cafe near the school and some S5's were discussing Higher English as being a toughy.

actually got a fine from mine!

Edited

Similar. DS said it "went fine".

Higher English for Dd this morning.
She said the Jeklle and Hyde question was a ‘curve ball’
So don’t think it went great for her 🥺

Spoke to her when I got home from work. Everyone was baffled and saying ‘what the hell was that’
She showed me the list of past papers questions on the novel that her teacher had given them to aid revision and none of them where like the question posed. So no one was prepared for it.

Misthios · 09/05/2024 17:21

I think this is one of the main issues with English in that the texts will depend on the school, or even the teacher. So if one class is doing Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde and the question is a weird one, they will think the paper is a nightmare compared with their friend in the next door class who did Carol Ann Duffy poetry and got a question much more in line with what they were expecting.

Does seem to be a luck of the draw thing. The second part of the paper is much more open in that the questions don't refer to any specific text.
